Salvatore Fusco (Colombo)

c. 1990s
Salvatore 'Sally Boy / Buzzo' Fusco was a member of the Colombo Family.

Part of the first group inducted after the books opened in the 1976, he served as the Family's Acting Boss for a time in the early 2000s.

He may have also been a Captain during the mid-1990s.

His father Frank 'Dickie' Fusco (1904-1992) was a former Colombo Captain.

Younger brother Richard aka 'Richie Nerves' (1936-2013) was in the administration in the late 2000s.

Son Salvatore Fusco Jr. has been identified in various court documents and articles as a made member as well.

Salvatore was born  April 9, 1931 in Brooklyn to Frank (27y) and Rose DeFalco (29y). Parents both believed to be Campanian, with Frank likely from Quindici in Avellino.

At the time of birth the Fuscos were residing at 1163 66th St in Brooklyn's Dyker Heights neighborhood. The family remained at this residence up through the 1960s.

1950s

In 1954 Salvatore worked as a cargo checker on the Waterfront.

On January 27, 1958 he visited Fortunato Aurigemma (28y), serving ten-to-fifteen years for robbery at Green Haven Prison in Stormville, New York. (The father of Aurigemma [1929-1982] hailed from Monteforte Irpino in Avellino, probably the same town where Salvatore's mother was born.)

Salvatore's first arrest of record came March 16, 1959 when he was picked up for bookmaking by the New York Police Department in Brooklyn. Around March 1, 1960 fined $25 in Special Sessions Court.

1960s

On April 7, 1960 arrested on a policy charge and convicted later the same month. Around May 16 fined $25 in Special Sessions Court.

On February 20, 1961 arrested in the 66th Precinct in Brooklyn on another bookmaking charge. Acquitted that September in Gamblers Court.

Fuscos in the 1960s (L to R): Frank, Salvatore, Richard
By the early 1960s Salvatore and his brother Richard were working with their father in a bookmaking operation run from a candy store at 11th Ave and 66th St.

Frank Fusco, suspected of holding a hidden interest in the store, was then a made member reporting to Colombo Captain Nick Sorrentino.

Made members of Sorrentino's crew included Frank Fusco and the LaPonzina brothers Anthony, Ernest and Ralph.

Associates included the Fusco brothers, Joseph 'Joe Lane' Gentile and Albert 'Gooch' Mugnolo.

On July 5, 1962 FBI CI Gregory Scarpa, a Colombo Soldier, reported: "[Scarpa] described Salvatore Fusco as a son of Dick Fusco, a ‘button man’ in the Magliocco Family. He allegedly helps in a bookmaking operation involving his father and others. At this time, however, [Scarpa] definitely stated that subject is not a ‘button’.

By Fall 1963 Salvatore moved to 1121 82nd St in Dyker Heights.

On February 24, 1965 the Colombo Family held a meeting in the home's basement.

Those present included Boss Joseph Colombo, his Underboss Salvatore 'Charlie Lemon' Mineo and the majority of the Family Captains.

Purpose of meeting primarily to welcome Salvatore's father Frank, by then Nick Sorrentino's Acting Captain, back from a stay at John Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore.

On March 23, 1965 another Family meeting was held at the residence.

About two months later Salvatore's father Frank was appointed official Captain over the former Sorrentino crew.

The Fuscos used the Pompeii Social Club at 6705 11th Ave in Dyker Heights as their base of operations. Card games were held and the crew's various other gambling interests were overseen from the club.

By 1966 Salvatore owned IL&C Motor Lines in East Williamsburg, Brooklyn.

In 1967 Colombo Associate Gregory DePalma applied for a business loan re Smart Shop in Manhattan's Little Italy. Salvatore, DePalma's 'personal friend', pledged his savings account as collateral.

