Anthony Abbatemarco (Colombo)

c. 1970
Anthony 'Abbey' Abbatemarco was the Colombo Family Underboss during the early-to-mid 1970s.

In 1977 he was demoted for plotting against the leadership.

Anthony's father Frank 'Frankie Schatz / Shots' Abbatemarco was a Colombo member shot to death on Family orders in 1959.

Frank's brother Michele was an early member murdered in the late 1920s.

In-laws included Colombo Soldier Joseph Magnasco and the Colombo - Bonanno Family Cardellos. (Magnasco and one of the Cardellos, Colombo Soldier Joseph aka 'Joe Bat', were killed during the Gallo war of the early 1960s.)

Anthony was born April 6, 1922 in South Brooklyn to Frank (22y) and Mary Rizzo (17y). Father from Sassano comune of Salerno, Campania.

At the time of Anthony's birth the family resided at 327 2nd St in Park Slope, Brooklyn.

Through the decade they moved a couple blocks north to President St, first at 702 then 721. Frank worked for a trucking business and later as a driver (commercial).

Brooklyn Daily Eagle
On October 6, 1928 Anthony's uncle Michele Abbatemarco was shot to death in the driver's seat of an auto parked outside 2421 83rd St in Gravesend. The gunman, believed to be a passenger, shot Abbatemarco once in the chest and three times in the head with a .32 caliber revolver.

Prior to the murder Michele had been playing cards with his cousins, brothers Anthony and James 'Jimmy Bat / Sham' Cardello. Press reported: "Police took James Cardello, known as 'Sham', one of [Genovese Member Frank] Uale's chief lieutenants, to the Bath Beach station for questioning. He told them he and Mike were friends, and that he had visited him at his home Thursday...They were arranging, Cardello said, to get another friend out of trouble in Manhattan." Early the following year Colombo Member Ralph 'Captain Moon' Sprizza was held for the murder. (James Cardello [1905-1975] was later inducted into the Colombo Family.)

Anthony's father Frank was likely a made member by the early 1930s.

The family had since moved further north to 83 / 144 Garfield Place. Frank listed his occupation as chauffeur for a trucking company.

By the early 1940s Anthony resided at 485 3rd St.

He graduated from St. Francis Prep and, he later told the FBI, had a 'football scholarship lined up' at Villanova University that was put off due to the war.

In September 1942 he enlisted in the US Marine Corps, serving in the Pacific Theatre at Guadalcanal, Bouganville and Guam.

By Spring 1945 he was honorably discharged and back in Brooklyn, where he married Lucille Giordano (22y) in Carroll Gardens, Brooklyn. (Bride's father Stefano from Montemilone comune of Potenza, Basilicata.)

1950s

By the early 1950s associated with the Colombo Family through his father.

On March 24, 1952 the Abbatemarcos were picked up with several others on a gambling (policy) charge in Brooklyn. Those arrested included Colombo Soldier Frank Abbatemarco, Possible Colombo Member Carmine 'Junior' Persico and Associates Anthony Abbatemarco, Joseph Gallo, Lawrence 'Larry' Gallo and Charles Brown.

Larry Gallo is believed to have served as godfather to Abbatemarco's son.

An article in the Brooklyn Daily Eagle described Anthony, residing at 527 2nd St, as 'No. 2 man of the ring' under his father.

On  June 24 he pleaded guilty to a lottery conspiracy charge and began serving a nine month sentence at Rikers Island the following month.

By the mid-1950s Frank Abbatemarco sponsored his son for membership into the Colombo Family.

The ceremony occurred around Easter of 1956 (1957?) and was likely presided over by Boss Joseph Profaci.

All three inductees would play a part in the Gallo war five years later.

At the time of the ceremony the Family Boss was Joseph Profaci, who succeeded Salvatore DiBella around 1931. Joseph Magliocco and Joseph 'Peppino' Buffa served as Underboss and Consigliere respectively.

An October 1956 consorting charge against Anthony was dismissed the following month.

Another gambling / consorting charge in February 1959 was dismissed.

F. Abbatemarco
New York Daily News
On November 4, 1959 Frank Abbatemarco was fatally shot by two gunmen inside Cardello's Tavern at 256 4th Ave in Park Slope.

Future Boss Joseph Colombo, a member of Salvatore Musacchio's crew at the time, was identified by one or more FBI sources as a shooter. Another individual, redacted, was named as the second shooter, with two unknowns as accomplices. Other sources claim the job was carried out by the Gallo brothers.

On November 6, 1959 FBI CI reported: "[CI] contacted re the murder of Frank Abbatemarco, in view of the fact that he is very close to this particular individual. He stated that in order to understand this particular situation, it would be necessary to go back several months. Frank Abbatemarco is primarily a gambler, however, he is not a bookmaker and had not been a bookmaker for many years. Further, he is so broke his wife has to work. He has a son, [redacted section]."

On Christmas Eve Anthony voluntarily appeared for questioning at the Bergen Street station house and was quoted in the following day's New York Daily News: "I have been staying with relatives on Long Island. I want to spend the holiday with my family, and I do not want to be bugged by you guys while I am there. I did not see my father killed. Yes, I was in the neighborhood. I heard the commotion and thought maybe there had been a stickup, and I mingled with the crowd and I decided to go elsewhere when I learned that pop had been shot. I do not know who did it." He was asked if police protection was needed and replied: "That is what I want least of. I want to be alone with my family."

1960s

In late February 1961 Harry Fontana and other high-ranking Colombo members were kidnapped by the rebel Gallo faction. The group was released unharmed but the incident ultimately led to a shooting war that left several members and associates dead.

Abbatemarco and several other made members in the Family's South Brooklyn faction joined with the Gallos.

In April-June 1961 arrested for consorting in Brooklyn.

On August 10, 1961 interviewed by FBI: "[Abbatemarco] was questioned regarding what he did for a living and he stated he was a professional gambler and made his living in this manner."

By the middle of August 1961 Boss Joseph Profaci ordered several murders in response to the February kidnappings and other transgressions.

Co-conspirators in the initial plotting included Colombo Captain Salvatore 'Sally the Sheik' Musacchio, Captain John 'Johnny Bath Beach' Oddo and Soldier Dominick 'Mimi' Scialo.

On August 20 Colombo Soldier Lawrence Gallo was called to a meeting at the Sahara Restaurant in Flatbush and nearly garrotted by Colombo Soldier Salvatore D'Ambrosio. Others on scene included Colombo Soldiers Carmine 'Junior' Persico and John 'Johnny Green' Scimone as well as establishment owner Charles Clemenza. The attempt was interrupted when NYPD Sergeant Edward Meagher entered the restaurant. As the perpetrators fled D'Ambrosio opened fire at Meagher and Patrolman Melvin Blei, wounding the latter in the face. The group was driven from the scene by Colombo Soldier Aurelius Cirillo. (Charles Clemenza's brother James 'Jimmy Brown' Clemenza reported to co-conspirator John Oddo.)

New York Daily News
Abbatemarco held (Aug. 22)
Because of his physical resemblance to D'Ambrosio, Abbatemarco was picked up August 22 and charged with attempted murder. Two days later the case was dismissed.
The same day FBI CI reported: “[According] to Carmine Persico, Harry Fontana is in the process of retiring and Persico was taking over (Fontana’s old position). He stated that Persico has the area from Court Street to Prospect Park between Sackett and 3rd Street. He related that Persico has seven ‘button men’ working under him in the above area. He identified these buttons as [Abbatemarco, Joseph Magnasco and redacted names].

L. Lampasi
New York Daily News
On August 25, 1961 FBI CI reported: “[CI] queried regarding his knowledge of the Joe Gallo incident. He stated that in his experience, he doubts very much if Anthony Abbatemarco had anything to do with instant attempt on Larry Gallo’s life. He stated it does not make very good sense in view of the fact subsequent to the incident, Anthony Abbatemarco’s closest associate was arrested with the Gallos in a raid by the NYPD on President Street. He stated this individual is known to him as Larry. He stated if Abbatemarco had anything to do with this incident concerning the attempt on Larry Gallo’s life, it was very doubtful Larry would be frequenting with the Gallos.” ['Larry' could be referring to Colombo Soldier Lawrence Lampasi Jr., picked up with the Gallos for consorting on August 25.]

J. Magnasco
New York Daily News
On October 4, 1961 Abbatemarco's Captain Harry Fontana was target of another kidnapping, this time outside the College Restaurant at 224 4th Ave in Gowanus, Brooklyn. Gallo crew member Joseph Magnasco, Abbatemarco's in-law and a former Soldier under Fontana, was shot to death during the attempt by Harry's brother Salvatore.

One week later Abbatemarco and twelve others were arrested in NYPD raids following indictment by the Brooklyn District Attorney's Office. Those arrested were Colombo Soldiers Anthony Abbatemarco, John Cutrone, Leonard Dello, Joseph Gallo, Lawrence Gallo, Vincent 'Vinny Sicilian' Gugliaro and Colombo Associates Joseph 'Junior Lollipop' Carna, Lawrence 'Big Lollipop' Carna, Salvatore 'Sally Boy' Mangiameli, Vincent Regina and Alfonso 'Peanuts' Serrantonio. Two loaded rifles, one shotgun and one carbine were seized. The defendants were held on $25,000 bail each pending a Grand Jury investigation. (Joseph Carna and Alfonso Serrantonio were inducted into the Colombo Family in the late 1970s.)

J. Gallo
FBN Mafia Book
On November 13, 1961 FBI CI and Colombo Soldier Gregory Scarpa reported: “In explaining why they used a rope in an effort to strangle Larry Gallo, [Scarpa] stated there were several men that had to go and with the heat being put on NYC by the Attorney General, it was not felt it would be a good idea to gun them down and leave bodies lying all over the streets of Brooklyn. He stated the plan was to just have them disappear and never be seen again. He stated it was thought this would be logical inasmuch as they were all out on bail and it would be felt by the authorities that they were jumping bail. [Scarpa] stated on Sunday when the attempt was made on Larry Gallo, three of the men in the Sahara Lounge at that time were to disappear and indicated the other two in addition to Larry Gallo were Johnny Scimini and Anthony Abbatemarco. He related if the plans had worked and these three had been successfully taken care of, a call would have been made to Joe Gallo. Gallo would have been told to come down for a pow-wow, his brother was there, and Joe Gallo would have been disposed of when he came in.

On November 15 and December 14, 1961 arrested by the NYPD's 84th Squad in Brooklyn for consorting. On January 25, 1962 both cases ended in acquittal.

L. Lampasi (1963)
On December 20, 1961 CI Scarpa reported that Boss Joseph Profaci had ordered a halt to the violence so that a peace could be negotiated. Colombo Soldier Lorenzo Lampasi, according to Scarpa and other sources, was one of the primary mediators acting on behalf of the Gallo faction.

C. LoCicero
Four days later Colombo Member Calogero 'Charlie Sidge' LoCicero and an Unsub were surveilled by the NYPD entering 76 President St in Brooklyn's Columbia Street Waterfront District. The pair was joined by Abbatemarco and Lawrence Gallo. The NYPD advised FBI: "It is to be noted, however, subsequent information received indicates that Larry Gallo absolutely refuses to make any type of peace until Carmine Persico, Jr. and Salvatore D'Ambrosio are delivered to President Street or at least have been killed. It is further noted [CI] previously furnished information that LoCicero, aka, Charlie the Sidge, is a [Consigliere?] for the Profaci Family."

