Ralph LaPonzina (Colombo)

c. 1960
Ralph LaPonzina was a member of the Colombo Family active primarily in gambling and loansharking in Brooklyn.

By the 1960s he was living in South Florida, where he associated with members of the Detroit, Gambino and Lucchese Families.

Younger brothers Ernest aka Ernie Lap (1917-2004) and Anthony aka Tony Lap (1918-1976) were also made members, the latter holding the rank of Acting Captain for a time in the early 1970s.

Ralph's son Johnny LaPonzina was a professional golfer who later served as President of the South Florida PGA Section.

Born June 26, 1910 in Prospect Heights, Brooklyn to Alessandro (39y) and Vincenzo Ciccone (27y). Father from Messina, Sicily. Mother possibly from Sessa Aurunca comune of Caserta, Campania.

By June 1915 the family was residing at 6511 11th Ave in Brooklyn's Dyker Heights neighborhood. Father employed as presser.

The previous year a raid carried out on an apartment at the address had uncovered an LCN-affiliated counterfeiting operation. Apprehended were Carmelo Quartuccio (24y) and Salvatore Riggio (31y); Quartuccio was related to convicted counterfeiter Salvatore Romano, then serving a term at USP Atlanta.

By May 1925 the LaPonzinas had moved a couple of blocks over to 953 68th St.

That month father Alessandro filed Petition for Naturalization in US District Court Brooklyn. Witnesses were Carmelo Passaretti, of 12th Ave in Bensonhurst, and Frank Piccolo (46y) of Bergen St in the Crown Heights section. Naturalized that August. (Piccolo, a tailor, was from Mariglianella comune of Naples, Campania.)

First arrest of record came February 23, 1928 when picked up by NYPD's 30th Squad in Brooklyn for grand larceny (auto). Convicted on final charge petit larceny and given suspended sentence.

Around mid-1928 worked as conductor with the BMT Subway Lines. Decades later told FBI Agents: "[He] obtained this position using his brother [Peter]'s birth certificate because he was 18 years old and one of the job requirements was the applicant had to be 21 years old."

Around 1929-1930 employed as electric truck operator with International Tailoring Company.

By April 1930 worked as laundry route man with stepbrother Peter's Bay Ridge Laundry Company.

On May 31, 1933 arrested by NYPD 8th Squad Manhattan on assault and robbery charge.

On August 30, 1933 arrested by NYPD's 70th Pct Brooklyn on CPW (gun) charge. On November 24 discharged by 7th Court Judge Folwell.

On October 22, 1933 arrested by NYPD BOS Brooklyn on assault and robbery charge. On December 19 bail forfeited.

On February 18, 1934 arrested by NYPD 76th Squad Brooklyn on felonious assault (gun) charge. Later explained charge in FBI interview: "[While] playing cards, another man accused him of using marked cards and drew a gun on him. He attempted to take the gun away from this person and in the scuffle the other party was shot; but not seriously." On May 23, 1934 case dismissed by County Court Judge Martin.

On May 23, 1934 arrested by NYPD re May 18, 1933 robbery of restaurant carried out by LaPonzina and one John Castelli. Subsequently pleaded guilty to final charge robbery 3rd degree.

On June 22, 1934 sentenced by General Sessions Court Judge Bohan to seven-and-one-half to fifteen years NYS prison.

Following day received at Sing Sing Prison in Ossining, New York. Receiving Blotter noted: "While armed held up Restaurant - night - money...Criminal Acts Attributed To - Evil Associates." The document also noted that LaPonzina claimed ownership of the Bay Ridge Laundry during 1929 - 1933.

On June 4, 1935 transferred to Wallkill Prison.

Prison staff later advised FBI: "[LaPonzina] was classified as a very smart inmate but unreliable and one who needed constant supervision."

During his time at Wallkill involved in an altercation with another inmate during which both men were stabbed. LaPonzina was determined the aggressor and had ninety days added to his sentence.

On August 30, 1938 transferred to Attica State Prison.

Paroled December 22, 1941 after volunteering for armed service. Later told FBI: "He advised he was in jail 10 years before he finally volunteered to go in the armed service after Pearl Harbor...He said he was told by his parole officer to go home for the Christmas holiday and to come back to go in the service after the holiday. He said he came back and reported for induction but there was some publicity concerning young men being drafted for the war and fighting beside convicts and he was not taken into military service."