On September 8, 1967 CI Scarpa reported: "[Frank] Fusco operates horses and numbers on a large scale in Brooklyn and has never been 'busted' inasmuch as he makes payoffs to numerous police officers in Brooklyn. Informant said the bank for Fusco's operation is handled by his son, Salvatore Fusco aka Sally Buzzo, from his home which is located on 82nd Street in Brooklyn between 11th and 12th Avenues. Informant continued that he had recently heard Sally Buzzo had in his garage the proceeds of a rare coin theft, which took place approximately 4 months ago at [JFK Airport], and these coins included ancient Roman coins in a 'one of a kind' variety and they were attempting to sell them for $30,000. Informant said, however, they had experienced difficulty and doubts whether they have been fenced because of the fact of their uniqueness and a dealer probably could not sell them on the market."

By early 1969 Colombo members were using the Fusco residence as a weekly meeting spot to settle up the Family treasury. CI Scarpa noted 'a CPA is actually used to keep the books' and that Frank Fusco contributed $50,000 to the fund shortly after Joseph Colombo was elected Boss in 1964.

On November 3, 1969 CI Scarpa reported: "[Joseph] Colombo would hold another Christmas party for other members of his Family at the home of [Frank] Fusco's son. Informant said this party would probably be held in the finished basement at this location."

1970

In October the FBI began directly investigating Fusco: "[He] is the son of longtime Colombo LCN member Frank Richard Fusco. While there is no information that Salvatore Fusco is, himself, a member of LCN, information has been developed indicating Fusco is very close to [Boss Joseph] Colombo & might be actively engaged in handling gambling operations of the Colombo Family."

1971

On January 21 FBI CI reported: "[Frank] Fusco's two sons, Salvatore and Richard, handle [redacted; bookmaking?]. Informant stated the Pompeii Social Club is still a gathering place for this crew."

On February 9 FBI CI reported: "[Gambling] operation at Tedesco's Junk Yard, Brooklyn, belongs to Dick Fusco. Patty Tedesco is being paid to allow the operation in his establishment, but [Redacted] runs it for Fusco. Fusco also has a game operating in a house on 63rd Street between 10th Avenue and Fort Hamilton Parkway, Brooklyn. The house is located on the right hand side of this one-way street. Fusco has two sons who are involved in their father's operation."

On March 17 FBI CI reported: "[Joseph] Gentile and [Frank] Fusco both have sons who seem to be representing them while [Ernest] LaPonzina has a number of brothers who can look after his action."

On March 26 Agents with the FBI's Miami Field Office photographed Colombo Soldier Ralph LaPonzina and Associates Richard Fusco, Salvatore Fusco, Dominick 'Donnie Shacks' Montemarano and an Unsub at a local country club. (The Unsub was possibly Vincent Costanza [1921-2010] who married the Fuscos' older sister.)

That month Colombo Soldier Joseph 'Crazy Joe' Gallo was released from New York State Prison and resumed his subversive behavior towards the Family leadership.

P. Bevacqua
CI Scarpa later reported that, as tensions mounted, he observed Salvatore Fusco, Colombo Associate Paul Bevacqua and others armed and posted up at various Colombo hangouts along 86th St.

On June 28 Colombo was shot and seriously wounded during the Italian-American Civil Rights League Unity Day in Manhattan. (Colombo remained disabled until his death in 1978.)

On August 20 CI Scarpa reported: "[Frank Fusco] had a very bad heart attack and was very sick. [Because] of this Fusco had to give up all his gambling interests to his sons and he feels Fusco will definitely retire from his organized crime interests because of this. [Scarpa] explained that Fusco had been very 'close' to Colombo and this would be a perfect opportunity for Fusco to make his 'exit'."

C. Persico (L) and E. LaPonzina
On December 21 CI Scarpa reported: "[He] has noticed lately that Salvatore Fusco, the son of Dick Fusco, has recently become increasingly close with Carmine Persico, and they may be considering merging their gambling operation. Informant pointed out Dick Fusco of late has been very sick and had recently returned to the hospital and Ernie LaPonzina was presently 'acting captain' for Fusco."

