Anthony LaPonzina (Colombo)

Dec. 1972
Anthony 'Tony Lap' LaPonzina was a member of the Colombo Family active primarily in gambling and loansharking in Brooklyn.

Older brothers Ralph (1910-1973) and Ernest aka Ernie Lap (1917-2004) were also made members.

Initially a member of the Sorrentino - Fusco crew, around early 1973 he and his brothers were placed under Captain Charles 'Charlie Moose' Panarella.

Born Antonio LaPonzina on February 6, 1918 in Brooklyn to Alessandro (47y) and Vincenzina Ciccone (35y). Father from Messina, Sicily. Mother possibly from Sessa Aurunca comune of Caserta, Campania.

The LaPonzinas were then residing at 6511 11th Ave in Brooklyn's Dyker Heights neighborhood. Alessandro worked as a presser.

By May 1925 the family had moved a couple of blocks over to 953 68th St.

That month father Alessandro filed Petition for Naturalization in US District Court Brooklyn. Witnesses were Carmelo Passaretti, of 12th Ave in Bensonhurst, and Frank Piccolo (46y) of Bergen St in the Crown Heights section. Naturalized that August. (Piccolo, a tailor, was from Mariglianella comune of Naples, Campania.)

By October 1940 listed employment with brother (?) Fred LaPonzina at 1359 44th St in the Borough Park section.

On January 9, 1943 married Evelyn Olsen (24y) in Brooklyn. Witnesses were John Sciolola (sp) and Alice Delmeo.

By April 1950 the couple and their daughter were residing at 969 68th St in Dyker Heights.

Both Anthony and his brother Ernest worked as taxi drivers.

By the mid-1950s they and their brothers Ralph, Fidele aka Freddie and Joseph were all involved in borough gambling operations.

On December 25, 1954 Anthony acted as driver in the armed robbery of a married couple in Neponset, Queens. Victims accosted in driveway of their residence and robbed of $100 and three rings worth approximately $7,000. Anthony apprehended after a 'mile-long, bullet-spattered' car chase culminating in his passengers exiting the car and fleeing on foot.

On February 19, 1955 Anthony and his brothers Freddie and Joseph were among 29 arrested by NYPD Brooklyn on gambling charges.

On March 2, 1955 brother Ralph LaPonzina held as material witness in Brooklyn District Attorney's Office inquiry. Ralph, described by the DA's Racket Squads Chief as 'one of five brothers close to, if not the heads' of large-scale 'bookie syndicate', was held on $5,000 bail. Press noted his brothers Anthony, Freddie and Joseph LaPonzina had been picked up the previous week.

c. Late 1950s
Per later information from a member source, Anthony was inducted into the Colombo Family in 1956.

At that time the Family Boss was Joseph Profaci, who succeeded Salvatore DiBella around 1931. Joseph Magliocco and Joseph 'Peppino' Buffa served as Underboss and Consigliere respectively.

On July 18, 1957 arrested along with brother Joseph and four others on gambling charges.

By 1958 his brothers Ralph and Ernest had also been made and all three were believed to be reporting to Captain Nicolino 'Nick' Sorrentino. (It's not clear if Sorrentino was already a Captain.)

Born 1896 in Palermo, Nick Sorrentino headed a Brooklyn crew involved primarily in gambling and loansharking.

Made members of Sorrentino's crew included Frank 'Dickie' Fusco and the LaPonzina brothers.

1961 Arrest
L to R: J. Yacovelli, C. Persico, A. Gallo, A. LaPonzina
On January 3, 1961 among nineteen arrested by NYPD's Criminal Investigation Squad in Manhattan on consorting and gambling conspiracy charges. Majority of defendants apprehended at White Turkey Restaurant located at 300 E 57th St in Midtown.

Defendants included:

Nicholas 'Jiggs' Forlano (Colombo Soldier)
Anthony LaPonzina (Colombo Soldier)
Carmine 'Junior' Persico (Colombo Soldier)
Joseph 'Joe Yak' Yacovelli (Colombo Soldier)

Albert 'Blast' Gallo (Colombo Associate)
Philip 'Fat Foongie' Gambino (Colombo Associate) [Prob. On Record with Yacovelli]
Charles 'Ruby' Stein (Colombo Associate) [On Record with Forlano]
Milton Wekar (Genovese Associate)

Case subsequently dismissed by Grand Jury.

(Ten years later Philip Gambino participated in the murder of Albert Gallo's brother Joseph. Four years after that Gambino was part of the first group made into the Colombo Family after the books opened. Albert Gallo transferred to the Genovese and was inducted into that Family in 1977. The same year Charles Stein was murdered by the West Side Irish Mob / Westies.)