Around 1942 briefly worked at Fulton Fish Market in Lower Manhattan. Later stated during interview: "[After being refused entry into US Army] he went to work as a laborer evenings in the Fulton Fish Market and was working there a year when his parole officer told him he would have to get out of the [Market] because there was a lot of publicity about an individual named Lanza who was allegedly controlling a lot of the activities at the [Market]." (Joseph 'Socks' Lanza [1900-1968] was a Genovese Member.)

Subsequently obtained employment with Summit Hat Company located on West 34th St near 6th Ave in Manhattan's Garment District. Earned approximately $25 to $32 per week as a women's hat lacquerer.

Within a couple of years working for Bethlehem Steel Company in Brooklyn. Rose to labor boss and worked seven days a week.

On April 12, 1945 married Lucy DeStefano (24y) in Brooklyn.

By 1946 earned $100 per week as salesman with Bay Ridge Auto Sales. Wife worked as RN at Brooklyn Veterans Hospital. Property owned by LaPonzina Associates, a company headed by Ralph's parents. Later told Agents: "[By mid-1940s he] could see their work at Bethlehem Steel was going to finish and he asked his [Redacted] who was a discharged war veteran to apply for a used car license, and [Redacted] received this license, and he went in partnership in a used car lot which was located across the street from his family home."

Around 1949 became partners with Unsub in a Brooklyn car lot. Later stated in interview: "LaPonzina advised he and [Redacted] had leased the lot and the terms of lease gave them an option to buy the lot, business was good, and they purchased the lot in 1949 for $32,000, half of which was cash which he had borrowed from his father and his brother and he and his partner had come up with some of this money. LaPonzina advised that later an ice cream company by the name of Carvel offered to give him $500 a month free and clear for this location, they would pay off the mortgage on the property and pay the taxes. He then advised shortly thereafter he was forced to sell his property for $44,000."

By April 1950 Ralph, his wife and their two children resided at 901 73rd St in Dyker Heights.

By August 1951 the family moved 64-46 211th St in Bayside, Queens. Ralph listed employment as salesman and buyer for Bay Ridge Auto Sales located at their previous address on 73rd St. Earned additional salary as salesman with Wakefield Appliance Corporation and as manager and developer of land for LaPonzina Associates.

By the mid-1950s he and his brothers Anthony, Ernest, Fidele aka Freddie and Joseph were all involved in borough gambling operations.

On March 2, 1955 held as material witness in Brooklyn District Attorney's Office inquiry. Described by the DA's Racket Squads Chief as 'one of five brothers close to, if not the heads' of large-scale 'bookie syndicate'. Held on $5,000 bail. Brothers Anthony, Freddie and Joseph LaPonzina had been picked up the previous week.

On October 30, 1956 arrested by NYPD's Brooklyn DA Squad following indictment on sixteen counts bribery. Accused of multiple payoffs totaling $1,095 to NYPD Detective beginning in May 1955. Detective, who reported the first bribery attempt and was ordered by his superiors to pose as a corrupt officer and continue the scheme, gave information on investigations and pending raids. Staten Island Advance reported: "[LaPonzina] described as having 'a finger in whatever bookmaking and gambling operations are conducted in Kings County'...[Judge Leibowitz] asked LaPonzina what bail he could afford. The alleged bribery said he could pay something reasonable, like about $5,000. 'Can you afford $25,000?' Leibowitz asked. He said he couldn't. 'Good,' said the judge. 'Bail is set at $25,000'."

According to New York State Police intel, by 1957 Ralph owned 'over a dozen' luncheonettes in or around the Bay Ridge neighborhood of Brooklyn. NYSP claimed locations 'were all fronts for bookmaking operations'. (LaPonzina denied this in a later FBI interview.)

On November 14, 1957 convicted on bribery charges.

On January 1, 1958 given suspended sentence of five-to-ten years NYS prison by County Court Judge Sobel.

By this time Ralph and his brothers Anthony and Ernest had been formally inducted into the Colombo Family and are believed to already be reporting to Captain Nicolino 'Nick' Sorrentino. (It's not clear if Sorrentino was already a Captain.)

Born 1896 in Palermo, Nick Sorrentino headed a Brooklyn crew involved primarily in gambling and loansharking.

Made members of Sorrentino's crew included Frank 'Dickie' Fusco and the three LaPonzina brothers.

As of the late 1950s the Family Boss was Joseph Profaci, who succeeded Salvatore DiBella around 1931. Joseph Magliocco and Joseph 'Peppino' Buffa served as Underboss and Consigliere respectively.