Gallos after fire. L to R: Anthony Abbatemarco, Albert Gallo and Frank Illiano
Press
On January 23 Abbatemarco and other members of the Gallo crew rescued a group of children from an apartment fire in Red Hook. Participants were Colombo Soldiers Anthony Abbatemarco, Leonard Dello and Lawrence Gallo as well as Associates John Commarato, Albert 'Kid Blast' Gallo (Larry's younger brother), Frank 'Punchy' Illiano and Alfonso Serrantonio. The New York Times reported: "The seven men had just left a nearby restaurant when they saw smoke pouring from the apartment, which is occupied by Mrs. Sista Biaz and her six children, whose ages range from 10 months to 6 years...The seven men rushed into the apartment and smothered the fire with their jackets." (Illiano and Albert Gallo were inducted into the Genovese Family after the books were opened in the late 1970s.)

On February 8 FBI reported: "[CI] was told by Lawrence Gallo in a discussion of peace that it was contemplated there could be a combined Gallo-Profaci group run by Lawrence Gallo and Anthony Abbatemarco of the Gallo group and Nicholas Forlano and one other Profaci associate. According to [CI], the Gallos want [Carmine Persico], a Profaci associate killed, as he was the 'serpent' who started the feud for Profaci. Forlano reportedly told Lawrence Gallo that [Persico] would not be killed but if the feud settled, the matter would be up to the 'Commission'."

On March 28 Abbatemarco and his uncle, Colombo Soldier James Cardello, were arrested for consorting by the NYPD's 11th Division in Brooklyn. Case dismissed April 4.

On May 4 FBI CI reported: "...[CI] said further that Larry [Gallo]'s representatives have been meeting regularly with representatives of Joseph Profaci. These meetings seem to occur every four or five days. [CI] termed these meetings as 'progress reports', as apparently they have not as yet resulted in any conclusion of the Profaci - Gallo feud. [CI] added that Larry Gallo is represented at these meetings by 'Old Man Lorenzo' (Lorenzo Lampasi), Abbatemarco, 'Jimmy the Bat' (James Cardello), and [Redacted]. Also by 'The Blast' (Albert Gallo, Jr). Joseph Profaci is represented in these meetings by Charlie the Sidge (LoCicero). [CI] said that 'Old Man Lorenzo' sees Larry Gallo twice a day usually and Lampasi's son (Larry Lampasi) also sees Larry. [CI] said the younger Lampasi gave Larry Gallo a car recently."

On June 8 FBI CI reported: "[CI] had learned that Anthony Abbatemarco was operating a crap game for Lawrence Gallo in a social club on Carroll Street, between 4th and 5th Avenues, Brooklyn. [Game] was being run on Sunday afternoons and on Monday and Tuesday of each week." FBI noted: "[Same date info] furnished to [NYPD and location raided 6/17/62], but there was no game in operation. [CI] subsequently advised he had determined Abbatemarco was still operating this crap game, but it was now being operated as a 'floating crap game' with the location being moved on a daily basis."

M. Miranda
FBN Mafia Book
On June 27 FBI CI reported: “[CI] recontacted concerning the meeting which had been held at the Kettle of Fish Restaurant and Bar located at 114 MacDougal St on [redacted]. [CI] advised, as previously reported, that Mike Miranda presided at the meeting with Thomas Eboli, Pete DeFeo, Mike Genovese and one of the Gallo brothers sitting at a table in the rear of the restaurant...When questioned concerning the 64 Profaci men who were to be split between Pete DeFeo and Gallo, [CI] stated Miranda had said, ’64 captains and runners belonging to Profaci of which 32 would be under Pete DeFeo and 32 under Gallo'. CI described the Gallo brother present as the one who drinks milk. It is noted that Larry Gallo has been interviewed on two previous occasions by Bureau Agents at which time he was observed drinking his favorite beverage, a shot of scotch whiskey and a glass of milk. [CI] also identified a photograph of Anthony Abbatemarco as a companion of Larry Gallo at the Kettle of Fish meeting.

On August 2 FBI CI reported: "[Abbatemarco] and [Redacted] are presently in command of the Gallo gang on President Street; however, Albert Gallo, because he is a brother, also wields considerable influence...[CI] added also Abbatemarco's mother bought five shotguns at a department store where she is employed during the previous week. One night she brought three and another night two. [CI] believed the store is either Martin's or Abraham and Strauss in Brooklyn."

Within a couple of months Abbatemarco and Gallo had fallen out.

On October 1 CI Scarpa reported: "[Abbatemarco], according to what he hears, has broken with Larry Gallo and is now operating on his own. He stated it is his understanding Abbatemarco has about 15 or 20 men with him. Scarpa related he believes Larry Gallo only has about 6 or 7 men left with him."

Associates with Abbatemarco at the time included John Commarato and brothers Anthony 'Fat Tony' and Vincent Regina.

On November 7 Abbatemarco and Soldier Leonard Dello were observed by the FBI driving in Brooklyn.

The same date Abbatemarco was interviewed by Agents: "During the course of this interview, Abbatemarco stated that he no longer associated with Lawrence Gallo. He stated he had broken away from Gallo because Gallo was not making any money. He stated he had people to support and he could not do this as long as he remained associated with Lawrence Gallo. He stated 'with him' he had James Cardello, Leonard Dello, Anthony Regina, Vincent Regina and John Commarato."

'Outlaw' group leaders (L to R): Abbatemarco, Forlano, Gallo, Waffa
On December 21 FBI CI reported: "[The] following groups are classified as outlaw groups in Brooklyn: 1. Anthony Abbatemarco's group 2. Gallo brothers 3. Nicholas Forlano and Carmine Persico 4. Ali Waffa's group. CI stated Waffa is a Syrian, and he is referred to as Ali Baba. [CI] stated [Acting Boss] Joseph Magliocco will have all of the Gallo group killed one by one. He says this is a sure thing. He stated they would have already been killed, but things have been too hot."

1963

On January 15 identified by FBI CI as Colombo member.

On January 23 surveilled entering vehicle driven by Colombo Associate Albert Pizzo. [Family of Albert Pizzo (1930-1988) was from Bagheria.]

On February 14 identified by FBI CI as head of a group that included his uncle, Colombo Soldier Joseph Cardello. CI noted: "[When] the trouble between the Profacis and Gallos began to subside, those individuals who had broken with Joseph Profaci and went with the Gallos and then subsequently broke with the Gallos were given their choice as to the Family they would prefer to be in until their status was settled. The above individuals chose to be under the Commission within the Magliocco Family."

On February 12-13-18 CI Scarpa gave an update of the Family's structure: "...In addition to the above, [Scarpa] advised that the following were all members of the old Profaci Family who went with Larry and Joe Gallo when they rebelled. He stated all of the following have returned, but to his knowledge are temporarily assigned to the Carlo Gambino Family and operate under Nicholas Forlano. He stated the big majority of the following were assigned to the regime of Harry Fontana before they joined the Gallo insurrection: Anthony Abbatemarco, James Cardello, Joseph Cardello, Larry Cirillo, Vincent Gugliaro, Joseph Yacovelli, James Scianna, Anthony Scianna, Salvatore D'Ambrosio, FNU [Alphonse] D’Ambrosio (brother of above), George Tropiano, Anthony Ricciardi aka Tony Long."

On February 25 among 4 arrested for consorting by NYPD 78th Precinct in Brooklyn. Those charged were Colombo Soldiers Anthony Abbatemarco and Carmine Persico as well as Associates Hugh 'Apples' McIntosh and Vincent Regina. Case dismissed.

On May 28 FBI CI reported: "[There] has been no talk on the street about Anthony Abbatemarco, and he had no idea what he might be doing these days."

J. Cardello
On August 9 Colombo Soldier Joseph Cardello, another of Abbatemarco's uncles, was killed by members of the Gallo crew. Five shots were fired into Cardello's vehicle at a stoplight in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn.
J. Battista (L) and A. Regina
Hours later Gallo associate Louis 'Cadillac Lou' Mariani was shot to death along Route 80 in Suffolk County, Long Island. Abbatemarco's associate Anthony Regina and longshoreman John 'Moose' Battista were convicted.
N. Bianco
On September 30 New England Boss Raymond Patriarca was visited by Soldier Nicholas Bianco at his company in Providence, Rhode Island. Bianco was acting as an intermediary for the Gallo faction at the time, and an FBI bug overheard the pair discussing the difficulty of bringing the war to a close. Bianco recorded stating: "There's other guys there, Raymond, that they get [personal], in other words, this guy here can't never move across the street because if there's a guy, as soon as they see each other they gonna kill one another back and forth like that. One guy can't live on account of the kid Junior [Carmine Persico], the other guy can't live on account of, maybe Abbie (ph) [Abbatemarco]."

He stated that Larry Gallo arrived at the reception late and was accompanied by John Cutrone. [Scarpa] pointed out that on arrival Larry greeted everyone present, but omitted making any greeting to Carmine Persico Jr. [Scarpa] stated this omission on the part of Gallo was very obvious to him and he is still of the opinion although on the surface everything is peaceful between the two groups there is still bad blood between Gallo and Persico." An alternate version of the report added: "[Scarpa] pointed out that actions such as this on the part of Gallo are completely contrary to all of the rules of the organization and he actually believes there could be a considerable amount of trouble between the two in the future."

On May 19 CI Scarpa noted Abbatemarco's absence from the May 15-16 wedding reception for Colombo Captain Frank Fusco's daughter.

1966

On February 23 FBI CI reported: "[Abbatemarco] is still very closely connected with Carmine Persico in bookmaking operations. He stated Abbatemarco needs Persico because he (Abbey Abbatemarco) handles small bets, laying off the large bets with Persico...[Abbey] is practically broke, as he even had his car repossessed for non payment [and] for the past few months, has been very nervous and pale-looking.

On April 15 FBI CI reported: "[Abbatemarco] is a 'button man' in the Carlo Gambino [sic] Family and he believes Carmine Persico is his 'captain'."

On April 18 FBI CI reported: “[He] has known Abbatemarco through the years as ‘Abbie’, who was a ‘button’ under Harry Fontana, but who had lately aligned himself with the Gallos in their struggle with the Profacis. [CI] stated ‘Abbie’ is presently acting as a bookmaker in the vicinity of 5th Avenue and Second Street, Brooklyn.

On August 2 FBI CI reported: "[Abbatemarco] is the son of Frank Abbatemarco, aka Frankie Shots, and Frank was an LCN member under Joseph Profaci. [CI] said a number of years ago, Frank Abbatemarco owed Profaci a large sum of money, possibly as much as 20 or 30 thousand dollars and Profaci told Charles LoCicero to have Abbatemarco repay this loan. LoCicero, thereafter, called in Frank Abbatemarco and gave him a date by which the loan was to be repaid. At the end of this time, Abbatemarco had apparently made no effort to make repayment and the Gallos supposedly killed Abbatemarco. [CI] said, however, Anthony Abbatemarco is apparently aware of the above, but continued to be a loyal LCN member associated with the Gallos."

In September Captain Carmine Persico gained ownership of the Market Place Restaurant in Manhattan. On the 20th a party was held attended by Captain Joseph Yacovelli, Soldiers Anthony Abbatemarco, James Cardello, Aniello Giannattasio, Anthony Ricciardi and CI Gregory Scarpa among others. (Scarpa may have been the informant who reported on the party two days later.)

1967

On January 12 FBI CI reported: "[He] is familiar with Anthony Abbatemarco, whose father, Frankie Shots, was murdered a few years ago in Brooklyn. [CI] said Abbatemarco recently purchased Arthur's Bar located on Eastern Parkway, Brooklyn which was previously known as the Park East. CI said Abbatemarco is related in some way to [Redacted] and [Redacted]."