1972

On November 28 Salvatore Fusco and Albert Mugnolo spent a couple days in Miami, staying at the Voyager Hotel. An informant noted: "[Redacted] and [Redacted] went to Miami to see Sally Boy Fusco to fix up a marker they owed. It had to be squared by Friday. They got an okay from Sally Boy that his father and he would sit down with Joe Lane [Gentile]. The problem is they collected $20,000 - $25,000 from one of Joe Lane's customers and blew it in a game."

J. Gentile
On December 1 FBI CI reported: "[Ernie] LaPonzina and Sally Fusco are blaming Joseph Gentile for [redacted] by the FBI. Informant stated they are all staying away from Gentile as they feel he is through." (In September 1983 sixty-nine-year-old Gentile was inducted into the Family.)

On December 7 FBI CI reported: "...Sally Fusco and his associates are conducting business of an unknown nature in Miami as he felt the FBI made New York too hot for him."

1973

P. Sabatino
On January 17 among 3 arrested following indictment by the US Attorney's Office in Brooklyn on bank fraud (false loan statement) charges. The others indicted were Salvatore's younger brother Anthony and Colombo Associate Peter Sabatino.

The following day Fusco was named by CI Scarpa as one of the participants in negotiations, spearheaded by Scarpa, to return jewels stolen from Brooklyn's Regina Pacis Shrine. (Twenty years prior another Colombo Member, Ralph 'Bucky' Emmino, was murdered by the Family for stealing from the same parish.)

A. Mugnolo (1974)
On March 22 DEA advised FBI: "[Agent] indicated that he had received information that Salvatore Fusco expended a sum of money for a shipment of heroin that was to be picked up in Miami by either [Albert] Mugnolo or a Genovese Soldier [Redacted]." The FBI subsequently noted: "Since [3/73], Salvatore Celambrino, Sr., has died and [Redacted] has moved to the Miami area from the Lower East Side of NYC, [redacted]." (Albert Mugnolo [1933-1999], on-record with Fusco crew member Ernest LaPonzina, was considered for membership after the books opened in 1976 but is believed to have been chased from the Family before being inducted. Genovese Captain Salvatore 'Skinny Sal' Celambrino died in 1971.)

On May 25 Frank Fusco and twenty-one others were indicted by USAO EDNY for involvement in an interstate gambling business. Several made members and associates in Fusco's crew were also indicted, although both Richard and Salvatore Fusco escaped any charges.

By the summer Frank Fusco had been demoted or stepped down from his Captain position.

C. Panarella
On July 26 CI Scarpa provided an update on the Colombo Family's structure and the activities of various members. Scarpa identified Charles 'Charlie Moose' Panarella as a Captain and named Frank Fusco and his sons as Panarella crew members.

On August 24 Scarpa reported: "Dick Fusco: Back in Brooklyn; hates [Former Captain Nick] Sorrentino and the LaPonzina brothers; not active in gambling operation run by his sons."

On August 27 FBI CI reported: "[Albert] Mugnolo and Sally Fusco are making a deal with [redacted paragraph re narcotics]. Informant stated that there are other members of the Colombo Family involved besides the above mentioned, but as yet he has not determined their identity. Informant further advised he will be in a position to keep the FBI advised of the progress of the deal between Fusco, Mugnolo and [Redacted]. The writer disseminated the above to [DEA]."

A. Persico (1970s)
On November 13 FBI CI reported: "[Salvatore] Fusco is very close to [Redacted] and several weeks ago met with Allie Persico. Sally continues to reside on 82nd Street, near 11th Avenue, and drives a brown Chrysler Imperial with a beige top. Fusco attended [redacted]." (Alphonse 'Allie Boy' Persico [1929-1989] was the Colombo Consigliere and older brother of Carmine, then serving a fourteen year sentence for hijacking.)