By the summer of 1959 Ralph left New York for Florida.

Later stated in interview with Agents: "[He] came to Miami shortly after his bribery case had been disposed of. LaPonzina advised that he had been indicted on 14 counts of bribery with the District Attorney's Office for allegedly bribing an official of the [DA's Office] in connection with a crap game. LaPonzina advised the case was tried and the trial lasted five weeks and the jury was out five days before it was declared a hung jury. When the case was retried the trial lasted a day and a half and he was found guilty of one count and was given a suspended sentence and then he moved to Miami."

On August 28, 1959 registered with the Dade County Department of Public Safety re criminal record.

Then residing at 1026 NE 97th St in Miami Shores.

C. Lombardozzi (L) and J. Robilotto
In early November 1959 the New York State Police gave the Miami Police Department background on LaPonzina's activities in New York: "In the latter part of 1958, the territory held by Ben and James Macri, who were killed, was taken over by John Robilotto, Carmine Lombardozzi and Ralph LaPonzina. The trio controlled all the bookmaking business in all of Brooklyn. On 9/7/1958, John Robilotto was killed, Lombardozzi was in jail for contempt and LaPonzina took over as sole boss of Brooklyn bookmaking." (Aside from LaPonzina, all of those named were members of the Gambino Family. Brothers Benedicto 'Ben' and Vincent 'James' Macri, from Reggio Calabria, were both murdered on Gambino Boss Albert Anastasia's orders in 1954. John Robilotto, a Gambino Captain, was himself shot to death in 1958. By that time Carmine Lombardozzi [1913-1992] had risen to head one of the largest crews in that Family.)

By early 1962 the Florida press was describing Ralph's son as a 'golf prodigy'.

R. LaPonzina (L)
Miami News
On February 23 The Associated Press published an article on the son's junior golf career, describing Ralph as 'a real estate man, former Brooklyn caddy and pretty good weekend golfer'.

On September 18, 1962 CW and Genovese Member Joseph Valachi was shown various photographs and stated he did not recognize LaPonzina and had never heard of him by name.

On January 15, 1963 identified by FBI CI as Colombo Member. CI noted: "[LaPonzina's] in Florida now." (This source might have been Gambino Soldier Alfred 'Freddie the Sidge' Santantonio, murdered July 1963 after his informant status became known.)

On February 18, 1963 FBI CI and Colombo Soldier Gregory Scarpa reported: “[Scarpa] was exhibited photographs of the following persons and had the following comments to make concerning them: Ralph LaPonzina – Informant advised that LaPonzina is a good fellow in the Magliocco Family assigned to the regime of Nick Sorrentino.

Scarpa identified Sorrentino's regime as including made members Benedetto 'Benny' D'Alessandro, Frank Fusco, Anthony LaPonzina, Ernest LaPonzina and Ralph LaPonzina.

The same month Ralph was designated the subject of an FBI anti-racketeering investigation.

On March 6, 1963 CI Scarpa reported: "With respect to the LaPonzina brothers, Ralph, Ernie and Anthony, all three are 'good fellows' in the Magliocco Family and all three are assigned to the regime of Nick Sorrentino. Informant pointed out, however, that Ralph LaPonzina is currently in Florida and the last information Scarpa had concerning him was that he was running a hardware store in or near Tampa."

On April 26, 1963 FBI CI reported: "[CI] advised [Frank Fusco] is associated with Tony, Ernie and Ralph LaPonzina in a bookmaking operation for Nickoline Sorrentino. Informant stated that the three LaPonzinas are 'Buttons' in the Magliocco Family under Sorrentino. This operation is headquartered in the Idlehours Cafe at 115 57th Street, Brooklyn, and in the candy store at the corner of 66th Street and 11th Avenue, Brooklyn. [CI] advised [Frank Fusco] operates a bookmaking setup with [Redacted] and two unknown writers. He is in partnership with [Redacted] NYPD Number [redacted] and Joseph Gentile [and] the LaPonzina brothers. [Fusco's sons Anthony], Salvatore [and] Richard [have] been arrested for bookmaking." (Within a couple of years Frank Fusco succeeded Sorrentino as Captain. Joseph 'Joe Lane' Gentile, Richard 'Richie Nerves' Fusco and Salvatore 'Sally Buzzo' Fusco were all inducted into the Colombo Family during the 1970s and 1980s.