On February 6 FBI CI reported: "[Abbatemarco] is reportedly operating Arthur's Bar on Eastern Parkway near Nostrand Avenue, Brooklyn. [CI] heard this individual is reportedly in disfavor with fellow members and 'bosses' in the Colombo Family and is reportedly on 'probation' with the Colombo Family. [CI] was unable to provide any additional information concerning the situation, but stated he had heard this from a good source."

On July 19 arrested by NYPD 71st Pct Brooklyn on Family Court warrant.

1968

On July 2 CI reported: "[Among] some of the individuals whom he has met in his numbers operation through his knowledge [redacted] and other individuals, the following are individuals he believes are made individuals in the Organized Crime field...[CI] considers both Anthony Abbatemarco to be a 'made' individual as well as his right-hand man [Redacted]."

In September included in the FBI's list of 83 identified Colombo Family members.

On December 12 identified by FBI CI as Colombo Soldier.

1969
J. DiCarlo (L) and S. Pieri
FBN Mafia Book
On January 23 Buffalo Members Joseph DiCarlo and Salvatore 'Sam' Pieri flew to New York. The NYPD's Intelligence Squad, alerted beforehand by Albany PD, surveilled the pair for the duration of their stay. That night DiCarlo and Pieri were followed to Ponte's Steak House in Manhattan. At 10:54 PM Persico and Abbatemarco arrived at the restaurant driving a van registered to Allied Rentals in Jersey City and left around 1:15 AM. At 2:09 AM they were spotted joining Joseph DiCarlo and three Unsubs at the Copacabana Night Club. The pair left around 3:55 AM after a short conversation outside with Associate Hugh McIntosh.

Guests from other Families include Gambino Boss Carlo Gambino, Gambino Captain Vincent 'Jimmy the Blond' Corrao, Lucchese Captain (?) John 'Johnny Dio' DioGuardi, Genovese Acting Captain Joseph Schipani and Gambino Soldier Pasquale 'Patsy' Crapanzano.

In November included in the FBI's list of 79 identified Colombo Family members.

By December resided at 9021 Shore Rd in Fort Hamilton, Brooklyn.

1970

On February 10 CI Scarpa reported: "[Abbatemarco's] main income is derived from a good numbers operation in downtown Brooklyn and most of his customers were Negroes. He heard of no difficulties Abbatemarco might be having from Negroes attempting to ‘take over’.

On April 20 FBI CI reported: “[Abbatemarco] is the cousin of James Cardello and they see each other occasionally.

On July 18 CI Scarpa reported: "...[Scarpa] noted Anthony Abbatemarco never attended the [Italian-American Civil Rights League (IACRL)] picketing at the [FBI's] New York Office but he heard Abbatemarco was still active in 'policy' in downtown Brooklyn."

1971 - Second Gallo Conflict

On April 7 FBI CI reported: "[Abbatemarco] has a numbers operation in the Bedford-Stuyvesant area of Brooklyn."

On May 4 an informant reported that Abbatemarco had four places of residence, including an apartment at Flatbush Terrace and 'a big house with a pool' located in Upstate New York near the home of a redacted associate (possibly Philip 'Gatto' Garofolo).

By Summer 1971 hostilities again broke out with the Gallo faction, now headed by the recently released from prison Joseph Gallo (brother Lawrence died in 1968).

On June 8 FBI CI reported: "[The] Gallo brothers have again gathered their crew of gunmen together and are on President Street daily. At night they often visit a bar called 'My Place' Avenue P and McDonald Avenue, Brooklyn. Joe Gallo seems determined to start trouble with Joe Colombo according to what [CI] heard one Andrew 'Andy' Amato say. Amato (who has always been close to Anthony Abbatemarco) said Gallo plans to 'take back what was always his' and is also disrupting Colombo's [IACRL] plans." (Andrew John 'Andy' Amato [1924-1995] resided in Sheepshead Bay, Brooklyn and served Federal time around the late 1970s - early 1980s.)

On June 18 FBI CI reported: "Concerning the following persons - [CI] states Joe Gallo has expressed these feelings: Vincent Gugliaro - a loyal Gallo mob member during the Gallo-Profaci wars; Anthony Abbatemarco - who was apparently switching sides from pro-Gallo to anti-Gallo during the Gallo-Profaci wars...Joe Gallo states both of these above individuals are no good as they deserted his brother, Larry, and are Colombo people now."

On June 21 FBI CI reported: "[CI] understand Abbey's gambling operation is currently largely in the hands of [Redacted] who has been with Abbey for years. Abbey is not getting involved too much as he knows gambling is now under Federal jurisdiction."

On June 28 Boss Joseph Colombo was shot and seriously wounded during the IACRL's Unity Day Rally in Manhattan. (He remained disabled until his death in 1978.)

Around July 29 Abbatemarco was interviewed by the FBI: "[He] was interviewed at length [and] conversed freely but in only vague terms in matters relating to La Cosa Nostra activities."

L. Dello
On July 12 FBI CI reported: "[Leonard] Dello is out of jail and operating a numbers operation with his cousin 'Abbey' Abbatemarco, [redacted]."

1972 - Gallo Murder + Promotion to Underboss

In January Abbatemarco's Captain Carmine Persico began serving a Federal sentence for hijacking.

Colombo Soldier Joseph Gallo's murder on April 7 kicked off a fresh round of violence.

Sometime around the middle of April Carmine's brother Alphonse Persico was inducted into the Bufalino Family, then transferred back to the Colombos and made an Acting Captain to look after his imprisoned brother's interests.

By July Abbatemarco resided at 1126 83rd St in Dyker Heights, Brooklyn.

On July 10 FBI CI reported: "...Although having been in the area of the [IACRL] Chapter on 5th Avenue [illegible] and Nestor Social Club in the same block, PC has not seen 'Allie Boy' Persico, Jerry Langella, Abbey Abbatemarco or any of the crew that normally frequents the area. PC feels they are staying off the street because of the trouble with the Gallo faction."

On August 11 a Gallo gunman mistakenly killed three civilians inside the Neapolitan Noodle Restaurant in Manhattan's Upper East Side.

On August 21 FBI CI reported: "[He] learned Anthony Abbatemarco had left home on approximately 8/11 or 8/12/72, shortly after the Neapolitan Noodle Restaurant NYC shooting and Abbatemarco had not returned home since."

On October 3 vehicle registered to Colombo Soldier Leonard Dello surveilled outside the Abbatemarco residence in Dyker Heights.

G. Langella
On October 24, at 8:23 PM, Abbatemarco was observed by the NYPD entering Colombo Associate Gennaro Langella's residence in Bath Beach, Brooklyn. The pair then drove to Monte's Venetian Room at 451 Carroll St in Gowanus.

In October 1972 included in the FBI's list of 72 identified Colombo Family members.

On November 6 FBI CI reported: "[CI] advised that [redacted] Dunbarton Oaks Tavern, 37th Road, Queens, and there is a lot of gambling and shylocking going on right over the bar especially on weekends. The main controllers of the Dunbarton Oaks are 'Jiggs' Forlano and Nicky Bianco (Capos in the Joseph Colombo LCN Family). [All] of the gambling and shylocking that goes on is done by [Redacted] and Tony Shots. Previous investigation reflects that Anthony Abbatemarco, a member of the Colombo LCN Family, is frequently referred to as Tony Shots and, therefore, it is possible he is identical to above-mentioned Tony Shots." ('Tony Shots' may also be referring to Forlano crew associate 'Petey Shots' Cutraro.)

On November 9 FBI CI reported: "Jerry Langella and Alley Boy Persico still frequent the 5th Avenue area and are not making any effort to hide from anyone. Langella, Persico and Abbey Abbatemarco were recently seen in this area attending the funeral of the daughter of [Genovese Soldier] 'Tattles' Ralph Polizio. PC understands Abbatemarco is broke. He is claiming he made 'bad investments'. Abbatemarco, according to PC, would not be inclined to act in any leadership capacity with regard to the Persico crew, but would prefer to operate only on individual basis. PC also understands Abbatemarco was recently subpoenaed by the District Attorney's office regarding the Joe Gallo shooting. His appearance was postponed indefinitely."

T. DiBella (1970s)
In mid-to-late December 1972 Thomas DiBella was elected official Boss of the Colombo Family. He appointed Anthony Abbatemarco as his Underboss.

On December 22 FBI CI reported: "[CI] advised [redacted] that Alphonse Persico, Capo, Colombo Family, 'went out of town' and met with Joseph Yacovelli and Carmine DiBiase, both Bureau fugitives. Upon Persico's return, he told some close associates in the Family that Thomas DiBella was made the new Boss and Anthony 'Abbey' Abbatemarco was made Underboss. [CI] was assured Carmine Persico, incarcerated Capo, and Joe Yacovelli are still in charge of the Family and DiBella was just a 'figurehead'. [CI] said he also learned that Charles 'Moose' Panarella was now a Captain. [CI] attempting to learn further details and Bureau will be kept advise."

On December 27 Abbatemarco, Colombo Associate Gennaro Langella and Unsub observed by NYPD in the vicinity of 53 Chambers St in Little Italy.

On December 30, at 8:35 PM, Abbatemarco observed by NYPD leaving Langella's residence.

1973

S. Albanese (1972)
Around early 1973 Colombo Associate Salvatore Albanese was put direct with Abbatemarco to serve as his driver and bodyguard. The two became close and were frequently observed together through Abbatemarco's tenure as Underboss.

On January 2 FBI CI reported: "[Abbey's mother] is believed to be still alive and living in luxury, at an unknown address, in an apartment on Park Avenue, NYC. This mother has or had much of the Abbatemarco money in her control and she is much respected by Anthony and [Redacted]. Anthony, who is a member of the Colombo Family of LCN [redacted]. PC received the above information from a friend of PC's who is usually reliable. PC however has no personal knowledge of Anthony Abbatemarco."

Abbatemarco's increase in stature led to intensified LE surveillance.

On January 8 Abbatemarco and Captain (Consigliere?) Alphonse Persico surveilled by FBI: "[Both] very well dressed, walking into locations in the area of 15th Street and Neptune Avenue, Coney Island section of Brooklyn, apparently looking for [Colombo Soldier Dominick Scialo]."

On January 16 FBI surveillance conducted on unspecified residence in Brooklyn. Those observed included Abbatemarco, Colombo Soldier Nicholas Bianco and Colombo Associate Philip 'Chubby' Rossillo. (Rossillo is believed to be the individual who shot and killed Joseph Colombo's assailant at the 1971 Unity Day Rally.)

A. Persico (1970s)
On January 18 CI reported that Alphonse Persico had been made Consigliere, rounding out the Family's post-Colombo administration.

On January 30 FBI CI (Greg Scarpa?) reported: "[Some time] on 1/29/73, Thomas DiBella, the new Boss of the Joseph Colombo Family, had been rushed to the Staten Island Memorial Hospital, Staten Island, suffering from a cardiac condition. [CI] further advised that was probably the reason Anthony Abbatemarco, the new Underboss, was observed on 1/30/73 at that hospital."

On February 26, at 3:15 PM, FBI spot check conducted on Diplomat Lounge located at 3rd Avenue and Carroll Street in Gowanus. Those observed included Abbatemarco, Consigliere Alphonse Persico, Associates Gennaro Langella and Andrew 'Andy Mush' Russo as well as Salvatore Persico.