1974

On January 3 FBI surveillance was set up on the residence of Underboss Anthony 'Abbey' Abbatemarco in Dyker Heights. At 9:43 AM Salvatore Fusco observed. At 9:54 AM he left the residence and drove to a nearby candy store at 6703 11th Ave. At 10:27 AM Captain Joseph 'Little Joey' Brancato, accompanied by Unspecified Male (40y) (Poss. Associate Carmine 'Turi' Franzese) exited the residence and departed in Brancato’s vehicle. At 10:45 AM Boss Thomas DiBella arrived. At 11:18 AM Abbatemarco and DiBella left in DiBella’s vehicle and drove to the Bath Beach residence of Consigliere Alphonse Persico. Abbatemarco observed entering and exiting shortly thereafter. DiBella and Abbatemarco then drove to Hal & Buddy’s Candy Store at 1482 86th St in Bensonhurst. Abbatemarco again entered and exited shortly thereafter. The pair then drove to 89th St and Narrows Ave where parked and entered rear door to 8801 Shore Rd in Bay Ridge. At 12:06 PM they left in DiBella's auto.

F. Tieri
On January 15 CI Scarpa reported: "[The] Persico faction, who is now in control of the Colombo Family, has aligned itself very closely with the Genovese group and Allie Boy Persico and Charlie 'Moose' Panarella often use Salvatore Fusco as an intermediary in setting up meetings with Funzy Tieri through his intermediary, Dutchie Tuzio, owner of the Villa 66." (Frank 'Funzi' Tieri [1904-1981] was the Genovese Boss and Anthony 'Dutchie' Tuzio [1909-1976] a Soldier.)

On January 15 FBI CI reported: "[Colombo Associate] Nicky Black Grancio, Sally Fusco, and several other 'heavy' Colombo figures were planning a gambling junket to Las Vegas, leaving on [1/23]." (Nicholas Grancio [1927-1992] was an associate under Captain Nicholas 'Jiggs' Forlano.)

On January 23 FBI CI reported: "[The] Fuscos are on 11th Avenue, handling contacts on a daily basis with various individuals including Anthony and Ernie LaPonzina, [Redacted], Joe Gentile, and various other individuals. [These] individuals have not been around for a couple of weeks and things are more quiet than usual. [Redacted] is usually on 11th Avenue two or three times a week in the afternoon. [He] was told by [Redacted] the FBI had dropped the gambling case against Dick Fusco involving Joe 'Joe Lane' Gentile."

J. Yacovelli (L) and S. Fusco (c. 1974)
On March 1 Colombo Soldier Joseph 'Joe Yak' Yacovelli and Salvatore Fusco were observed by FBI exiting Federal Courthouse at 225 Cadman Plaza in Manhattan.

Fusco was approached for an interview: "...Inasmuch as it appeared as though Fusco was acting as a bodyguard for Joseph Yacovelli, he was requested to identify himself and was afforded a 'pat down' search. Fusco was asked if he had driven Joseph Yacovelli to the courthouse this day. He replied he had. He was asked if he had driven Yacovelli two days earlier, where he (Yacovelli) had surrendered [re Fugitive / Murder case]. He replied he had. Fusco was then asked where he picked Yacovelli up. He replied he could not remember. When asked a second time where he had picked up Yacovelli, he inquired whether he was required to answer that question. When asked a third time he replied he would answer no further questions until he had an opportunity to consult with an attorney [and was] served with a subpoena ordering his appearance before [Eastern District Federal Grand Jury]."

FBI noted: "[Pair] engaged in conversation by [Special Agent and] Yacovelli invited SA to make a search of the automobile. Fusco then said 'go ahead, search'. A search was made of the inside of the car including the trunk. A baseball bat was observed lying on the back seat. No other evidence was observed and nothing was signed. With Fusco driving, the two then proceeded via a circuitous route to 261 Broadway, where they were observed entering the building at that address." (Joseph Yacovelli [1928-2006], formerly the Acting Boss, retained considerable influence and was a central figure in the internal dissension that followed a couple of years later.)

Five days later Fusco drove Yacovelli when the latter answered his own FGJ subpoena.

J. Pate (1976)
On March 7 CI Scarpa reported: "[He] heard Sally Fusco and John Pate, two of Charlie Moose's guys, were involved in beating up a contractor from Long Island by the name of Falco." [John Pate (1941-) was inducted into the Family in the late 1970s and later rose to Captain. Like the Fuscos, he supported Persico in the early 1990s war.)