On August 5, 1963 Frank Fusco interviewed by FBI: "Fusco stated that he is acquainted with the LaPonzina brothers and knows Ralph LaPonzina quite well, having grown up with him. He stated he has heard rumor to the effect that Ralph LaPonzina is a 'button' but he has never received any direct indication from Ralph himself that he, Ralph, is a 'button'."

On August 15, 1963 CI Scarpa reported: “[Frank] Fusco continues to run his bookmaking action from the luncheonette at 66th Street and 11th Avenue, Brooklyn, although he may not actually take any action in the luncheonette, members of his group who do take the action congregate there. He stated that if anyone is looking for Fusco the luncheonette is the place where he can always be contacted. Informant stated that he still believed Nick Sorrentino is the captain of Fusco and that Fusco probably banks his action through the LaPonzina brothers in Brooklyn.

Two weeks interviewed by FBI Agents in Florida: "Mr. LaPonzina stated that he had no need for services of an attorney and he had nothing to hide or fear and would answer almost every question, except those that he felt he would not choose to answer. He categorically denied having any knowledge of, or being a member of, or having any affiliation with any criminal organization known as La Cosa Nostra or the 'Mafia'. He stated he did not know and never heard of Joseph Magliocco. However, he recognized the name of Joseph Profaci from past newspaper stories but never knew the man personally nor had any affiliation with him directly or indirectly. He also stated he has known Nickoline Sorrentino for many years and knows him to be a hard working, honest man of [illegible] apparent means. Mr. LaPonzina denied knowing Sorrentino as a 'Caporegima' and stated he did not know what was meant by the term."

Report on interview later stated: "During interview of LaPonzina, after denying any affiliation with La Cosa Nostra, he stated, 'If I was involved or knew anything; you and the other 5,000 with you couldn't take the scare out of my stomach. Right now my son is playing in the woods and I know he's safe. But the other way, I'd be scared. Very scared." The report added: "In view of possibly developing LaPonzina as a bonafide productive source, the above quote has not been included in details of instant report so as to not preclude the possibility of compromising LaPonzina in the future if he should be developed as an informant."

This interview, during which Ralph also gave a rundown of both his criminal and his employment history, was the first of what would be over a dozen he agreed to over the years.

LaPonzina refused to discuss the crimes of other people and provided no real information of substance on LCN itself, but he nonetheless spent a good deal of time talking with Agents about various aspects of his life; FBI summaries of these contacts often went on for paragraphs.

On October 10, 1963 FBI CI reported: "[Ralph] LaPonzina's brother, Fred LaPonzina, operates a television repair shop in the Morton Towers Apartments, Miami Beach, and has three repairmen working for him. He is limited in working capital and is required from time to time to borrow money from his friends. He learned Fred LaPonzina runs a small bookmaking operation and will act as a fence on old stolen radios, televisions and radio testing tube cases. He further stated it was his understanding that Ralph LaPonzina is not active in bookmaking in Miami but allegedly still maintains his connections in the Brooklyn area, and he derives income from a big bookmaking set-up in New York."

On October 31, 1963 FBI CI reported: "[He] believes he was told the truth that Ralph LaPonzina is not engaged in any illegal activities in the Miami area and is no longer connected with the rackets in the New York City area. In fact, he was told that Ralph offered his brother, Fred LaPonzina, $100 per week so long as he would 'quit fooling around'."

On November 19, 1963 NYC Department of Investigations advised FBI: "[Ralph] LaPonzina was the apparent leader of his brothers Anthony, Fred and [Redacted; Ernest?] also designated as known gamblers by the NYPD. [In mid-1950s] Fred LaPonzina ran a horseroom for Ralph and when Ralph learned the Kings County District Attorney was conducting an investigation into the LaPonzina bookmaking operation, he attempted to bribe [Det and] LaPonzina was arrested...[NYC DoI] said he believes that LaPonzina was also involved in shylocking and the operation of dice games. He said during the investigation in Brooklyn it was determined numerous calls from the LaPonzina phones were made to Havana and Florida."

On November 20, 1963 CI Scarpa reported: “In regard to Ralph LaPonzina, informant stated he presently lives in Florida, but informant is of the opinion that he still receives income from numbers operations in Brooklyn. Informant stated prior to the time LaPonzina moved to Florida, LaPonzina, Dick Fusco and Nickoline Sorrentino were all associated in a numbers operation. Scarpa stated this is the operation which is still operated by Fusco and Sorrentino, and he, therefore, feels LaPonzina probably receives some income from this operation."