On February 27 FBI CI reported: “[Abbey] claims for tax purposes that he makes his living as a card player. Abbatemarco is a very good friend of Alphonse Persico and the two quite often ‘knock around’ together. Abbey also knows Tutti Lombardino relatively well as he was a good friend of Lombardino's father. PC further stated Abbatemarco is closer to 'Allie Boy' than he is to [Redacted] and is the godfather of [Redacted] daughter, [Redacted].” (Tutti Lombardino refers to New Jersey-based Colombo Captain Salvatore Lombardino Jr. [1931-2009]. His deceased father Salvatore [1891-1967] was a Jersey Captain under Profaci.)

On March 3 Abbatemarco, Captain Charles 'Charlie Moose' Panarella, Soldier Anthony 'Tony Lap' LaPonzina and Unsubs observed by NYPD meeting in Hoffbrau's Restaurant at 9406 4th Ave in Bay Ridge.

March 8 Abbatemarco and Colombo Associate Anthony 'Scappi' Scarpati were surveilled at Alphonse Persico's residence in Bath Beach.

On March 20 Agents observed Abbatemarco drive Boss Thomas DiBella to the residence of Colombo Soldier Joseph Peraino in Bensonhurst. A vehicle registered to Captain Nicholas Forlano was also observed.

On March 20 FBI CI reported: "[Abbey] Abbatemarco and Tommy DiBella have recently been made bosses in the Colombo Family. [He] can't understand a guy like Abbey being made boss, because he drinks and takes tranquilizers continuously and at the same time."

March 8 Abbatemarco was observed at Alphonse Persico's residence.

On April 4 FBI CI reported: "[CI] advised that [redacted] was informed Abbey Abbatemarco has been named the new Underboss of the Colombo Family of LCN."

On April 16, beginning about 2:00 PM, FBI Agents conducted surveillance on a social club at 7716 78th St in Dyker Heights. Those observed at or in the vicinity of the club over the next two hours included Underboss Anthony Abbatemarco, Captain Charles Panarella, Acting Captain Aniello Giannattasio, Associates Salvatore Albanese, Michael Bolino, Anthony Colombo, Joseph Colombo Jr., Philip 'Fat Philly' DioGuardi, Theodore Persico, Philip Rossillo, Andrew Russo, Anthony Scarpati, Thomas Spero, Caesar Vitale and Possible Associate Anthony Inciarrano. Colombo Soldier (Captain?) Dominick Scialo was spotted driving past the club in a vehicle registered to one Frank Ruggiero.

J. Napoli
On May 3 Abbatemarco and Associate Salvatore Albanese were observed meeting with Genovese Associate James 'Jimmy Napp' Napoli and his son James Jr. inside the Highway Lounge at 362 Metropolitan Ave in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. On May 23 FBI CI reported: "[CI] stated [redacted] 'Abbey', Mickey, a Jewish guy, bald, 44y-45y and Sonny go to [redacted]. Mickey and Sonny are very close to Abbey and are active in Abbey's numbers operation. [CI] stated Abbey to his knowledge only handles numbers and no bookmaking."

On June 12 Agents observed Thomas DiBella conversing with Abbatemarco outside the latter's residence. DiBella returned home in a vehicle driven by Colombo Associate Thomas Venetucci. (Venetucci [1910-1991], believed from Mainland Italy, was a former longshoreman present at various meetings during DiBella's tenure as Boss but not otherwise mentioned in available records. It's possible he was one of the Family's sleeper members.)

On June 13 FBI CI reported: "[Mickey (LNU)] is an old-time bookmaker and numbers man in Abbatemarco's gambling operation."

M. Romanelli
On June 14 Abbatemarco, Genovese Soldier Michael Romanelli and Unsub were observed departing the Highway Lounge in Williamsburg. (Michael Romanelli [1910-1989), at the time a member of Genovese Captain Thomas Lombardi's crew, may have been related to Abbatemarco / the Cardellos.)

On June 20 FBI CI reported: "[Philip] Garofolo, aka 'Gatto' no longer resides on Carroll Street in Brooklyn, but lives in Rockland County [somewhere] in the vicinity of Abbey Abbatemarco's home on Mohegan Lake. 'Gatto' and Abbey are long time friends, and [CI] feels 'business' associates. [CI] understands 'Gatto' is some way involved in Abbey's numbers operation and [redacted]."

On June 22 FBI CI reported: "[Abbey] really does not have much power and he and DiBella are Underboss and Boss because Carmine Persico knows they will do anything he tells them to."

On June 28 Abbatemarco submitted to a lengthy interview with Agents:
"

Abbatemarco advised that he is not involved in any way at all with the [IACRL] and when they started picketing the FBI Office in New York City, he knew they were destined for failure. Abbatemarco admitted he made one appearance during the demonstration, but he only did it because of the original idea of the league to help Italian people. Abbatemarco advised he knows many of the people involved and knew them for years because he has spent his entire life in Brooklyn, with the exception of the time he spent in the US Marine Corps during WWII. Abbatemarco advised he was honorably discharged and in fact receives disability from the Government as a result of his service in the Marine Corps. Abbatemarco advised he graduated St. Francis Prep in Brooklyn and, in fact, had a football scholarship lined up at Villanova, but because of military service, he never attended college. Abbatemarco advised he joined the Marine Corps after high school and was very proud of his military record.

Abbatemarco advised he has [family] now and all he wants to do is be left alone to provide for them and live a peaceful life in Brooklyn. Abbatemarco stated that he has no beef with the Gallos and in fact he thought very much of Larry Gallo, but also felt Al 'Blast' Gallo was a very fine guy. Abbatemarco advised he felt different toward Joey Gallo because he was wild and impossible to talk to, while Larry was much more calmer and reasonable.

Abbatemarco stated that he always felt gambling was not as bad as everyone says and as long as people want to gamble, someone has to provide the service. Abbatemarco stated if he were doing something wrong and got caught it would be too bad because then he would not be able to take care of his [family]. Abbatemarco stated all he asked for was if caught, it be done right, and he is not framed. This he stated is very bad, and he felt it does happen and cited he always felt Sonny Franzese had not been given a fair shake and could not believe Sonny would deal with junkies and get involved in bank robberies.

Abbatemarco stated he would always be available to talk to FBI agents and his attitude had always been to be courteous and friendly towards LE agencies, but he felt the FBI should be more interested in the Black Panthers and militant groups, rather than bothering hard working people. Abbatemarco stated maybe some time in the future the FBI may look for help from his type of people.

"

(Photographs were taken of this meeting but have since been lost.)

On February 6 CI Scarpa reported: “[Sally] Albanese is definitely not acting or sitting in for Allie Boy Persico but has been assigned to Abbey Abbatemarco since Abbey is now the Underboss and should have somebody to do his bidding as [Scarpa] characterized. [Scarpa] stated the Family will not be taken over or broken up into other Families but with the Persicos facing possible undetermined jail sentences, DiBella and Abbatemarco under the wing of Carlo Gambino and Funzie Tieri see this as an opportunity to firmly seize control of the Family and keep it together...[Scarpa] is of the opinion that DiBella and Abbatemarco want to consolidate the Family, will probably put more old timers in positions of authority, but they do not want there to be any ‘challengers’ such as Mimi [Scialo] or Allie Boy around.” (Persico was under indictment for extortion and weapons charges.)

On February 7 CI Scarpa reported: "[Abbatemarco] currently is engaged in overseeing a large numbers and sports gambling business which he owns and has operated for approximately fifteen years. Abbatemarco's gambling operation utilizes in excess of eight controllers and is involved primarily in the black and Puerto Rican areas of south Brooklyn. Abbatemarco is assisted in coordinating the administration of this gambling operation by Salvatore Albanese, a close associate of his. Abbatemarco handles most of his business meetings and the directing of the principals in his operation, including Salvatore Albanese and his major black controllers in his car. Abbatemarco conducts this business while moving around in his car so as to circumvent efforts by LE to overhear his conversations or effectively surveil him...[When] Anthony Abbatemarco is home, his black and gold Chevrolet is usually parked in front of his residence."

C. Panarella
On February 8 FBI CI reported: “[Charles] Panarella has been made Consigliere of the Family in place of Alphonse Persico. Although Panarella is serving in an ‘acting’ capacity, the feeling is strong that he will receive a permanent appointment. The leaders of the Family feel Allie Boy will have continuing legal problems and the position of Consigliere is too important to be handled by someone in Persico’s current position. There is also considerable dissatisfaction with Persico’s performance.

Around the middle of May DiBella and Abbatemarco promoted Vincent Gugliaro to Captain.

On May 30 FBI CI reported: "[He] knows of no meetings between 'Abbey' and Al Gallo or Mooney Cutrone or any of the those individuals in the Gallo crew, recently. In fact, since Abbey is very close to the Persico faction it is unlikely that he has had any dealings with the Gallos for many years. Since Cutrone has jumped back and forth from the Colombos to the Gallos, one might suspect he was closer to Abbey than the other people in the Gallo crew in recent years, but [CI] stated this is not true."

Source advised due to Thomas DiBella's age, Anthony Abbatemarco has assumed many of the powers and responsibilities of the Boss, including the direction of the overall Family policy. Source further advised Salvatore Albanese is Anthony Abbatemarco's enforcer who assists Abbatemarco in the conduct of the Family's affairs.

Also on [6/5], source advised within the past six months, on several occasions, Anthony Abbatemarco has expressed concern the FBI or the police were 'bugging' his telephone and residence and as a result Abbatemarco has stated he will discuss Family business only when in a safe place, such as public restaurants, the street, or his or a trusted 'member's' automobile. Source further advised he has observed Abbatemarco and Albanese together on numerous occasions within the last six months either in Abbatemarco's Chevrolet or Albanese's Buick, and as a result of conversations with the aforesaid subjects during the aforesaid time period, source has determined the subjects utilize their aforesaid personal vehicles to conduct Family business.

Around mid-to-late June Thomas DiBella was convicted on criminal contempt for refusing to testify before the FGJ.

On June 20 FBI CI reported: "[All] the 'wise guys' are very concerned about the court problems Tommy DiBella is having right now and everyone is standing by to see what is going to happen to him. [CI] stated Anthony Abbatemarco is handling all the problems now in connection with Family matters because of what is happening to DiBella. CI states things are very much unsettled now within the ranks of the Colombo Family."

On June 25 FBI CI reported: "[He] learned Abbey Abbatemarco had a 'meet' last week with Tommy DiBella at an Italian restaurant. After this meeting, Tropiano stated they had determined at the meeting that [redacted] Colombo Family while Tommy DiBella was in jail. Also discussed was the possibility of peace with the Gallos, after which all the Gallos would be killed."

J. Yacovelli (1970s)
On July 9 FBI CI reported: "[Joe] Yak [Yacovelli] is making moves to put his underlings in key positions...Some people expect Yak to make a move if Tommy DiBella goes to jail." (Yacovelli would be a central figure in the internal dissension of the mid-late 1970s.)

On July 11 the FBI surveilled a meeting at Hoffbrau's Restaurant in Bay Ridge. Those present were Boss Thomas DiBella, Underboss Anthony Abbatemarco, Captain Joseph Brancato, Soldier Leonard Dello and Associates Salvatore Albanese and Carmine Franzese.

On July 11 FBI CI reported: “[Abbatemarco] is going to take over the job as Boss if and when Tommy DiBella goes to jail and the job of Underboss will probably remain vacant. [CI] described Abbey Abbatemarco as a guy who ‘does not like violence’ and if a problem arises would prefer to ‘sit down and talk’ things over. [CI] states Sally Albanese was put with Abbatemarco by the ‘Colombo people’ to drive him around, do errands, and furnish protection.