On April 10 CI Scarpa reported: "[Charles] Panarella, Gregory Scarpa, Salvatore Fusco and Jimmy Brown Clemenza met in a very 'heavy meet' at the Blueprint 100, a new exclusive restaurant at 100 Park Avenue, New York City, about two weeks ago. Informant is unaware of the exact nature of the conversation but felt it dealt with an attempt by [Redacted] and his crew to expand his influence in the Bartenders and Restaurant Employee Union. Informant stated nothing more has been brought up with regard to the Falco Construction Company." (The following month Colombo Soldier James 'Jimmy Brown' Clemenza [1911-1993] was promoted to Captain over a newly formed crew consisting primarily of Florida-based oldtimers.)

On May 2 FBI CI reported: "Joe Yak spends most of his time at his mother's house in New Jersey. Sally Fusco is with him daily and Yak spends most of his time cooking. Sally Fusco thinks the 'agents' are following him on a continual basis."

On May 23 Agents interviewed Yacovelli: "He said he had a current driver's license, but had no car. When his presence is required in New York, he said he has Salvatore Fusco pick him up and drive him to the city."

On May 30 FBI CI Gregory Scarpa provided an update on the Colombo Family structure. He identified Charles Panarella as both official Captain and Acting Consigliere and named Frank Fusco and his sons as Panarella crew members.

On June 11 Fusco and an Unsub were surveilled by the FBI in discussion on 11th Ave in Dyker Heights.

On July 11 FBI CI reported: "[Joe] Yac has been demoted to a 'Soldier'; is currently 'laying low' because of his problems. Informant states Sal Fusco has been told to [redacted]. Informant advised Yacovelli's problem is [redacted] and other LCN Families 'mind their own business'."

On July 16 Yacovelli was interviewed: "[He] is not currently employed and has no definite future employment plans. He said when he travels to New York it is usually in the company of Salvatore Fusco."

On August 30 FBI CI reported: "[Sally] Fusco has not been seen lately at his usual haunts and has taken it on the lam ‘looking to duck a subpoena’ as a result of the Abbatemarco ‘bug’." (Earlier that month Abbatemarco was informed that his car had been bugged since March.)

V. Corrao
On September 13 FBI CI reported: "[Sal] Fusco observed vicinity of Caplan Buick, 86th Street, meeting with Joe LaRosa and/or Jimmy the Blond about once a week." (Joseph LaRosa [1931-2006] was Former Boss Joseph Colombo's brother-in-law and shows up on later Govt lists as a member. Vincent 'Jimmy the Blond' Corrao [1909-1976] was a Former Gambino Captain.)

He declined to discuss his relationship with Joseph Yacovelli...Fusco said he was acquainted with Carmine DiBiase, but had not seen him in several years. He said he was aware DiBiase was a fugitive from a Federal arrest warrant. He was then advised of the provision of the harboring statute. Fusco said that he was acquainted with Anthony Ricciardi, having met him several times. He said he had no idea who might have killed him." (Colombo Soldier Anthony 'Tony Long' Ricciardi had been shot to death three days previous.)

On November 7 FBI CI reported: “[Frank] Fusco is in the hospital in Texas somewhere and his son Sally is still on the lam ducking a subpoena for the Abbatemarco car bug case.

That month Salvatore (temporarily?) closed the Pompeii Social Club.

On December 12 he was surveilled at Yacovelli's residence.

On December 23 FBI CI (Colombo Member Source?) reported: "Anthony Abbatemarco has utilized the office of Attorney [Redacted] for a meet with Joe Yacovelli. [CI] states there were others in the room but Yak and Abbey split and went into another room for a conversation. [CI] states Sally Fusco sent by Abbey to drive Yak around. [CI] states in regard to [Redacted; Carmine DiBiase?] it is Family policy to 'take care of him' while he is 'on the lam' and his belief Joe Yak and Sally Fusco would have to get money to him [redacted] personal family as well."