On April 5, 1964 Joseph Colombo was elected new Boss of the Colombo Family. He appointed Salvatore 'Charlie Lemons' Mineo as his Underboss. Consigliere position initially vacant.

On May 20, 1964 brother Peter LaPonzina interviewed by FBI: "LaPonzina telephonically advised that he knew nothing about his brother, Ralph's, affairs in Miami, however, he stated Ralph had been instrumental in putting him in contact with insurance clients in New York. He further indicated if and when he wrote insurance on these individuals, recommended to him by Ralph, Ralph would receive part of his brother's commission as a finders fee. LaPonzina indicated he was an agent for the John Hancock Insurance Company, with offices at 885 Flatbush Avenue, Brooklyn. Peter LaPonzina further advised he has not seen Fred LaPonzina is 10 years, however, he heard he was in New York. He stated that he and Fred had a disagreement some time ago and he doubted Fred would try to contact him, but if he did, he would tell him the FBI wanted to talk to him. However, he further stated, if he did know of Fred's exact location that he would not tell the FBI."

On July 1, 1964 FBI CI reported: "[Ralph], Ernest and Anthony LaPonzina are all members of LCN and are now under the regime of Dick Fusco within the Joe Colombo Family." (Fusco was Nick Sorrentino's Acting Captain.)

In July - August 1964 visited New York. During trip became affiliated as salesman with Rocket Auto Wash Machinery Company car wash business.

On July 23, 1964 FBI MM reported: "[LaPonzina] was alleged to have been in a silent partnership with [Redacted] and [Redacted] and to have been connected with Ridgewood Auto Sales, 6802 Fort Hamilton Parkway, Brooklyn."

On September 1, 1964 Former FBI SA interviewed by FBI MM:
"
[Former SA] advised that Ralph LaPonzina had informed him that morning he had returned to his home in Miami Shores, Florida, the last week in [8/64], after a vacation of several weeks in the New York area.

[Former SA] stated that he can set your clock by LaPonzina's routine. He said on a daily basis LaPonzina goes to the Miami Shores Country Club Lounge about 10:30 AM. Here he watches television until such time as a sufficient number of club members interested in playing bridge or gin arrive. He stated with regularity, LaPonzina plays cards with various men of non-hoodlum background, such as lawyers, doctors, and businessmen. He said they play for money stakes, but no money is kept on the table, settlement taking place at the end of play.

[Former SA] said experienced card players who have played with LaPonzina describe him as a talented card player who, without cheating, is able to win consistently. He said it has been estimated by LaPonzina's card playing opponents that he wins a couple of hundred dollars each week playing cards.

[Former SA] stated several years ago, when Carmine Lombardozzi, a hoodlum from NYC, owned a house in Keystone Point, he had alleged Ralph LaPonzina, a member of the Miami Shores Country Club and resident of Miami Shores, was a good friend of his, and he intended to play the Miami Shores golf course. He said, despite this, he has never seen LaPonzina associating with any known hoodlums. He stated invariably LaPonzina spends the entire afternoon playing cards and goes home to dinner about 5:30 PM. [SA] stated a close friend of LaPonzina he has seen with him frequently is [Redacted] from the New York area.
"

On September 10, 1964 CI Scarpa reported: “[He] had heard Nick Sorrentino is in the process of migrating to Florida where he will locate in the same area as Ralph LaPonzina.

On September 25, 1964 interviewed for second time:
"
LaPonzina was reminded he did not have to speak to [SA] whereupon LaPonzina said he had nothing to hide and had come to regard [SA] as practically a friend of the family because of the pleasant and fair manner in which the FBI has been treating him. LaPonzina stated his vacation had not been all play, since he became affiliated as a salesman with the Rocket Auto Wash Machinery Company, a car wash machinery company. He stated he had conducted a survey in the New York area to determine locations suitable for the installation of car wash businesses. He said he had several customers lined up and stood to make a few thousand dollars in commission. LaPonzina stated he did not have much hope of selling the equipment in Miami, because the number of auto laundries in the area was adequate to handle the volume of available business. He pointed out Miami's lack of industrial soot and smoke did not require frequent automobile washing.