In February 1961 FBI CI reported: "[Joseph] Profaci sent Tony (LNU) [LaPonzina] and Bob (LNU) [Barbieri] to see [Redacted] to settle the dispute between Bob and Tony and [Redacted]. According to informant, Bob and Tony were to obtain a union charter for bowling alley employees through [Redacted]." (Robert 'Bob' Barbieri [1915-2002] was an obscure Colombo member involved primarily in union activity and related business. He was possibly reporting at the time to Captain Simone 'Sam' Andolino.)

In May 1961 FBI CI reported: "[The] Bob and Tony mentioned [2/61] were Anthony LaPonzina [and] Bob Barbieri of Roberts Food Corporation. Informant advised a charter was obtained for the Bowling Alley Employees Union, Local 3108, through the International Brothers of Carpenters and Joiners."

On May 8, 1961 FBI CI reported: "[One] of the men behind the scenes in Local 3108 of the Bowling Alley Employees Union is Robert Barbieri, a close associate of Joseph Profaci. Informant also advised Anthony 'Tony' LaPonzina was closely associated with Joseph Profaci and acted for him in the direction and control of Local 3108."

On June 15, 1961 Barbieri interviewed by FBI at his food business in Borough Park, Brooklyn: "Barbieri was questioned concerning visits made to Joseph Profaci's residence in the company of Anthony LaPonzina. Barbieri stated he could not recall ever having driven to the home of Joseph Profaci with LaPonzina. He stated he was in doubt as to whether or not he ever drove with LaPonzina to the home of Joseph Profaci. He also stated he was in doubt as to whether or not LaPonzina ever accompanied him into the home of Joseph Profaci. However, [Redacted] Barbieri, who was present during the interview of his brother, Robert, interrupted at this point and refreshed Robert Barbieri's memory by stating one night during the end of [April], he recalls he and Robert Barbieri drove to the home of Joseph Profaci and following their visit had intended to drive to Hempstead, Long Island, to visit another friend. In this connection [Redacted] stated when they arrived at Joseph Profaci's home, Joseph Profaci's younger son drove up beside them and conversed with them prior to entering the house. Robert Barbieri also was in doubt as to whether or not he ever drove LaPonzina from the home of Joseph Profaci to the corner of LaPonzina's street, 68th Street and Fort Hamilton Parkway, Brooklyn, on the night in question."

On December 28, 1961 LaPonzina met with Colombo Soldier Salvatore S. Profaci at Sunshine Shortening and Edible Oils Company on 65th St in Bensonhurst. An FBI bug at the location recorded the discussion. Summary report noted: "[In a conversation] regarding the Profaci - Gallo war, LaPonzina stated he has an individual identified only as [Redacted] (ph) doing a lot of work for the Profacis on the Gallo situation." (The Gallo conflict began in late February 1961, when members of the rebel faction kidnapped several high-ranking Colombo members.)

By 1962 operated car wash on 7th Ave in Brooklyn.

On July 5, 1962 FBI CI and Colombo Soldier Gregory Scarpa reported: "[Scarpa] advised that [Redacted] whom informant has previously identified [redacted] in the Profaci Family, derives almost all of his income from [redacted]. Informant identified the following individuals as working [redacted] in his bookmaking operation: Tony LaPonzina; Ernie LaPonzina; [Two Redacted Names]; Dick Fusco; [Redacted], whom informant knows only as [Redacted]. Informant stated all of the above, with the exception of [Redacted] are good fellows...Informant stated [Redacted] banks his own operation and will take action on almost anything, including horses, sporting events, etc. Informant stated he did not know the location of the bank, but felt a surveillance of any of the above-named individuals would result in locating the bank."

On July 13, 1962 FBI CI reported: "[Anthony] LaPonzina, who operates a car wash in a Texaco station on 7th Avenue, is a button guy in the Magliocco Family and is very successful in operating a policy bookmaking operation."