1975

On February 18 an FBI spot check of Fusco's residence noted a vehicle registered to Henry Vitiello (45y). (Vitiello [1929-2004] was from Naples, Campania.)

He also knew Salvatore D'Ambrosio from childhood, but has no idea what happened to him...He is not involved in any trucking firm with Salvatore Fusco, and never has been." (Colombo Soldier Salvatore 'Sally D.' D'Ambrosio disappeared in November 1969.)

On March 28 FBI CI reported: “[Former] Acting Boss Anthony Abbatemarco continues to be pretty much neutralized and preoccupied with his legal and health problems. He receives few visitors and will walk over to Sally Albanese’s house for a few hours periodically. Source states Sally Albanese broke his leg in three places and as a result is restricted in activity...Source advised [Redacted] recently was released from prison and on parole and would stop by to see Abbey Abbatemarco as a sign of respect. Source states [Redacted] is a long time 'muscle kid' for Jr. Persico and comes from [redacted]. [Redacted] is with 'Gooch' Mugnolo and Sally Fusco three or four nights a week [and] was recently observed to be driving Sally Fusco's car."

On May 1 Fusco's auto was spotted at Scatturo Food Market on 11th Ave.

In early February the New York Families opened the books and inductions resumed. Each Family was initially allowed ten new members. On February 5 Fusco was made as part of this initial group under Joseph Yacovelli's sponsorship.

The first available informant report confirming the inductions took place came five days later on February 10.

On March 3 FBI CI reported: "[He] has ascertained that Salvatore Fusco was made recently in the Colombo Family under [Redacted]. He further related Sally Fusco is the son of Dick Fusco a button man from Brooklyn in the same crew...Source continued because the bosses fear the FBI will know of any party they may have for new members in LCN that a party may not be held for the new members."

Made members reporting direct to Abbatemarco included first wave inductees Salvatore Albanese, Salvatore Fusco, Philip 'Fat Foongie' Gambino, Joseph 'Joe Black' Gorgone, Anthony Scarpati and Thomas Spero.

By the middle of November the Family had divided into two camps. One side supported Boss Thomas DiBella and the Persicos. The other, headed by Yacovelli and Abbatemarco, felt that DiBella favored the Persicos too strongly and sought to remove him as Boss.

The Yacovelli - Abbatemarco faction had the support of Family Captains Joseph Brancato, James Clemenza, Vincent Gugliaro and Salvatore Lombardino Jr.

Fusco's former crew leader Charles Panarella was the only Captain loyal to the Persicos, although some of Panarella's men, including Colombo Soldier and Former FBI CI Gregory Scarpa, threw in with Yacovelli.

The Commission was called in to resolve the dispute and sided with DiBella, leading to Abbatemarco and other dissidents being demoted and the Family undergoing a large scale reorganization.

Abbatemarco's crew was broken up and split between newly promoted Captains Gennaro Langella and Andrew Russo. Fusco was placed with Langella.

G. Langella
As of January 12 made members reporting to Langella included Salvatore Fusco, Anthony Scarpati and Thomas Spero.

The same month Fusco was included in the FBI's list of 67 identified Colombo Family members. Report noted he was recently inducted.

By early March the Langella crew had expanded to include Former Captain Joseph Brancato as well as Soldiers Joseph Peraino, Modesto 'Duke' Santoro and John 'Johnny Green' Scimone.

Former Langella crew member Anthony Scarpati was by then reporting direct to Consigliere Alphonse Persico and within a few months was himself promoted to Captain.

1978

On June 6 Fusco's brother Richard and nine others were indicted on conspiracy and bank fraud charges re the Westchester Premier Theatre. He later pleaded guilty and served about two years.

F. DeCicco
Salvatore was a suspected co-conspirator in the December 19 Staten Island robbery of nearly $2.5 million from a Wells Fargo armored truck.