...LaPonzina added he did not care what people thought or said about him, because he knew what he was. LaPonzina said he was not acquainted with anyone named Joseph Colombo. He said he was sick and tired of being accused of being in the Mafia and wondered if the government's sources of information were as unreliable as the source of the info that he was in [LCN]. LaPonzina said it was true that he had been in gambling in the past, but it was all over with. He said he never controlled gambling in Brooklyn and never had even one luncheonette, much less a string of them, as fronts. He said he knew of Carmine Lombardozzi, but denied any affiliation with him. He said he never tried to get Carmine Lombardozzi accepted for membership in the Miami Shores County Club. LaPonzina stated he did not know Ben or James Macri, or John Robilotto and was never affiliated with them. He stated while it was true his father-in-law had been John DeStefano, he had not been from Brewster, New York, but had lived in the Bronx.

...LaPonzina said that he is careful to report all sources of income on his income tax returns and they were a true reflection of his sources of income. He said he has not shown insurance commissions lately because he has not earned any. He said he would report his income from the Rocket Auto Wash Machinery Company when and if it was earned. LaPonzina again stated his disdain for informants and called them rotten degenerates who will just as well furnish false information as true to earn their pieces of silver.
"

On October 7, 1964 Unsub (Rocket Auto Wash) interviewed by FBI: "[UM] stated he knew Ralph LaPonzina and he was not actually an employee of his. However, he stated he had offered LaPonzina a deal in that if LaPonzina would locate sites for car washes, he would be paid a 3 to 5 percent commission if the deals materialized. He stated he would offer anyone the same deal, if through their contacts, he was instrumental in establishing a car wash. [UM] further indicated that he last saw LaPonzina in [July]. He also advised he knew Ralph LaPonzina through his brother, Anthony LaPonzina. He stated he and Anthony LaPonzina were partners at one time in the T and T Car Wash, Inc., which was located directly across the street from his present location."

On October 8, 1964 FBI CI reported: "[Ralph] LaPonzina, who is a member of the Joe Colombo Family, is definitely a 'button guy'. However, informant advised all his activities are centered around the Florida area. Informant could not say for sure, but he believed that LaPonzina may have been transferred to another Family in view of [his] permanent residence in Miami. Informant advised that [redacted] the LaPonzina brothers in New York to their brother in Miami."

On November 17, 1964 interviewed for third time:
"
[He] is acquainted with Nickoline Serrentino [Sorrentino] and recalls him as a vendor of grape and Christmas trees in the Borough of Brooklyn. He stated he has never been too close to him because he found him to have a disagreeable personality. He described him as a miserable old man of little consequence, and ridiculed the suggestion this individual was an influential underworld figure. LaPonzina said he knew nothing of the Mafia or LCN, hence could not say if Serrentino was a member. LaPonzina stated he has no connection with the man and has not seen or heard from him in years. He stated he has not encountered him in the Florida area or heard anything indicating he was in Florida. LaPonzina said since Serrentino was a grape vendor he would assume he was more acquainted with California and consequently more likely to have relocated to California, if he has left the New York area. He said he could not imagine Serrentino is active in anything because of his advance years.

LaPonzina said during his recent trips to New York he did not visit Serrentino or contact him in any manner, because they do not have anything in common. LaPonzina stated he intended to be truthful on all things with the FBI, but wished it understood that he would not furnish any information he believed the FBI could in any way utilize to prosecute anyone. He said if a question was asked him which might lead to that end he would simply decline to answer it but would not deliberately deceive...He stated he has not seen or heard from [Genovese Soldier] George Smurra in some time, but their wives are close and continue to chat with one another on the telephone.

LaPonzina advised since his return from his vacation he has flown to New York on two occasions for business reasons. He said a chemist with whom he is acquainted had developed a new detergent and paint remover which he hoped to market. He said outside of this, he had been unemployed...LaPonzina said it would be incorrect to say that he made about $200 a week playing cards with the various members of the Miami Shores County club, but pointed out while he was a consistent winner, the winner was obliged to pay the bar tab for all the players...[He] stated he does very little socializing and no night clubbing at all. He stated [SA] knows full well his days are spent playing cards (bridge and gin rummy) at the Miami Shores Men's Lounge with his regular cronies, business men, and professional men of the Miami Shores area.
"

On November 30, 1964 FBI's Miami Field Office reported: "Ralph LaPonzina has not been detected consorting with known hoodlums in the Miami area. However, his ability to live a quiet, work-free life on an upper middle class scale suggests that LaPonzina has substantial sums invested or is involved in a lucrative illegal enterprise up north requiring no active participation and very little personal supervision. LaPonzina does not display an outward hostile attitude to [SA] and always cordially greets him, in no way indicating a sense of unease in his presence."