On July 26, 1962 CI Scarpa reported: "[During] the past week he was contacted by Tony LaPonzina, whom he described as a good fellow in the Profaci Family and who operates a car wash in the general vicinity of 39th Street and 5th Avenue in Brooklyn and who is also in the numbers business. Informant advised LaPonzina proposed the idea to him that the Profaci Family take all of those currently interested in the numbers business who are members of the Family and they start their own bank. Informant stated LaPonzina was of the opinion that it was foolish for those running numbers operations in the Family to bank with members of other Families in New York City. He also stated LaPonzina pointed out that with the apparent end of the Gallo-Profaci feud in sight, assessments would be coming to all members of the Family and these assessments could be made up in part from the proceeds of this proposed bank. Informant stated he told LaPonzina he was not in favor of this at this time as he did not feel the bank would be strong enough, and before making any decision he would want to consult Joe Magliocco concerning this." (Joseph Magliocco was Acting Boss since the death of Joseph Profaci the previous month.)

On January 15, 1963 identified by FBI CI as Colombo Member. (This source might have been Gambino Soldier Alfred 'Freddie the Sidge' Santantonio, murdered July 1963 after his informant status became known.)

On January 29, 1963 CI Scarpa reported: "[Scarpa] observed photographs of the following individuals and made the comments noted...Joe Gentile aka Joe Lane - not a good fellow, but a close associate of the LaPonzinas."

On February 18, 1963 CI Scarpa identified Sorrentino's regime as including made members Benedetto 'Benny' D'Alessandro, Frank Fusco, Anthony LaPonzina, Ernest LaPonzina and Ralph LaPonzina.

Subsequently designated subject of FBI anti-racketeering investigation.

On March 6, 1963 CI Scarpa reported: "With respect to the LaPonzina brothers, Ralph, Ernie and Anthony, all three are 'good fellows' in the Magliocco Family and all three are assigned to the regime of Nick Sorrentino. Informant pointed out, however, that Ralph LaPonzina is currently in Florida and the last information informant had concerning him was that he was running a hardware store in or near Tampa."

On April 10, 1963 included in NYPD report of known gamblers.

On April 23, 1963 CI Scarpa reported: “Photographs of the following persons were exhibited to informant, and he made comments concerning them as set forth below: Anthony LaPonzina, NYPD B# 351664 – Informant advised LaPonzina is a ‘good fellow’ in the Magliocco Family in the regime of Nicoline Sorrentino.

On April 26, 1963 FBI CI reported: "[CI] advised [Frank Fusco] is associated with Tony, Ernie and Ralph LaPonzina in a bookmaking operation for Nickoline Sorrentino. Informant stated that the three LaPonzinas are 'Buttons' in the Magliocco Family under Sorrentino. This operation is headquartered in the Idlehours Cafe at 115 57th Street, Brooklyn, and in the candy store at the corner of 66th Street and 11th Avenue, Brooklyn. [CI] advised [Frank Fusco] operates a bookmaking setup with [Redacted] and two unknown writers. He is in partnership with [Redacted] NYPD Number [redacted] and Joseph Gentile [and] the LaPonzina brothers. [Fusco's sons Anthony], Salvatore [and] Richard [have] been arrested for bookmaking." (Within a couple of years Frank Fusco succeeded Sorrentino as Captain. Richard FuscoSalvatore 'Sally Buzzo' Fusco and Joseph 'Joe Lane' Gentile were inducted into the Colombo Family during the 1970s and 1980s.)

By Summer 1963 resided at 1429 Shore Parkway in Bath Beach, Brooklyn. Owned and operated T & T Auto Laundry.

On August 5, 1963 Frank Fusco interviewed by FBI: "Fusco stated that he is acquainted with the LaPonzina brothers and knows Ralph LaPonzina quite well, having grown up with him. He stated he has heard rumor to the effect that Ralph LaPonzina is a 'button' but he has never received any direct indication from Ralph himself that he, Ralph, is a 'button'."

On August 15, 1963 CI Scarpa reported: “[Frank] Fusco continues to run his bookmaking action from the luncheonette at 66th Street and 11th Avenue, Brooklyn, although he may not actually take any action in the luncheonette, members of his group who do take the action congregate there. He stated that if anyone is looking for Fusco the luncheonette is the place where he can always be contacted. Informant stated that he still believed Nick Sorrentino is the captain of Fusco and that Fusco probably banks his action through the LaPonzina brothers in Brooklyn.

On November 19, 1963 NYC Department of Investigations advised FBI: "[Ralph] LaPonzina was the apparent leader of his brothers Anthony, Fred and [Redacted; Ernest?] also designated as known gamblers by the NYPD. [In mid-1950s] Fred LaPonzina ran a horseroom for Ralph and when Ralph learned the Kings County District Attorney was conducting an investigation into the LaPonzina bookmaking operation, he attempted to bribe [Det and] LaPonzina was arrested...[NYC DoI] said he believes that LaPonzina was also involved in shylocking and the operation of dice games. He said during the investigation in Brooklyn it was determined numerous calls from the LaPonzina phones were made to Havana and Florida."