On July 11 FBI CI reported: “[Alley] Boy Persico ‘slipped’ into Brooklyn with Michael Bolino driving, at approximately [redacted]. [CI] states Persico comes into town only if there are problems that have to be handled personally, or for talks. Persico does not remain in area very long because he is attempting to avoid being subpoenaed. [CI] states Persico is ‘on the lam’ and is believed to be hiding [redacted]. [CI] advised periodically Anthony Abbatemarco will drive upstate to visit Persico [redacted]. [CI] states there is a strong possibility Allie Boy will ‘slip’ into Brooklyn [redacted]."

On July 28 Abbatemarco and Colombo Soldiers James Cardello and Leonard Dello attended a clambake at the Columbus Club near Mohegan Lake.

By August 1974 violence broke out with what remained of the Gallo crew, this time between splinter factions within the group itself. Several murders and attempted murders followed.

On August 7 an informant gave a rundown of the situation and noted: "...[Dispute] was meanwhile brought to Carlo Gambino by Anthony Abbatemarco and the principals were told how to settle it without trouble [to no avail]."

On August 12 FBI CI reported: “On Thursday, Anthony Abbatemarco was seen in the neighborhood of 66th Street and 14th Avenue with Sal Albanese, conferring with individuals at the Villa 66 and Joe Pisani’s Tower Service."

The following day Abbatemarco was visited by Agents and advised of the car bug.

On August 18 an informant reported on what was apparently a meeting of high-ranking Colombos including Abbatemarco and Joseph Yacovelli. (This report is almost entirely redacted.)

On August 28 FBI CI reported:
"

[Abbey] was extremely upset when informed that the FBI had 'bugged' his car [and is] trying to recall what he could have said and to whom he may have talked to in the car. [CI] advised Abbey 'mortified' over the entire incident and had never heard of this type of thing being done before. [CI] states Abbatemarco held 'meets' with Capos Joe Brancato, Charles Panarella, [Redacted], ‘Cockeyed Alley’ Giannattasio, [Redacted] and Jimmy Muce about this matter and cautioned all not to talk in cars, to use such places as sidewalks.

Abbey sent a message to 'the old man' (who [CI] believes to be Gambino) about this situation, all of whom appeared to be sympathetic...Abbey’s attorney is urging him to answer Grand Jury questions as it is his opinion that there could be nothing in the tapes that Abbey could be put in jail for. [CI] states Abbey has not made decision yet as to whether he will answer questions. The attorney is going to try to get a copy of the tapes to see what is on them. [CI] advised Abbey is still 'shocked' and is extremely concerned the tape material is going to be put in the newspapers.

[Abbey] talked to [Redacted] at the Grand Jury proceeding and is trying hard to bring [Redacted] ‘back into the fold’. [CI] advised internal feud continues within the Gallo faction but Abbatemarco unable to stop the war.

[CI] advised Joe Brancato will probably become the Acting Boss of the Colombo Family if and when Abbatemarco goes to jail. [Abbey] meets with Brancato two or three times a month at various locations.

...[Redacted] family along with Alley Boy [Persico]'s wife and family are currently spending the summer at Saugerties...Abbey and Sally Albanese met with Alley Boy at the hideout about two weeks ago, just before he was subpoenaed by the FBI.

[CI] characterized [Colombo Captain] Vinny Gugliaro as having 'no guts' and a 'smooth talker'. [CI] stated Vinny was 'with the Gallos' during the Gallo-Profaci war but would do nothing. Abbey Abbatemarco thinks highly of Gugliaro because he likes a 'smooth talker'.

"

J. Brancato
Around the same date Abbatemarco stepped down as Acting Boss and was replaced by Joseph Brancato, who kept the position through 1975. (Brancato was inducted around the late 1940s and came up in the Musacchio crew. He took over as Captain for John Franzese, his longtime associate, after the latter began a long Federal sentence. Brancato previously served as Acting Boss for about eight months in 1972.)

Bill paid by Joe Brancato came to over $1,000."

On September 19 sixty-year-old Alfred Gallo was found shot to death inside his auto in Sheepshead Bay.

Gallo was involved in loansharking with Abbatemarco's uncle James Cardello, and it was later reported that Cardello sought Abbatemarco's assistance in recovering his money from the victim's associates.

On September 20 FBI CI reported: "[Abbey] has resigned himself to going to jail in the 'car bug' case while [redacted]."

On September 24 FBI CI reported: "[The] other regret that Abbatemarco has was the appointment of [Dominick] Mimi Scialo as a Captain because Scialo 'abused' everyone in the Colombo Family as well as members of other Families both verbally and physically, especially when he was drunk, which was often, eventually leading to Scialo being 'whacked out'...[CI] advised ‘Sally’ [Albanese] will do ‘as he is told’ by Abbey, but is worried about being charged with violation of probation."

On September 24 FBI CI reported: "[Vinny] Gugliaro is a Captain in the Colombo Family [and is described by CI] as a ‘weasel’ who 'hid under the bed' during a shootout in the Gallo-Profaci war. [CI] states despite this Abbatemarco is impressed with Gugliaro because he is a ‘smooth talker’. [CI] advised Gugliaro not being replaced permanently because he is in jail on a 90 day sentence and will get time off for good behavior. [CI] advised internal Gallo faction war continues [but] Abbatemarco not paying attention to Gallo problem any longer because of his 'own troubles'."

On September 25 FBI CI reported: "[Abbey] admitted to a Brooklyn hospital (location unknown) according to Sally Albanese."

On October 9 FBI CI reported: "[After] the FBI had delivered the letter to Abbey advising of the bug in his car he began having severe stomach pains. [CI] advised Abbey had no way of remembering what he had said because he is intoxicated on a regular basis. [CI] advised that Abbatemarco has resigned himself he is going to jail."

On October 10 married second wife at the Brooklyn Municipal Building. Witnesses included Associate Salvatore Albanese.

On October 18 FBI CI reported: “[Sally] Albanese has gone back to work in construction and occasionally will walk over to visit with Abbey at the [redacted].

A. Ricciardi Crime Scene
New York Daily News
On October 29 Colombo Soldier Anthony Ricciardi was shot to death inside his auto in Prospect Park, Brooklyn. Ricciardi, shot three times in the head at close range, had been picked up at least once on the Abbatemarco car bug.

On November 7 FBI CI reported: “[Little] Joey Brancato is Acting Boss of the Colombo Family now that Anthony Abbatemarco is afraid to leave his residence...Source heard [Colombo Soldier Frank] Fusco is in the hospital in Texas somewhere and his son Sally is still on the lam ducking a subpoena for the Abbatemarco car bug case.

On November 11 underwent medical examination to determine competency relating to EDNY FGJ subpoena.

On November 18 Abbatemarco, Soldier Leonard Dello and Associate Salvatore Albanese observed in discussion with an attorney outside the Federal Courthouse in Brooklyn.

On November 18 FBI CI reported: “[Abbey] continues to maintain a low profile and doesn’t leave the house too much other than to see his attorney or for medical reasons. [CI] states at Abbey’s doctor’s suggestion, he checked into Mount Sinai last week and had all kinds of tests taken, including psychiatric. [Abbey] trying desperately to come up with something that will prevent him from going before the FGJ and ending up in the can. [CI] does not believe Abbey will talk under any circumstances. [CI] advised two weeks ago on a Monday, Tuttie Franzese visited with Abbatemarco at his residence and does so periodically as ‘go between’ Brancato and Abbatemarco. [CI] advised Sally Albanese walks over for visits with Abbey. [Sally] is a ‘steward’ in construction business and has small numbers business going...[CI] of the opinion that Charles Panarella will stay on the job as a captain because he was made under Anthony Abbatemarco and Brancato’s takeover is considered being under the same administration.

On November 21 FBI CI reported: “[A] bookmaker for [Genovese Member] Toddo Marino named [Redacted] (LNU), son of wife of the couple who own Casa Storta, 21st St, Brooklyn, was overheard to say Tony Long (Anthony Ricciardi) was whacked out because he was on the tape with [Redacted] and Abbey Abbatemarco and in some way was compromised. [Redacted] said he wouldn’t be surprised if Abbey is the next one to be whacked out because of the bugging incident...Sally Albanese is working in construction until 12:00 AM each workday. [CI] states Abbey Abbatemarco stays at home a good deal and does nothing but mope around."

On November 22 the FBI submitted its annual La Cosa Nostra report. The Colombo Family section noted: "...Anthony Abbatemarco continues as Underboss in this 'family' with the recently added responsibility of the Consiglieri role. The results of [Abbatemarco car bug investigation?] have greatly contributed to the disruption of the Colombo 'Family'."

An accompanying hierarchy chart listed Abbatemarco as both Underboss and Consigliere.

On December 12 Boss Thomas DiBella was visited by FBI Agents at FDH Manhattan and given another GJ subpoena.

On December 23 FBI CI (Colombo Member Source?) reported:
"

[In] a continuing rundown of Colombo Family history, he learned Abbey Abbatemarco was 'made' in early 1956 or 1957 around Easter time under the sponsorship of his father 'Tony [sic; Frankie] Shots'. CI states 'Tony Shots' operated a substantial numbers operation, but owed a lot of money to people which he refused to pay, thereby drawing the ire of Joe Profaci. Profaci gave the contract to Joseph Colombo. [CI] stated 'Tony Shots' subsequently 'hit' by Joe Colombo the triggerman, accompanied by [Redacted] in the Cardella Bar on 4th Ave with two unknown accomplices waiting in a car. [CI] advised the Gallos had nothing to do with the hit of 'Tony Shots' and when the Gallos made their move against Profaci the 5th Avenue crowd (meaning Persico and Abbatemarco factions) joined in with the Gallos.

[CI] advised Larry Gallo was 'set up' at the Sahara Bar on Utica Avenue where Sally D [D'Ambrosio] attempted to choke him. [CI] states Sally D also shot the cop who came in the bar, but the cops locked Abbey up at the time on a mistaken identification inasmuch as Abbey and Sally D were of same physical stature...[Abbey] currently attempting to show that he is incompetent to testify due to alcoholism, physical sickness, and/or psychiatric disorders, in fact anything that will get him off the hook with the Grand Jury. [Abbey] visits his physician [and] continues to have few visitors due to his problems resulting from the 'bug'. [Abbey] derives his income from a [redacted]...[Abbey] has utilized the office of Attorney [Redacted] for a meet with Joe Yacovelli. [CI] states there were others in the room but Yak and Abbey split and went into another room for a conversation. [CI] states Sally Fusco sent by Abbey to drive Yak around.

"

On December 28 Thomas DiBella was released from FDH Manhattan and a meeting was held at Abbatemarco's residence the following day.

1975

On January 8 FBI CI reported: “[Abbey] is definitely having physical and mental problems [and] is planning his defense against testifying before the GJ [redacted]. Although [redacted] even further so under no circumstances will he go before the GJ. [CI] advised [redacted] he noticed Abbatemarco would be staring off into space and unable to hold any type of intelligent conversation...[If] in the event Abbatemarco eventually takes the stand, he has no intentions of talking [redacted]...[Sally] Albanese is in big trouble with the ‘wise guys’ as a result of the microphone surveillance, although, he and Abbatemarco expect to go to jail. The ‘wise guys’ are afraid Sally might have talked too much and are afraid by his talking, he may have gone too far. [Both] are attempting to have themselves cited for criminal contempt rather than civil contempt as the criminal contempt has a specific time sentence. [CI] stated [Redacted] under no circumstances wanted a civil contempt against them and have contacted their attorneys to have them given criminal contempt which is far more palatable.