On December 15, 1964 FBI's New York Office reported: “[Redacted] and [Redacted] contacted by [SA] on December 8th and 10th respectively, advised they have not observed anyone answering Nick Sorrentino’s description in the Miami area. [SA] has contacted or observed Ralph LaPonzina on a bi-weekly basis at LaPonzina’s hangout, the Men’s lounge at the Miami Shores Country Club, Miami Shores during 11-12/64. Sorrentino was not observed in contact with LaPonzina.

On January 11, 1965 briefly interviewed by FBI: "...LaPonzina advised he had invited is friends, [Redacted], to his home for Christmas Day."

On February 12, 1965 brother Ernest LaPonzina listed in FBI report on prominent New York area shylocks. Entry noted: "[LaPonzina] and his brothers are actively engaged in shylocking and numbers in Brooklyn."

Three days later FBI Miami reported: "[SA] advised as a member of the Miami Shores Country Club, he has had numerous opportunities to observe [Ralph] LaPonzina's activity at the club and confirmed observations of [Redacted] that LaPonzina plays cards daily in the lounge with non-hoodlum acquaintances. LaPonzina was observed by [SA] on 12/15, 16 and 17, 1964, and 1/6, 10 and 11, 1965, playing cards in the lounge."

J. Colombo (2)
In mid-February 1965 Boss Joseph Colombo visited Florida where met with LaPonzina and Captain Nick Sorrentino.

On February 23, 1965 CI Scarpa reported: “[During] a conversation with Joseph Colombo on [2/22], Colombo mentioned that while in Florida during the past week he had talked to both Ernest [sic; Ralph] LaPonzina and Nick Sorrentino. Informant stated Colombo told him he had intended to ask both of these men for financial assistance for the Family but wound up offering them any assistance the Family could give them. Colombo indicated to informant that both were getting along well in Florida and also he would discuss the matter more thoroughly at a future date.

On March 17, 1965 vehicle registered to S & R Trucking Company observed parked at LaPonzina residence in in Miami Shores, Florida.

F. Fusco (1965)
By the following month Frank Fusco was appointed official Captain over the former Sorrentino crew.

Made members of Fusco's crew included FNU Colombo (1), FNU Colombo (2), Anthony LaPonzina, Ernest LaPonzina, Ralph LaPonzina and Frank 'Gandy' LoCicero.

Associates of interest included Fusco's sons Richard and Salvatore, Joseph Gentile and Albert 'Gooch' Mugnolo. (Mugnolo was on-record with one of the LaPonzina brothers.)

On May 21, 1965 FBI CI reported: "[He] heard [Redacted] had loaned Ralph LaPonzina's brother, Fred LaPonzina, $300 at shylock rates and LaPonzina had skipped without paying same."

On August 12, 1965 INS advised FBI NYO: “[INS] has obtained a warrant of arrest and an order to show cause to be issued to Nick Sorrentino regarding his failure to register as an alien in [1/65]. [INS)] stated his investigation in New York and contacts with [Redacted] Brooklyn, have failed to locate Sorrentino...It is noted [CI] previously stated he believed Sorrentino to be residing in same area as Ralph LaPonzina, who frequents the Miami Shores Country Club. LaPonzina and Sorrentino were closely associated when both resided in Brooklyn.

On August 31, 1965 FBI CI reported: "[The] only information he heard regarding Ralph LaPonzina is that he gambles at cards and is very devoted to [son] a very good youthful golfer. Informant further advised Ralph's brother, Fred, went back East. He said he understood there was a local warrant outstanding against Fred LaPonzina for bad checks."

On September 13, 1965 observed by FBI playing cards in Men's Lounge of Miami Shores Country Club: "While he continued to play his hand, LaPonzina advised [SA] he was not working."

On September 15, 1965 Unsub interviewed by FBI Miami: "[UM] advised he has never observed Ralph LaPonzina engaged in any illegal activity. He stated 'come rain or shine' Ralph LaPonzina can be found in the Men's Lounge of the Miami Shores Country Club playing bridge or gin. [UM] added they do not play for high stakes and pointed out it is restricted to the country club membership. He advised LaPonzina associates with reputable businessmen and does not go out on the town in the evening."