J. Colombo (2)
On April 5, 1964 Joseph Colombo was elected new Boss of the Colombo Family. He appointed Salvatore 'Charlie Lemons' Mineo as his Underboss. Consigliere position initially vacant.

Although LaPonzina enjoyed a close association with Former Boss Joseph Profaci, informant(s) later indicated this relationship did not carry over to Profaci's successor.

On May 5, 1964 CI Scarpa reported: "[He] has not seen Anthony LaPonzina for some period of time and has heard no specific references about him. Scarpa stated in his opinion, LaPonzina is still operating his numbers operation and shylocking activities in Brooklyn, but he definitely is not in close contact with any of the persons in authority in the new Family of Joe Colombo. Scarpa stated LaPonzina is a member of the Family and his opinion carries no specific weight as far as Family affairs are concerned."

On July 1, 1964 FBI CI reported: "[Ralph], Ernest and Anthony LaPonzina are all members of LCN and are now under the regime of Dick Fusco within the Joe Colombo Family."

On October 7, 1964 Unsub (Rocket Auto Wash) interviewed by FBI: "[UM] stated he knew Ralph LaPonzina and he was not actually an employee of his. However, he stated he had offered LaPonzina a deal in that if LaPonzina would locate sites for car washes, he would be paid a 3 to 5 percent commission if the deals materialized. He stated he would offer anyone the same deal, if through their contacts, he was instrumental in establishing a car wash. [UM] further indicated that he last saw LaPonzina in [July]. He also advised he knew Ralph LaPonzina through his brother, Anthony LaPonzina. He stated he and Anthony LaPonzina were partners at one time in the T and T Car Wash, Inc., which was located directly across the street from his present location."

On February 12, 1965 brother Ernest LaPonzina listed in FBI report on prominent New York area shylocks. Entry noted: "[LaPonzina] and his brothers are actively engaged in shylocking and numbers in Brooklyn."

F. Fusco (1965)
On May 15, 1965 the youngest daughter of Colombo Acting (Official?) Captain Frank Fusco was married, with the reception held at Claridge Caterers located at 631 Ave P in Gravesend. The event was heavily attended and, thanks to forewarning by CI Scarpa, a target of FBI surveillance. Those observed included Boss Joseph Colombo, Underboss Salvatore Mineo, at least eight of the nine Family Captains (Simone Andolino may not have been present), Lucchese Captain Carmine 'Gribbs' Tramunti and at least thirty-one identified Colombo Soldiers. Anthony and his brother Ernest LaPonzina were among the Sorrentino - Fusco crew members present.

Within a couple of days CI Scarpa reported that Frank Fusco had been appointed official Captain over the former Sorrentino crew.

Made members of Fusco's crew included FNU Colombo (1), FNU Colombo (2), Anthony LaPonzina, Ernest LaPonzina, Ralph LaPonzina and Frank 'Gandy' LoCicero.

Associates of interest included Fusco's sons Richard and Salvatore, Joseph Gentile and Albert 'Gooch' Mugnolo.

On October 18, 1965 brother Ralph interviewed in Florida: "..LaPonzina said his brother, Anthony LaPonzina, has a daughter who is believed engaged to [Redacted]." (Ralph agreed to at least a dozen interviews with Agents over the next few years; he gave his own background and made comments about certain associates or on crime in general, but refused to discuss anyone else's activities and provided no information of substance on LCN itself.)

On November 24, 1965 a meeting between Boss Joseph Colombo and the Fusco crew held at Fusco's residence in Dyker Heights. Colombo accompanied to meeting by Underboss Salvatore Mineo, Consigliere Benedetto D'Alessandro, Captains Vincent Aloi and John Franzese as well as FBI CI Gregory Scarpa. Scarpa subsequently reported that the meeting was held for Colombo to extend holiday greetings to the crew and to hear any problems the members were having in the Family. Scarpa noted: "[Among] the members of the regime present were Anthony and Ralph [sic; Ernest?] LaPonzina, Frank LoCicero, and four old men unknown to informant who were in their late 60's or early 70's. Informant related that he believed two of them were named Colombo, but were not related to 'Boss' Joseph Colombo. Informant stated that these latter four men were previously unknown to him and that in his position at the meeting he could not make any inquiry concerning the identities of these individuals. Informant stated it was his understanding that these 7 individuals made up the regime of Dick Fusco." (It's possible that Ralph LaPonzina and the crew's former head Nick Sorrentino remained in Florida and that Scarpa confused Ernest for Ralph.)