On January 13 Thomas DiBella was served with yet another GJ subpoena.

On January 23 FBI CI reported: “[He] has not seen Abbatemarco on the street or hanging around with any of the Colombos for the last couple of months...[CI] advised Salvatore Albanese continues to be concerned about his GJ testimony, but he is a daily visitor to the Diplomat Bar on Carroll Street and Third Avenue. [CI] advised Anthony Abbatemarco is considered to be a very tough guy and well respected around the wise guys.

A. Giardano (1970s)
On January 27 FBI CI reported: "[He] has learned that Anthony Giardano, LCN Boss from St. Louis, came to NYC the week before Thanksgiving 1974 and met with Gambino Consigliere Joseph N. Gallo, Genovese Underboss [sic] Philip Lombardo aka Benny Squint and Colombo Acting Boss [sic; Underboss] Anthony Abbatemarco. CI states meet took place at Italian restaurant on 3rd Avenue in the 70's, NYC with the name Ristorante on the front. Purpose of this meet unknown." (Eli Zeccardi, not Philip Lombardo, is believed to have been Genovese Underboss in November 1974.)

On January 27 FBI CI reported:
"

[The] next morning after DiBella was released from jail (12/28), DiBella drove by himself to the residence of Abbatemarco for a meet between 9:30 and 10:00 AM. [CI] states he heard DiBella again met with Abbey at the Abbatemarco residence on the following Monday (12/30) in the AM.

[Since] DiBella is the permanent boss of the Colombo Family, Abbatemarco, an Underboss and formerly Acting Boss before Brancato (a former Captain) was made acting boss, no major decisions will be made without consultation among the triad. However, [CI] states DiBella and Abbatemarco are practically immobile with legal problems and FBI heat, therefore Brancato is handling all the routine decisions and meets on the street level.

[Alphonse] Persico is the Consigliere of the Colombo Family, elevated to that position under the regime of Anthony Abbatemarco. [CI] states the position of Consigliere is one that is normally voted on by the men, but this time the procedure was waived because of turbulence within the ranks and was due to a special situation. [CI] advised the position of Consigliere in the LCN is not unlike that of a 'shop steward' in a union. The consigliere is supposed to listen to 'beefs', mediate and represent soldiers in inter-Family disputes.

...[There] is a 'lead' Captain in each Family. Jimmy Muce serves in this capacity for the Colombos and James Failla is the lead Captain in the Gambino Family. Contact between the Colombos and the Gambinos were frequent including meets every two or three weeks between bosses Anthony Abbatemarco and Carlo Gambino.

"

On February 5-6 the wake for Abbatemarco's uncle, Colombo Soldier James Cardello, was held at A. Addeo Funeral Home in Park Slope. Attendees included DiBella and Abbatemarco. CI noted: "[Just] about the entire Colombo Family turned out for the wake [and] although Joe Yac did not go, source heard he sent a representative."

On February 26 Colombo Associate Nicholas Grancio was interviewed and admitted knowing Abbatemarco among others.

On March 3 Thomas DiBella appeared before the EDNY FGJ, again refused to testify and was remanded to FDH Manhattan for another six months.

On March 19 FBI CI reported: “[Abbey] continues to be preoccupied with his GJ problems and as a result has few visitors and travel is limited to his attorney, doctor or the court.

On March 28 FBI CI reported: “[Former] Acting Boss Anthony Abbatemarco continues to be pretty much neutralized and preoccupied with his legal and health problems. He receives few visitors and will walk over to Sally Albanese’s house for a few hours periodically. Source states Sally Albanese broke his leg in three places and as a result is restricted in activity...Source advised [Redacted] recently was released from prison and on parole and would stop by to see Abbey Abbatemarco as a sign of respect. Source states [Redacted] is a long time 'muscle kid' for Jr. Persico and comes from [redacted]."

On March 28 FBI CI reported: "[Colombo Boss] Thomas DiBella has always been close to Anthony Abbatemarco and was even closer to the latter's father...'Abbey' is drinking heavier than usual and he has always been a heavy drinker."

Beginning in late April 1975 Colombo Associate Salvatore 'Sonny Black' Montello, a longtime Franzese - Brancato crew associate, was interviewed by the FBI and provided an extensive narrative of his time with the Colombos.

On May 6 Montello reported: "[Acting Boss Joseph] Brancato originally reported to Joe Colombo, subsequently to Vinnie Aloi, and then to [Charles] Panarella. He could only assume that each of the above had assumed the position of boss of the Family. While in jail in 1974, he had heard that Brancato was delivering messages directly for Joe Yacovelli. Montello recalled meeting Anthony Abbatemarco at Joe Brancato's son's marriage, around 4/1/1974, at which time he heard Abbatemarco was the boss of the Family. He had also met Salvatore Albanese, whom he described as a proposed member, but not a ‘good fellow’.

On May 23 FBI CI reported: “[Abbatemarco] is becoming more active lately and has been observed at Monte’s Restaurant [redacted] during the last two weeks. Abbatemarco has been accompanied by Sally Albanese who also has been getting around a lot lately despite his broken leg. [Abbatemarco] has been observed meeting with [Redacted] at [redacted]. CI stated Sally Albanese was accompanying Anthony Abbatemarco at this meet.

On June 9 FBI CI reported: “[The] word on the street is that they suspect Abbey [redacted] as a result of his mental illness and acute alcoholism. CI advised Abbey still commands respect on the street in spite of his problems [redacted].

On June 16 FBI CI reported: "[Abbatemarco] is in favor of [redacted] and source believes he will be in a position to furnish specific information at the proper time. The reason for [redacted]."

On June 26 FBI CI (Colombo Member) reported: "[Abbatemarco] made a big mistake in making [Vincent Gugliaro a captain], which he now realizes, [redacted]."

On July 8 FBI CI reported: “[He] thinks Abbey is going to [redacted] as he is a confirmed alcoholic and in all probability does not remember what he said while he was being monitored in his automobile. [Abbey] is no tough guy and he does not have the heart to personally carry out any strong arm assignments. He prefers others to do his dirty work as he is afraid of being disliked. [Abbey] got into the rackets as a result of his father, Frank Shots, who is originator of the numbers operation in Brooklyn. [CI] advised Abbey was a happy go lucky kid more interested in sports than in gambling but he had to do something, so he sort of drifted into his father’s numbers operation. [Abbey] does not hold the Gallos responsible for the death of his father, [redacted] so Abbey had his beef with Profaci and not the Gallos as many suspect. Abbey continues to be big in the numbers but since his GJ problems, he has not been at all active even though he heads up the operation.

J. Failla
On July 9 the US Attorney's Office for the Southern District of New York advised FBI: "[SDNY] furnished the following info which he received from an informant who he [SDNY] considers reliable. There have been a series of meetings recently between [Redacted], Mike Bolino, [Redacted] and Tony Abbatemarco at Monte's Restaurant, Brooklyn. The purpose of these meetings is to plan the murders of James Failla and [Redacted]. [His] informant has stated there is some connection between the recent arrest of Paul Castellano and the plan to kill Failla and [Redacted]. By way of background, the informant advised [SDNY] that a couple of years ago when the Colombo Family was being destroyed by internal strife, Carlo Gambino stepped in and settled all disputes. Gambino then took as a reward for his intercession, several Colombo operations. Apparently Gambino gave these operations to Failla and [Redacted]. The above mentioned individuals meeting at Monte's Restaurant feel if they 'hit' Failla and [Redacted], they can get the businesses back that were originally theirs. Reportedly, Failla got a construction union but [SDNY] has no further details." (No move was made against Gambino Captain James Failla and he died in 1994.)

On July 10 Unsub interviewed by FBI in Westchester County: "[During] the 1950's he knew Anthony 'Abbey' Abbatemarco, during which period of time Abbey was very close to Larry Gallo and numerous members of the Gallo crew, and frequently would be seen on President Street, in the company of the Gallos. At this time, Abbey's father, Frankie 'Shots' Abbatemarco was running a very lucrative gambling business in the Bedford-Stuyvesant section of Brooklyn, under control of the Profaci LCN mob. Because of the Gallos wanting to get a piece of Frankie 'Shots' gambling business, they attempted to persuade Abbey to have his father leave Profaci and come with the Gallos. [Redacted paragraphs]."

On August 1 FBI CI reported: “[Abbey] has told everyone to stay away from him because of his legal problems with the exception of Sally Albanese.

On August 29 FBI CI reported: “[Abbey] gone on his camper trip for about five days...Abbey becoming more active lately with a few people like [Redacted] visiting him in the afternoon. Other individuals meeting with Abbey are [Redacted] also Vinnie Gugliaro [redacted].

On September 2 Thomas DiBella was released from FDH Manhattan.

H. McIntosh
On September 5 Colombo Associate Hugh McIntosh was released from USP Atlanta, Georgia.

On September 8 a welcome home party was held at Nestor's Social Club in Park Slope. Attendees included Underboss Anthony Abbatemarco and Associate Salvatore Albanese. Agent noted: "Observations at [club] reflected that the window was decorated with crepe paper streamers with a big sign reading, 'Welcome home MACK'."

On September 27 the daughter of Colombo Associate Carmine Franzese married, with the reception held at Queens Terrace Caterers in Woodside.

Attendees included:

- Ralph Scopo (Associate)

On October 4 a reception for Soldier Rocco Miraglia's daughter was held at Shalimar Caterers in New Dorp, Staten Island. Abbatemarco, Albanese and most of those named above were in attendance.

Eight days later an informant reported: "[Rocky] was extremely upset because a lot of people he did invite, people he was associated with in the Colombo Family for many years, did not attend. He was particularly upset [Redacted] did not attend and was surprised [Redacted], who is related to Joe Colombo through marriage, did not attend. He advised that he did receive some envelopes containing gifts to the bride from some of the members but many of them just completely ignored the invitation and even failed to send a gift."

On October 20 DiBella, Abbatemarco and Colombo Associates Michael Bolino and Thomas Venetucci were surveilled in Brooklyn.

On October 21 Acting Boss Joseph Brancato, Underboss Anthony Abbatemarco and Associate Carmine Franzese were observed by FBI in ‘deep’ conversation at the corner of 63rd St and 11th Ave in Dyker Heights.

On October 28 FBI CI reported: “[He] recently heard Joseph Brancato has had several high echelon meetings regarding the future of the Colombo Crime Family. [No] definite word as to what has transpired at these meetings, but speculated that there will be an upheaval in the leadership of the Family within the next several weeks. Source stated rumor has it that Brancato may step down as head of the Family. This, however, has not been substantiated as yet.

On November 7 FBI CI reported: “Joey Brancato continues to be the Acting Boss taking care of ‘everything in the street’ and mediating disputes with other Families. [CI] states Anthony Abbatemarco and Sally Albanese went to see [Genovese Associate] Jimmy Napoli last week, in Sally Albanese’s car. [Abbey] continues to be more active lately and also went to see Joey Brancato. [Abbey] and Joey use restaurants such as Criscies for meets. [CI] states Tommy DiBella continues to visit Abbey a couple of times a week.

On November 27 FBI CI reported: "[Tommy] DiBella and Tony Abbatemarco although high-ranking persons in the Family no longer seem to be too important in calling the shots."

On December 5 FBI CI reported: "[Colombo] Family permanent Boss, Tommy DiBella, permanent Underboss, Anthony Abbatemarco, and Consigliere, Alley Boy Persico, are seen meeting together frequently [at] Alley Boy Persico's residence. Source states Joe Brancato continues to be the 'Acting Boss' taking care of the street problems and mediating 'beefs' between the crews. [CI] pointed out although Brancato is the 'Acting Boss' he will do nothing involving a major decision until he consults the above triad."