Additional participants believed included Gambino Soldier Frank DeCicco and Gambino Associate Joseph 'Joe Sis' Siciliano. An FBI investigation resulted in no charges filed against most of the suspects: "Total Unsubs involved in this crime were 7. Intensive investigation conducted by the New York Office identified the 7 subjects responsible [however], a prosecutable case could only be conducted against [Redacted]. No money was recovered from this crime and the remaining subjects were not prosecuted principally because of a lack of evidence and cooperation from [Redacted]." (Joseph Siciliano [1935-1989] was later inducted into the Gambinos. Frank DeCicco join in the plot to assassinate Boss Paul Castellano in 1985, was named the Family's new Underboss, then died in a joint Genovese - Lucchese bombing carried out as retaliation for the Castellano hit.)

1979

On October 17, 1980 included in the FBI's list of 90 identified Colombo Family members.

An FBI chart compiled the same date noted that Captain Anthony Scarpati's crew now included additional Soldiers Vincent Aloi, Gregory Scarpa and Gregory Scarpa Jr.

On December 16, 1985 CI Scarpa named Fusco's son, Colombo Associate Salvatore Fusco Jr., as one of the participants in a recent Chase Bank robbery. Scarpa noted the weapons used were supplied by Colombo Soldier Theodore Persico's son Teddy Jr.

On June 10, 1986 CI Scarpa reported: “Regarding Richard Fusco, source said he is the son of Colombo member Dick Fusco, and brother of Salvatore Fusco. Source had no other identifying information.” (This could suggest that the FBI received information from another source that Richard Fusco was now a member and they contacted Scarpa to verify.)

Included in the April 1988 Senate Chart of Colombo Family membership.

Around that time Richard Fusco was promoted to Captain. It's not clear whether Salvatore was immediately assigned to his brother.

1990

On July 23, 1990 CI Scarpa reported: “Scarpa advised Sal Fusco has a club at 11th Avenue and 66th Street, Brooklyn where he conducts a loansharking and gambling operation.” (Richard Fusco was suspected of owning the candy store nearby 11th and 67th.)

On July 12 included in FBI list of Colombo Family members residing in New Jersey.

By the end of that year Fusco's son Salvatore Jr. was inducted into the Family, likely in a ceremony presided over by Acting Boss Vic Orena.

Orena was Acting on behalf of the imprisoned Carmine Persico.

1991

By June made members of Richard Fusco's crew included Benjamin 'Benji' Castellazzo, his father Frank Fusco and brother Salvatore Fusco, nephew Salvatore Fusco Jr., Lawrence Lampasi Jr., Ernest LaPonzina and Joseph 'Lefty' SanGiorgio.

Associates included Anthony Albanese, Vincent 'Jimmy' Giangiobbe, Petey LNU, Anthony 'The Arab' Sayegh and James 'Jimmy O'Toole' Spitalere.

Richard had recently put Spitalere's name up for membership and a ceremony was planned for June 21 at Colombo Soldier Joel 'Joe Waverly' Cacace's social club in Homecrest, Brooklyn. Spitalere and Cutolo crew member Vincent 'Chickie' DeMartino were to be inducted.

Consigliere Carmine Sessa got wind of a plan by Vic Orena and his supporters to have both himself and Richard Fusco murdered at the club on that date.

In response the Persico loyalists decided to strike first and failed attempts were made on Orena and Acting Underboss Joseph Scopo.

This ultimately kicked off a back and forth shooting war that lasted into the following year.

Although Richard was an active Captain for the Persico side, available sources don't mention what role his brother Salvatore played, if any.

His son Salvatore Jr. is depicted as a Persico Captain in a Brooklyn DA chart compiled in the 2000s.

Numerous arrests and subsequent defections brought the hostilities to a cease by the middle of 1992. (Exception being Orena's Acting Underboss Joseph Scopo who was shot to death in October 1993.)

1992

In November Joseph Ambrosino, a former Colombo Associate on the Persico side, testified in the Federal racketeering trial of Acting Captain Michael Sessa.

He mentioned Salvatore Fusco only briefly when questioned about Petey LNU, a Fusco associate loaned to Sessa to aid in that crew's attempts on various Orena members:
"
Q: Who is Petey?

A: He's an associate of Richie and Sally Fusco.

Q: And who are Richie and Sally Fusco?