On March 26, 1966 the son of Colombo Soldier Michael Savino was married, with the reception held at Queens Terrace Caterers at 68-27 Roosevelt Ave in Woodside, Queens. Attendees included Boss Joseph Colombo, Underboss Salvatore Mineo, Consigliere Benedetto D'Alessandro, at least eight of the ten Family Captains (Harry Fontana and 'Big John' Misuraca may not have been present), and at least twenty-five Colombo Soldiers including Anthony LaPonzina. Others in attendance included Genovese Soldier (Acting Capo?) Joseph Schipani and Colombo Associates Frank 'Frankie the Beast' Falanga, Gennaro 'Jerry Lang' Langella, Nicholas Mainello, Hugh 'Apples' McIntosh, Joseph 'Butch' Musumeci and Alfonso 'Peanuts' Serrantonio.

On April 13, 1966 FBI CI reported: “[Anthony] LaPonzina is definitely a member of LCN and is in the Colombo Family.

On June 13, 1966 Ralph LaPonzina interviewed in Florida: "...He stated he has not seen his brother, Fred, in some time, but acknowledged his brother, Anthony LaPonzina, had visited him for several days during May. He stated Anthony was on vacation and has since returned to his home in New York."

On September 13, 1966 CI Scarpa reported: "[Anthony] LaPonzina is assigned to the regime of [Frank] Fusco and informant has seen him recently in Brooklyn. Informant pointed out LaPonzina is still active in gambling activities, but he does not carry much stature and is not highly regarded by members of the Colombo Family."

On September 22, 1966 Joseph Colombo was arrested by the NYPD. An address book confiscated at the time of arrest included entries for Anthony LaPonzina, his brother Ernest LaPonzina and others.

On July 31, 1967 FBI CI reported: "[While at Caplan Buick], he made a mention of Anthony LaPonzina at which time [Boss Joseph] Colombo made numerous disparaging remarks about this individual and stated he was not in the good graces of Joe Colombo at the present time. Colombo did not provide any reason for this outburst."

On September 13, 1967 FBI surveillance conducted in area of Mott and Mulberry Sts during Little Italy's Feast of San Gennaro in Manhattan. LaPonzina was observed with Colombo Captain Joseph Yacovelli at the corner of Grand and Mulberry Sts. Several other LCN members observed at various spots along Mulberry included Gambino Captain Joseph Gennaro, Colombo Soldier Anthony 'Gawk' Augello, Genovese Soldier Philip 'Philly Katz' Albanese, Gambino Soldier Vincent 'Jimmy the Blond' Corrao, Colombo Soldier John 'Mooney' Cutrone, Gambino Soldier Leonardo 'Leo' Grillo and Genovese Soldiers George 'Crumb' Tedesche and Philip 'Philly Brush' Tartaglia.

On September 14, 1967 CI Scarpa reported: "[He] is familiar with Anthony LaPonzina, whom he knows to be a member of the Colombo Family in the regime of Dick Fusco. Informant said LaPonzina 'can never seem to do anything right' and Joseph Colombo has always been annoyed with him. Informant said LaPonzina is not regarded very highly in the Colombo Family."

On December 9, 1967 Boss Joseph Colombo's son Anthony married, with the reception held at Queens Terrace Caterers in Woodside, Queens. Attendees included Joseph Colombo, DeCav Boss Simone 'Sam' DeCavalcante, Gambino Boss Carlo Gambino, at least six Colombo Family Captains including LaPonzina's crew leader Frank Fusco as well as at least twenty-four additional LCN members including Anthony and possibly Ralph LaPonzina. (The informant[s] who provided a list of those present may have mistaken another LaPonzina brother, possibly Ernest, for Ralph. Anthony Colombo was inducted into the Family after the books opened in the late 1970s.)

On March 26, 1968 FBI CI reported: “[In] the past three weeks numerous meetings have been held at either Cantalupo’s or on the street in front of Caplan Motors and he made a list of the people who have spoken to Joe Colombo or apparently meet others in the neighborhood. The people in the neighborhood in the last three weeks have been as follows: Anthony LaPonzina, Gregory Scarpa, Mike Savino, Rocco Miraglia, Harry Fontana, Frank Fusco, Nick Bianco, Benjamin LoCicero, John Cutrone, Cassandro Bonasera, Anthony Peraino, Alphonse D’Ambrosio, Richard Zorzi, Vincent Aloi, Carmine Persico, [Redacted].” (All listed were Colombo members.)