Around early December 1975 Joseph Brancato was taken down as Acting Boss and resumed his duties as Captain.

On December 17 FBI NYO reported: "[CI] recently advised the Commission of LCN still exists in the same form as it always had, although formal inter-communication has been reduced. He added the country has been subdivided by regions and when it becomes necessary for a message to be passed or a topic discussed between Families of different regions, one LCN Boss is designated to represent each region. He offered as an example Anthony Giardano, LCN Boss of St. Louis, represents the 'western' region in contacts with the eastern counterparts. He further illustrated the above by pointed out Giardano had visited NY in the Winter of 1974 and met with the Gambino Consigliere, Joseph N. Gallo, Genovese Capo Phil Lombardo and Colombo Underboss Anthony Abbatemarco."

In December 1975 included in the FBI's list of 73 identified Colombo Family members.

1976 - Books Open + Attempted Coup

On January 16 the FBI compiled a report on the status of LCN Families nationwide. The Colombo Family section noted: "Anthony Abbatemarco, the Underboss, in an attempt to avoid testifying before the FGJ EDNY under a grant of immunity, claimed he had organic brain problems caused by chronic alcoholism which was a result of his service in WWII in the USMC. After much delay, Abbatemarco did testify and it is anticipated he will be indicted for Obstruction of Justice and Perjury in the latter part of 12/75 or early 1/76."

On January 23 FBI CI reported: “[Redacted] is a hangout for various Colombo Family LCN figures. [On] several occasions in the evening Sally Albanese and Anthony Abbatemarco have been observed hanging around the bar and conducting business in this location. Source further advised several other Colombo LCN Family figures unfamiliar to him have been observed in the bar with Sally and Abbey."

On January 30 FBI CI reported: “[The] Underboss of the Colombo Family is Anthony Abbatemarco and he has one man under him named Salvatore Albanese. [CI] stated although Abbey is the Underboss he is not functioning very well in that capacity because of GJ and FBI pressures. CI stated Abbey is far more concerned about going to jail than Family matters.

In early February 1976 the New York Families opened their books for the first time since approximately 1957. Each Family was initially allowed ten new members.

The Colombo Family's first wave were inducted on February 5. Abbatemarco sponsored Salvatore Albanese.

On February 10 FBI CI reported: “CI advised the Colombo LCN Family initiated ten new members on the previous Thursday and Friday (February 5 and 6)...Anthony Abbatemarco (Underboss) sponsored Salvatore Albanese...[Those named] are now ‘good-fellows’ (members of LCN) and recognized as such by all Families."

On April 7 FBI CI reported: “[Although] Anthony Abbatemarco and Thomas DiBella are the titular heads of the Colombo Family, Alphonse Persico has the real power and the other two are merely puppets. [CI] stated Carmine Persico seems to be running the Family from prison. He advised Alphonse Persico has been drinking quite heavily and consumes approximately one quart and a half of scotch every day. He said of the Family members he considers Persico quite dangerous since he makes decisions without conferring with other members and without regard to the consequences.

On April 21 FBI CI reported: “[CI] advised Anthony Abbatemarco resuming pretty much of a normal routine now, is driven around all the time by [Redacted; Albanese?]."

T. Contaldo
FBN Mafia Book
On May 7 FBI CI advised of an upcoming meeting to be attended by Underboss Anthony Abbatemarco, Genovese Soldier Thomas 'Crazy Tommy' Contaldo and newly made Colombo members Andrew Russo and Thomas Spero.

On the same date Abbatemarco was said to have met with Genovese Boss Frank 'Funzi' Tieri.

On May 14 FBI CI reported:

[Thomas] DiBella continues to be the head of the Joseph Colombo LCN Family. His Underboss is Anthony Abbatemarco and his Consigliere is Alphonse Persico. Source stated the Colombo Family has been running on to hard times as a result of federal state and local pressure and many of the members are disenchanted with the earnings of the Colombo Family. Source advised many members are crossing Family lines to align themselves with Genovese members. Source attributed this to the fact that Colombo crew members had not been handling junk and Genovese has and that is where the real money is for LCN figures.

...[At] one time while DiBella and Persico were in jail and Abbatemarco was having his problems with Federal Grand Juries, [Joseph] Brancato was running the everyday affairs for the Family, however, Brancato has been relegated back to his sprawl as Capo in the Family.

On May 17 FBI CI reported: “[Abbatemarco] has pretty much resumed his old schedule and moves around a lot. He is almost always accompanied by Sally Albanese who drives him around in a 1976 Lincoln, grey.

On June 23 FBI CI reported: “[Abbey] is more active lately and is almost always accompanied by Sally Albanese.

By June 30 Abbatemarco had a crew of Soldiers reporting directly to him. (The chart itself is redacted but the crew likely consisted of the newly made members named below.)

On September 24 FBI CI reported: "[Every] La Cosa Nostra Family from New York will be well represented at Colombo Underboss Anthony Abbatemarco's [redacted] wedding, [redacted]. Reception is to be at the [redacted] in Staten Island. All Colombo members including those newly 'made' will be in attendance."

On September 30 FBI CI reported: "[There] is trouble brewing in the leadership of the Colombo Family. Thomas DiBella and Anthony Abbatemarco are extremely concerned about Alphonse Persico's drinking habits."

On October 3 Abbatemarco's relative was married, with the reception held in Staten Island. Attendees included Pittston Boss Russell Bufalino, Gambino Acting Boss Paul Castellano, Los Angeles Underboss Aladena 'Jimmy' Fratianno, Genovese Boss Frank Tieri, Bonanno Underboss Nicholas 'Nicky Glasses' Marangello, Genovese Captain Joseph Lapi, Colombo Soldier John Cutrone and presumably the majority of Colombo membership.

J. Cutrone
Two days later John Cutrone was shot to death during a staged robbery inside Big Danny's Luncheonette in Midwood.

On October 15 FBI CI reported: "[Redacted] have given no explanation that would indicate that the hit [on John Cutrone] was an intra Family matter or sanctioned by the Family...Source stated that Rusty Bufalino, Pittston, PA LCN Boss attended the Abbatemarco wedding reception 10/3/76 in Staten Island in company of Los Angeles LCN Boss [sic] Jimmy Fratianno and [Redacted]...Source heard Carlo Gambino was very ill that he could not attend the Abbatemarco wedding as he was in or just released from Victory Memorial Hospital at the time for emergency blood and cardiac tests." (Carlo died the same day as this report.)

By Fall 1976 made members reporting direct to Abbatemarco included first wave inductees Salvatore Albanese, Salvatore Fusco, Philip 'Fat Foongie' Gambino, Joseph 'Joe Black' Gorgone, Anthony Scarpati and Thomas Spero.

G. Langella (L) and A. Russo
On November 9 FBI CI reported: "[Jerry] Langella and Andrew Russo have recently been made captains in the Colombo Family. At the present time, neither has a crew assigned to him. Source said the making of Russo and Langella as captains has further widened the rift between Tommy DiBella, Anthony Abbatemarco and Alphonse Persico. He said DiBella and Abbatemarco acted specifically against Alley Boy's wishes in making the two captains. He said after a brief sit-down between the three, it was decided no publicity within the Family would be given the new appointments until at least after the new members are inducted in November or December. He said with respect to the running of the Family, Persico has only been able to push Abbatemarco just so far. He said the making of the new captains is an example of DiBella's 'flexing his muscles'. He said despite Persico's opposition to the move, the appointments will stand." (Subsequent reports suggest that Langella and Russo were not formally promoted to Captains until early the following year, but it's possible that's when the appointments were instead made known to the wider membership.)

J. Yacovelli (1970s)
By the middle of November the Family had divided into two camps. One side supported DiBella and the Persicos. The other, headed by Former Acting Boss Joseph Yacovelli and Underboss Anthony Abbatemarco, felt that DiBella favored the Persicos too strongly and sought to remove him as Boss.

The Yacovelli - Abbatemarco faction had the support of Family Captains Joseph Brancato, James Clemenza, Vincent Gugliaro and Salvatore Lombardino Jr.

Charles Panarella was the only Captain loyal to the Persicos, although a couple of his men, including Colombo Soldier and Former FBI CI Gregory Scarpa, threw in with Yacovelli.

On November 29 FBI CI reported: "[He] heard on 11/24/1976 that the Colombo Family split into two factions the week of 11/22/1976, one consisting of Joseph Yacovelli, Gregory Scarpa, Salvatore Albanese, Vincent Gugliaro, Anthony Abbatemarco, [Redacted] and others, totaling 10-15 who want Yacovelli to replace Thomas DiBella as Boss of the Family. This group approached Frank Tieri, Boss of the Genovese Family, inasmuch as Tieri is a member of the Commission. There will be a meeting of the Commission to resolve the matter. When Alphonse Persico heard Yacovelli's group approached Tieri he became extremely angry and said he would go to war. In the Persico group are Michael Bolino, [Redacted], Hugh McIntosh, [Redacted] and others yet unknown. [CI] advised Albanese, Bolino and the others are all carrying guns."

On December 1 FBI CI reported: "Source advised [Redacted] and Jerry Langella are canvassing connected individuals to see what side they will be on. Source advises Joe Yacovelli has five Colombo Capos aligned with him in his attempt to oust Alphonse Persico and [Redacted]. [Redacted] is trying to obtain a surveillance truck and cars. CI confirms a meeting of the Commission is to be held in the near future."

On December 1 FBI CI reported: "[Redacted] and Jerry Lang are currently each carrying pieces. They are also spending time dealing with Apples McIntosh who is also carrying a piece. Source stated all day 11/29/76 and part of 11/30/76, these three men were calling people down and asking them to declare who you are with. Source believes they talked to at least 15 people including some people who were reporting to Mooney Cutrone. Source believes a war is about to break out in the immediate future between the Persico people and the Colombo people. Source believes [Redacted] was behind the shooting of Mooney Cutrone. Source stated contracts are currently out on [Redacted] and [Redacted]. [Redacted] and [Redacted] operate a bookmaking establishment at [redacted] in Brooklyn. There is also a contract out on [Redacted]. [Redacted] operates a night club on [redacted] in Brooklyn. [Redacted] and [Redacted] are all carrying pieces. Source stated many of the Persico crew hang around every Friday and Saturday night at a very large ziganette game which is placed in the back room of the social club at Third Street and Carroll Avenue in Brooklyn. Source stated numerous men, many of them parolees, are in this club Friday and Saturday nights carrying pieces. Source stated at [redacted] is [Redacted]'s ziganette game where numerous Colombo people go to play on every Friday and Saturday night, also heavily armed. Source believes it will be in that immediate neighborhood where the trouble will start. This being due to the fact both clubs are within a block of each other heavily armed at this time."

F. Tieri
On December 2 FBI CI reported:
"
[Genovese Boss Frank] Tieri conferred with a Chicago member of Commission in Chicago week of 11/22/1976. It was decided that the four New York Families, other than Colombo, would sit at the Commission to adjudicate Persico-Yacovelli dispute within the next two or three weeks. Source advised prior to approaching Frank Tieri with grievance, Yacovelli counseled with Tony Ducks Corallo of Lucchese Family. Sitdown will consist of Paul Castellano or Joe N. Gallo for Gambino Family, Corallo for Lucchese, Frank Tieri for Genovese, and Lilo Galante for Bonanno. Also attending will be Alphonse Persico, Thomas DiBella, Joe Yacovelli and Anthony Abbatemarco. Source advised if the Yacovelli faction does not get a favorable ruling they will go to war. Source advised Frank Tieri feels Yacovelli stepped out of line in bringing his grievance to someone outside the Colombo Family and he is wrong in this situation. Source advised if Persico receives favorable ruling, Yacovelli, Joseph Brancato and Anthony Abbatemarco will be killed and the rest of the insurgent Capos demoted. If an adverse ruling is received Persico will go to war.