A: Richie Fusco is a captain in the Colombo family. Sally Fusco is a made member of the Colombo family.

Q: Are they related to each other?

A: Yes.

Q: How so?

A: Two brothers. And there's also a son, Sally Fusco, Jr. He's in prison right now. He's also a made member of the Colombo family.
"

(Fusco Jr. was serving time for racketeering. Petey LNU is believed to be Peter Sabatino. Michael Sessa was convicted at trial and sentenced to life.)

1993

On January 7 the FBI submitted a general report on the Family: "Although the majority of the Colombo members continue to be based in the New York metropolitan area, there are numerous 'notable' exceptions...It is noted that the following individuals reside and/or operate in the state of New Jersey: Colombo Family [Redacted; Captain John Pate?] and Colombo Family Soldiers Richard Fusco, Salvatore Fusco, Paul Lombardino, Salvatore Lombardino, [Redacted], Salvatore Profaci, James V. Randazzo and Philip Rossillo."

On May 14 Richard Fusco and ten other members of the Persico faction were indicted by the US Attorney's Office in Brooklyn on Federal racketeering charges resulting from the war.

In June named as a Captain in the FBI's list of 117 identified Colombo Family members.

The following month an FBI report described Richard Fusco, facing a racketeering indictment resulting from the war, as the Family's Consigliere.

Salvatore may have taken over his brother's crew.

In November he was again identified in an FBI list as a Captain.

1994 - 1999

Around 1994 Fusco met with Orena faction members Joel Cacace and Joseph Campanella to discuss ending the conflict. Campanella, who defected in the early 2000s, later testified: "[Cacace and Fusco] asked me if I was interested in getting together and putting the Family together and vote, and my answer to him was, 'No, I'll wait for Bill [Cutolo] to come home from prison'." (Bill Cutolo, one of Orena's strongest supporters, was facing a racketeering trial that ended in acquittal. Campanella was Cutolo's Acting Captain at the time.)

In October 1999 Colombo Acting Boss Alphonse 'Little Allie Boy' Persico, son of the imprisoned Carmine, was indicted on Federal racketeering charges and held without bail.

Salvatore Fusco was placed on a ruling panel and given Associate Reynold Maragni, who acted as intermediary between Fusco, Acting Underboss John 'Jackie' DeRoss and the Family's Florida crew. Maragni later testified: "Sal Fusco at that time was a ruling member on a panel that was overseeing the Colombo Family."

2000

By early-to-mid 2000 Salvatore Fusco had been appointed the Acting Boss.

On February 8 an FBI CI reported that Captain (?) Frank 'Frankie Wheels' Melia was headed to Florida and that an Unsub associated with Melia was planning to meet with Fusco.

R. DeLeo
Gang Land News
Sometime in the Spring Fusco presided over an induction ceremony held at the residence of Colombo Associate Joseph Competiello in West Babylon, Long Island. Others present included Captain Thomas 'Tommy Shots' Gioeli and Soldier Dino Calabro. Ralph DeLeo was the sole member inducted. (Gioeli and then DeLeo served as the Family's Acting Boss after Fusco.)

In early May FBI CI reported: "[Salvatore?] Fusco has also stated [Redacted] is not an Acting Capo as of now. When the [Orena - Persico] factions came together, there was talk at a meeting about [Redacted] being moved to Underboss. This has not happened and there is no talk of this happening soon."

Around this time Fusco met with Associate Reynold Maragni re the latter's status: "[Fusco] came to me and told me I was proposed to be inducted into the crime Family and that it would take between six and eight weeks after my name went on the list to get approved..Subsequently, between my name going out on the list, I got arrested. And Sal Fusco died." (Maragni was indicted June 15 and served time until 2003. In 2008 he was made in a ceremony presided over by Salvatore's brother Richard, then the Family's Acting Underboss.)

Salvatore Fusco died July 8, 2000 and was buried in Calvary Cemetery in Woodside, Queens.

His name was included in the deceased column of a Colombo Family induction list passed to the other Families in late 2003.