In September 1968 included in the FBI's list of 83 identified Colombo Family members.

On October 10, 1968 FBI CI identified LaPonzina via photo as a Colombo Soldier.

On December 16, 1968 FBI CI reported: "[He] identified photos of Ernie and Tony [LaPonzina] stating that Ralph was in Florida but comes up to New York about once a month. Ernie and Tony have the Rocket Car Wash on 19th Street and 7th Avenue, Brooklyn, where they conduct shylocking and gambling. They charge two points or whatever the traffic will bear up to five points. Informant noted numerous persons indebted to them pay them off in checks either their pay checks or checks made out to cash. These checks are then deposited or cashed by Ernie and Tony through the Rocket Car Wash Bank Account. Informant believes if bank account is located, many of the checks cleared through that account would show names of victims of the brothers. Ernie also operates card games on weekend nights at the Falcon Social Club on Fort Hamilton Avenue between 68th and 69th Streets. There are two tables in rear where blackjack and ziganetta are played. Informant noted one victim of the LaPonzinas was a W/M about 30 years of age who, about one year ago owned a Starter and Generator Shop on Coney Island Avenue about three or four stores before from the corner of Cortelyou Road in the right side of Coney Island Avenue headed toward Coney Island. This individual was so far in debt he was forced to go out of business to settle his account. The store is no longer open."

On December 30, 1968 FBI CI reported LaPonzina's continued presence, along with many other Family members and associates, in the vicinity of Cantalupo Realty and Caplan Motors in Bensonhurst. He also noted LaPonzina's attendance at a Christmas party hosted by Boss Joseph Colombo at Cantalupo Realty.

On March 8, 1969 Joseph Colombo Jr., son to the Boss, married in Brooklyn. A reception was held at Queens Terrace Caterers located at 68-27 Roosevelt Ave in Woodside, Queens. Many Colombo Members, including Anthony LaPonzina, were among the several hundred attendees. Guests from other Families include Gambino Boss Carlo Gambino, Gambino Captain Vincent Corrao, Lucchese Captain (?) John 'Johnny Dio' DioGuardi, Genovese Acting Captain Joseph Schipani and Gambino Soldier Pasquale 'Patsy' Crapanzano.

S. Peritore
On June 27, 1969 wake for relative of Colombo Soldier Salvatore 'Sammy' Peritore held at the Family-affiliated Prospero Funeral Home located at 2444 86th St in Bensonhurst. Attendees included Boss Joseph Colombo, at least three of the Family Captains including LaPonzina's crew leader Frank Fusco, and at least eight Colombo Soldiers including Anthony LaPonzina. Others in attendance included Gambino Captain Peter 'Petie Pumps' Ferrara, Colombo Associates Joseph 'Minx' Livoti and Hugh McIntosh as well as Gambino Associate Gandolfo 'Buddy' Sciandra.

J. Gentile
On October 9, 1969 CI Scarpa reported: "[Scarpa] identified a photograph of Joseph Gentile aka Joe Lane and advised although Lane is not a member of LCN, he is nevertheless extremely close to [Frank] Fusco and Anthony LaPonzina. Informant said Lane, LaPonzina and Fusco are partners in a large numbers operation, which also included horse and sports action, and meet on almost a daily basis concerning their mutual business interests. Informant also related in the past Lane also handled swag." (Joseph Gentile, believed on-record with LaPonzina's brother Ernest, was inducted into the Colombo Family in 1983.)

On November 19, 1969 FBI CI reported: "[During] the last month there has been a considerable amount of activity in the vicinity of [86th St in Bensonhurst]. He noticed the following individuals [redacted]: Joseph Colombo, [Redacted], Johnny Oddo, [Redacted], John Cutrone, Rocky Miraglia, Modesto Santoro, Salvatore Musacchio, Vinny Aloi, Frank Fusco, Anthony LaPonzina, Gregory Scarpa, [Redacted], Anthony Peraino, Benjamin LoCicero, John Franzese, Alphonse D'Ambrosio." (All were Colombo members.)

Same month included in the FBI's list of 79 identified Colombo Family members.