Source advised Yacovelli has support of Underboss Abbatemarco, Capos Joseph Brancato, Vincent Gugliaro, James Clemenza and Salvatore Lombardino. Generally, all members of each Capo's regime have followed Capo. Aniello Giannattasio's former regime has gone to Yacovelli. Only the regime of Charles Panarella has remained with Persico. Fred Clemenza and Gregory Scarpa of the Panarella regime have gone to Yacovelli. Source advised Alphonse Persico incensed with disloyalty of Anthony Abbatemarco, but maintaining peace as instructed by Tieri. Tieri said that Commission will rule against whoever spills first blood. Source advised move made by Yacovelli at the time because he was afraid recent elevation of Jerry Langella and Andrew Russo to Capo would mean added strength for Persico faction.

"

On December 15 FBI CI reported: "[The] Colombo captains' rift was 'in the hands of the Commission' which probably would resolve the matter with a meeting in New York City immediately after the holidays. In the meantime phase II of the initiation of new members was being postponed until Easter 1977. Source noted there will be no shooting at least until after the decision by the Commission certainly not by the Abbatemarco - Yacovelli faction so as not to prejudice their case; since they already realize the Commission will generally not decide against another incumbent Boss unless an overwhelming case is made against him. Source related that Abbatemarco and Joe Brancato met twice in early December with Genovese Boss Frank 'Funzie' Tieri who is serving as an intermediary with the Commission. Source added Tutti Lombardino is solidly behind Abbatemarco with his Jersey crew [redacted]. He explained further there is extensive dissension in [Redacted]'s crew since [redacted]. Source feels it is not unlikely individual crew members may go with the rival captains' faction should the issue come to a shooting war."

The Commission meeting was held December 29. Attendees included Lucchese Acting Boss Antonio 'Tony Ducks' Corallo, Colombo Boss Thomas DiBella, Bonanno Acting Boss Carmine 'Lilo' Galante, Genovese Boss Frank Tieri, Unnamed Chicago Boss (presumably Joseph Aiuppa), Colombo Underboss Anthony Abbatemarco, Colombo Consigliere Alphonse Persico and Colombo Captain James Clemenza. Notably, Joseph Yacovelli failed to appear.

It was ruled that 'mere dissatisfaction among Capos' was not enough to break a Boss. The Commission members ruled that the dissidents could be demoted but ordered that no blood be spilled.

1977 - Demotion / Reorganization

Following the Commission ruling Joseph Brancato and Salvatore Lombardino Jr. were demoted to Soldier and Brancato was placed directly with the Boss.

Despite his involvement in the plot, James Clemenza was temporarily allowed to keep his crew because they were primarily based in Florida and he was planning to relocate there himself.

Gennaro Langella and Andrew Russo were promoted to (or formally announced as) Captains.

Aniello Giannattasio, demoted the previous September, was reinstated.

Joseph Yacovelli, Anthony Abbatemarco and Captain Vincent Gugliaro refused to answer DiBella's summons.

In the meantime Abbatemarco's crew was broken up and split between Langella and Russo.

On January 12 an informant provided an update: "...Yacovelli, who was summoned at least twice by DiBella, failed to respond. If Yacovelli continues to ignore DiBella he will be killed. Also failing to respond are Abbatemarco and Vincent Gugliaro. They too will be killed if they continue to ignore DiBella. These murders will not be contrary to Commission ruling since the reason is their failure to respond to the call of DiBella and not directly arising out of leadership dispute...Salvatore Albanese, whose disloyalty particularly disturbed Persico, has been placed under Andrew Russo. Persico is so incensed by Albanese he (Persico) will kill him if given the slightest excuse. Source expects complete realignment of Family in the near future as well as induction of several new members."

On the same date (possibly an alternate version of the above): "...DiBella called in Abbatemarco with the purpose of reducing him in rank, as well as Vincent Gugliaro and Joseph Yacovelli, however, none responded to the call. Source said that despite the directions of the Commission insisting that no bloodshed be spilled, if Abbatemarco, Gugliaro and Yacovelli continue to ignore the Boss' call, they can then be murdered with the blessing of the Commission. Source noted that up to this point, Yacovelli had failed to respond to at least two, and probably three, calls. He said that Abbatemarco had failed to respond to at least two calls. Source said that Salvatore Albanese, who had been assigned under Abbatemarco, had been instructed to have Abbatemarco respond to DiBella's call. Abbatemarco failed to show up and will be given one more chance. If he fails to show up the third time, a contract will be issued on his life."

On January 25 an informant noted that Yacovelli had heeded DiBella's call for a meeting and therefore 'cannot be killed'.

On February 4 FBI CI reported: “[Abbatemarco] has been left alone so far since the Colombo Family dispute has been resolved. He will be demoted eventually."

On February 8 FBI CI reported: "[To] date Abbatemarco is still on the 'lam' and Abbatemarco's failure to comply with the Commission's directive is causing considerable concern and it is felt that if Abbatemarco continued to disregard the Commission's directive, a contract will be put out on Abbatemarco's life."

A March 3 update on Colombo matters noted: "Anthony Abbatemarco (broken to Soldier) failed to report to DiBella for reassignment as ordered by Commission - currently on the lam."

On March 22 FBI CI reported: "[He] heard the decision to kill Anthony Abbatemarco had been made and efforts to locate him will commence shortly. Present whereabouts of Abbatemarco is still unknown to DiBella/Persico faction."

On March 23 Abbatemarco was located and interviewed by Agents: "[Special Agents] contacted Abbatemarco at [redacted], and advised him in essence of info received from [CI re plot on life]. Abbatemarco appeared visibly shaken and nervous about the matter and freely discussed his prospects with the agents. He expressed grave concern over who would provide for his family if he were killed. He also referred to the fact his father 'Tony [sic; Frankie] Shots' was murdered 'in this life'. Several times during this conversation Abbatemarco inquired of the present whereabouts of [other Special Agent (SA)]. Abbatemarco indicated he had previously spoken with [SA] on several occasions. Abbatemarco indicated that he was aware of Persico's intense dislike for [SA], however he personally liked [SA] and had never had any unpleasant experiences in his dealings with him. Abbatemarco also repeatedly expressed his appreciation the agents had taken the time to travel 'all this way' to warn him." FBI noted: "It was the observation of the agents Abbatemarco seemed extremely vulnerable at this time to contacts aimed at eliciting his cooperation with LE. [SAs] were left with the impression Abbatemarco was interested in establishing contact with [SA]. NY believes [SA] would, because of his previously established rapport, be in an excellent position to exploit Abbatemarco's vulnerability. NY therefore recommends [SA] travel as soon as practical to NY to contact Abbatemarco. This should be done in the very near future since it is anticipated Abbatemarco will go deeper into hiding." (There is no indication that Abbatemarco ever provided information.)

S. Albanese
On May 3 Colombo Soldier Salvatore Albanese, formerly one of Abbatemarco's closest associates, disappeared. He was last seen by members of his family at 3:00 PM. Four hours later he was observed by local police outside a social club at 1714 86th St in Bensonhurst. NYPD intelligence claimed he was en route to a 'peace meeting' with DiBella and members of the Persico faction. It's believed he was murdered the same night on Family orders. Informants later named Colombo Soldier and Former FBI CI Gregory Scarpa and Persico loyalist Hugh McIntosh as suspects.

On May 11 FBI CI reported: “[Salvatore] Albanese’s wife was calling people to find out what happened to her husband. Whenever Albanese was away from home he would call his wife every day. Source advised he heard Albanese was killed Tuesday, 5/3/1977. Source advised the word has been put out to other Families that the Colombo Family is looking for Anthony Abbatemarco. The reason the Family is seeking him has not been articulated, but source says the other Families assume what the reason is.

On May 12 FBI CI reported: "[One] of the reasons Joseph Yacovelli attempted [coup] was [redacted]. [CI] said while Yacovelli was a fugitive no efforts were made to provide for him or his family. This particularly embittered Yacovelli and, coupled with the fact that [redacted] Yacovelli convinced Underboss Anthony Abbatemarco and all the other Captains [to join him]."

On or around May 18 FBI CI reported: “[He] has heard that Colombo Family Soldier Salvatore Albanese is dead, and there is a ‘contract’ out on the life of former Colombo Underboss Anthony Abbatemarco. Source advised Albanese was murdered and the contract was put out on Anthony Abbatemarco because they had unsuccessfully attempted to have the LCN Commission remove Colombo Family Boss Thomas DiBella from power. Source advised he has heard Abbatemarco is still on the ‘lam’ and is aware of the fact that Albanese is dead and that there is a contract out on his (Abbatemarco’s) life. Source advised he would meet with the writer in person in the near future and furnish additional details.

In September and November 1977 the FBI compiled updated Colombo Family charts. Both reports listed the Underboss position as Vacant and noted: "Anthony Abbatemarco - formerly underboss (is currently in hiding)."

1978 - 1980s

On July 24 FBI CI reported: "[He] had heard Joseph Yacovelli aka 'Joe Yak' has been killed and was hit by the same people who killed Sally Albanese and Abbey. [CI] advised he heard Albanese was previously responsible for killing a LCN figure Gerry Ciprio. Albanese and Abbey reportedly got into an argument with 'Alley Boy' Persico and [redacted] took the argument to the LCN Council and the council decided in favor of [Redacted]. Reportedly after council's decision Joe Yak, Sally Albanese and Abbey were all killed." (Abbatemarco and Yacovelli were both still alive.)

On August 17 FBI CI reported: "[CI] advised that [redacted] Abbey (LNU), who was recently killed with Sally Albanese over a dispute with the Persico's, reportedly killed Joe Jelly during the Profaci - Gallo Wars in the 1960s."

In June 1979 Abbatemarco was included in the FBI's list of 94 identified Colombo Family members. The report noted his crew affiliation was unknown.

It's not clear when, and under what circumstances, Abbatemarco resurfaced.

He appears to have returned to New York by 1980.

That June an informant reported: "Anthony Abbatemarco, aka 'Abbey', has been inactive lately, possibly because he is a hopeless alcoholic, frequently drinking two (2) quarts of Vodka a day along with a handful of Valium pills. Abbatemarco is surprisingly coherent at important meetings despite all that booze."

On October 6, 1980 included in DEA list of 86 identified Colombo Family members.

On October 17, 1980 included in the FBI's list of 90 identified Colombo Family members.

On November 23, 1983 Abbatemarco's former Associates Anthony and Vincent Regina were found shot to death inside a burning car in Coney Island.

It's believed that Vincent was marked for death after a 1981 meeting at his residence was raided, leading to Boss Carmine Persico's return to prison on a parole violation.

Anthony Regina was paroled from New York State Prison in 1983, having served nearly twenty years for his part in the Gallo war murder of Louis Mariani, and it's believed the contract against Vincent was held off until both brothers could be taken care of at the same time.

Abbatemarco is included in charts and membership lists from 1983, 1988 and 1993.

The 1983 chart lists him as a Family Captain residing in Jefferson Valley, New York.

He doesn't appear to be mentioned during Scarpa's second phase of cooperation in the 1980s - early 1990s.

He died July 17, 2005 and was buried in Staten Island's Cemetery of the Resurrection.