On April 20, 1970 Brooklyn District Attorney's Office advised FBI New York Office: "[Assistant District Attorney] advised the following individuals have all appeared before the Kings County Grand Jury and will appear again on [4/30]. [ADA] advised all individuals have been granted immunity and failure to testify on [4/30], before the Kings County Grand Jury will result in contempt proceedings being instituted against them: Gandolfo Sciandra, Charles Mineo, George Tropiano, Anthony LaPonzina, Frank Falanga, Mike Savino, Thomas Lombardi, Nick Bianco, John Cutrone, Mimi Scialo, Joseph Iannaci." (Thomas 'Tommy Dogs' Lombardi was a Genovese Soldier. Joseph 'Joe Notch' Iannaci was a Colombo Associate inducted in the 1980s. Frank 'Frankie the Beast' Falanga and Gandolfo Sciandra was Colombo and Gambino Associates respectively. The remainder were Colombo members.)

On June 11, 1970 LaPonzina and forty-six others were indicted for criminal contempt by the Brooklyn DA.

Among those charged were multiple high-ranking LCN members, as well as several Associates who would later become influential members themselves.

An update on the case was provided to FBI NY the following day: "[Brooklyn DA] stated these arrests came off 'clock work fashion' and there was only a minor incident where slight scuffle took place involving Philip Rastelli, James Failla, and Dominick Scialo at the time they were being escorted to the prisoner van to the Brooklyn Supreme Court building. [DA] stated also Rastelli, while being escorted out of the Kings County Municipal Building, where the DA's office is located, attempted to assault a news photographer which resulted in a slight injury to the photographer's hand. Further, at the conclusion of the arraignments, [DA] stated Dominick Scialo became vociferous and boisterous and claimed harassment to the Italians on the part of the [redacted] and himself, [DA] and as a result had to be restrained...[DA] stated in conclusion of the 46 individuals originally indicted, 37 have now been either arrested, have surrendered to this office, and, of the remaining nine individuals, he anticipates that they will all be accounted for within the next two or three days, with the exception of Frank Mari and James Episcopia, both of whom are missing and presumed dead."

On August 26, 1970 CI Scarpa reported: “[The] Fortway Realty Corporation located on 77th Street and 13th Avenue, [redacted]. He said he learned [Redacted] is a close friend of Colombo and he has noted that Joe Lane, Ernest LaPonzina and Richard Fusco regularly visit [Redacted]. Informant said in addition, ‘Shorty’ Spero, who is close to Carmine Persico, is also a regular at the realty corporation. Informant stated it is his guess that this realty company must be the headquarters for some type of gambling operation, but is certain it is not the ‘bank’ previously mentioned by informant.” (Colombo Associate Thomas 'Shorty' Spero [1931-1980] was inducted into the Colombo Family after the books opened in the late 1970s. Informant stated he has heard Dick Fusco is out of New York possibly in Miami and he is on the lam trying to avoid either a subpoena or a warrant...[As] of 9/23/70, he has heard that Joe Lane [Gentile] has split up with the LaPonzinas and is now tied up very closely with Dick Fusco. Informant noted that Joe Lane has for many years been jumping from one partner to another. Informant stated at one time Lane was very well connected with Jimmy Plumeri, thereafter involved himself with the LaPonzinas, which he has previously reported and now is allied with Dick Fusco. Word on the street is that Lane is going to get himself in trouble for switching from one wise guy to another. Informant stated the activities he has previously reported on that were Joe Lane's and the LaPonzinas are now Joe Lane's and Dick Fusco." (James 'Jimmy Doyle' Plumeri [1903-1971], a Former Lucchese Captain, was murdered the following year.)

On September 24, 1970 brother Ralph interviewed in Florida: "[He] was going up to New York to visit his brother Anthony LaPonzina, who recently suffered a heart attack. He indicated he would be in New York City briefly."

On October 30, 1970 FBI CI reported: "[Joe] Gentile, aka Joe Lane is in addition to being a very large bookmaker in Brooklyn, a very extensive gambler himself. He stated Lane, who operates with the LaPonzinas out of Rocket Industries on 7th Avenue in Brooklyn, recently lost a large sum of money, approximately $20,000, as a result of his own personal gambling and as a result of his numbers operation being hit very heavily. Informant stated Dick Fusco, who is Captain under Joseph Colombo, oversees Lane's operation and when Lane is short of money as in the above instance, Fusco will lend him whatever he needs at one point a week...Informant further advised Ralph LaPonzina, who resides in Florida, comes up to New York approximately once a month and meets with Joe Lane and Ernest LaPonzina."

Informant does not know his specific activity; in the evening this son of Lane meets with [Redacted] as these two run a gambling-loansharking operation together which is centered on Fort Hamilton Parkway Exchange, 60's and 70's, and along 8th Avenue in Brooklyn. The 11th Ave action is handled by the LaPonzina faction."

On January 25, 1971 FBI CI reported: "[About] one week ago Joe Gentile returned from a week's vacation in Florida and continues to be active in his gambling operation which consists mainly of sports and horse race betting. Informant stated that [redacted] operates one of Gentile's spots which is a [redacted]. Informant stated approximately one month ago this spot was raided by the NYPD but no arrests were made. He stated Gentile knew two days in advance the raid was to take place and as such, made sure the place was 'clean' when the raiding officers came in. Informant stated that to the best of his knowledge [Redacted] has no previous arrests and has [redacted]. His store is furnished with clothing through [Redacted], an associate of Gentile's who has a clothing store in Williamsburg and who handles bets for Gentile in that section of the city. Informant stated [Redacted] originally owned [redacted] located across the street from [redacted] but eventually these establishments were turned over to Gentile and the LaPonzinas. Informant stated he does not know if the LaPonzinas still have an interest in [redacted] but he theorized that the turn over of these places to the LaPonzinas was due to [Redacted] being heavily in debt to them."

On February 10, 1971 FBI CI reported: "[About] one month ago he was asked by Joe Lane to arrange for a junket to Las Vegas for Lane and some of his associates. The junket never materialized but in order for the informant to make the arrangements, Lane gave him the names, addresses and phone numbers of the individuals planning to go. They are as follows: [Redacted list; included Ernest and Frank LaPonzina]. It is to be noted Frank LaPonzina may be identical to Fidele LaPonzina. Informant stated the only LaPonzinas that are members of LCN are Ernie, Anthony, and Ralph, who resides in Florida."

In fact, just a few weeks ago he heard that one of them had been arrested for stealing. The circumstances surrounding the arrest are unknown to him." (It's not known who Barbieri's crew leader was during the early 1970s, but by the summer of 1973 he was under recently appointed Captain Dominick Scialo.)

On May 14-22, 1972 brother Ralph visited New York.

By June 1972 the FBI in New York had initiated a large-scale gambling case against Frank Fusco and the LaPonzinas. Late that month FBI Miami noted: "To date no direct information has been developed [in case] indicating participation by Ralph LaPonzina in the bookmaking and shylocking activity of his brothers. However, LaPonzina's ability to live in the upper middle class style without any employment or known legal investments is to [SA] good reason to suspect that he is deriving income from his brothers' activities."

On July 26, 1972 FBI NYO reported: "It is estimated by [SA] that this gambling operation is one of the largest in New York with a daily handle of between $25,000 and $40,000, and has been operating under the aegis of the Colombo Family for several years."

On August 11, 1972 brother Ernest and several other Colombo members were present at the Neopolitan Noodle when a gunman mistakenly opened fire on a group of civilians, killing two and wounding two others. None of the intended Colombo targets were hit.

Surveillance at Miami disclosed Mugnolo and Anthony LaPonzina surveyed premises of Miami Originals in Hialeah, a Lombardozzi controlled firm. While in Miami they stayed at the residence of Ralph LaPonzina and utilized a Thunderbird automobile registered to [Ralph's wife]. Mugnolo and Anthony LaPonzina departed Miami [10/2]. It is to be noted Ralph LaPonzina was not observed at his residence during the visit of Anthony LaPonzina and Albert Mugnolo. Ralph allegedly was hospitalized at Columbus Hospital at the time and did not return to his residence until [10/6]." (Gambino Soldier John Lombardozzi [1925-1980] was the younger brother of Former Gambino Captain Carmine Lombardozzi, mentioned above as a partner of Ralph's in bookmaking during the late 1950s. Albert 'Gooch' Mugnolo, believed on-record with Ernest LaPonzina, was considered for membership after the books opened in 1976 but is believed to have been chased from the Family before being inducted.)

On November 17, 1972 Robert Barbieri interviewed re whereabouts of Anthony's fugitive brother: "[He] is acquainted with Ernie LaPonzina. However, he is on friendlier terms with Tony LaPonzina. He stated that Ernie LaPonzina owned the Rocket Car Wash and all the cars from Robert's Foods used to be washed there. From rumors he heard, Ernie got in a fight with his partner and his half of the business was taken over by his brother, Tony LaPonzina. This goes back a couple of years and Barbieri does not know if Tony still has an interest in this car wash. He has not seen Ernie in approximately nine months and he heard Tony was arrested for a hijacking approximately four months ago. He stated he did not know Joseph Gentile and he had never heard Ernie or Tony had any connection with a gambling operation with this Gentile. For himself, he advised he is not a gambler, his only vice is pinochle."