W. Tocco
FBN Mafia Book
On October 18, 1965 interviewed:
"
LaPonzina stated he was always happy to talk to [SA] and his life was a simple uneventful one. He stated he thanks the Lord he could sleep with an untroubled mind knowing he had nothing to fear from the law or anyone else because he is not doing anything wrong. He stated he did not care what anyone said about him, because he knew himself he was not doing anything wrong or hurting anybody. LaPonzina said he knows 'Black Bill Tocco' and his son 'Tony Tocco' and he met them at the Miami Shores Golf Course some years ago. He stated he had helped them with their golf and has no ties or other relationship with them. He pointed out they were seasonal residents in the Miami area. LaPonzina wanted to know why it was significant he knows the Toccos. He said he knows and talks to hundreds of people, none of whom have any questionable reputation. LaPonzina said he used to be concerned when he was asked if he was connected with this one and that one; he said he does not care anymore, because he knows he is not.

LaPonzina stated a lot is made of the fact he does not have a steady job. He stated he is thought of as wealthy and prefers it that way, because if people knew he was broke a lot of people would not bother to even say hello to him. He said you have a better chance of making money if people think you have money. He indicated he could lay his hands on several thousand dollars by contacting relatives and friends, but he would of course have to pay it back. LaPonzina stated he is acquainted with Joseph Rosato, President of the S & R Trucking Company, and believes he last saw him in the Spring of 1965, when Rosato visited his home. He described Rosato as a friend of the family.

...LaPonzina advised he averages about three trips a year to New York City and planned to take a trip soon in connection with an automobile laundry and land deal in Flatbush. LaPonzina stated he has not seen Nicholas Sorrentino in years and commented 'he must be so old, over 70, the FBI is practically looking for a dead man'. LaPonzina said he does not know if the man is alive or dead...LaPonzina stated the wise guys and hoods for his part could 'drop dead' and he wished to have nothing to do with them. LaPonzina repeated his unwillingness to furnish info to any law enforcement regarding other people but said he was willing to discuss his own affairs.
"

On November 24, 1965 a meeting between Boss Joseph Colombo and the Fusco crew held at Fusco's residence in Dyker Heights. Colombo accompanied to meeting by Underboss Salvatore Mineo, Consigliere Benedetto D'Alessandro, Captains Vincent Aloi and John Franzese as well as FBI CI Gregory Scarpa. Scarpa subsequently reported that the meeting was held for Colombo to extend holiday greetings to the crew and to hear any problems the members were having in the Family. Scarpa noted: "[Among] the members of the regime present were Anthony and Ralph [sic; Ernest?] LaPonzina, Frank LoCicero, and four old men unknown to informant who were in their late 60's or early 70's. Informant related that he believed two of them were named Colombo, but were not related to 'Boss' Joseph Colombo. Informant stated that these latter four men were previously unknown to him and that in his position at the meeting he could not make any inquiry concerning the identities of these individuals. Informant stated it was his understanding that these 7 individuals made up the regime of Dick Fusco." (It's possible that Ralph LaPonzina and the crew's former head Nick Sorrentino remained in Florida and that Scarpa confused Ernest for Ralph.)

On January 31, 1966, at 8:30 PM, observed by FBI parked outside Detroit Member William Tocco's Florida residence.

On March 14, 1966 CI Scarpa reported: “[Scarpa] was questioned concerning Nick Sorrentino and advised his whereabouts are still unknown, but he felt that he was probably in Florida and probably near Ralph LaPonzina or in close touch with him."

On June 13, 1966 interviewed: "[He] does not have any regular employment...He stated on occasions he travels by plane to the New York area for short visits to his immediate family. He stated while in the New York area he does not contact or associate with individuals having criminal backgrounds. He stated he wished to continue living the quiet peaceful life he has been enjoying the last ten years in the Miami Shores area...Ralph LaPonzina alleged he is not receiving any money from any illegal activities and stated at no time has he engaged in shylocking. He stated he does not make a practice of fraternizing with his old friend, George Smurra, but would not snub him if he were to come to the Miami Shores Country Club and play golf as he does on occasion. LaPonzina stated he does not wish to become involved in any way with the hoodlum element, and would, under no circumstances, furnish info to the FBI re individuals with whom he was acquainted in the past." (George 'Georgie Blair' Smurra [1910-1981] was a Genovese Soldier probably under Captain Ralph 'The Geep' Ferraro.)

On June 29, 1966 interviewed:
"
Ralph LaPonzina advised his wife had observed a strange man taking a picture of his residence [and] went out to inquire why he was doing so and he did not answer, riding off in an automobile driven by a second man...He stated this caused him some concern, but he did not think it was an FBI car because he realized [SA] knows he can obtain, directly from him, any info he desired. LaPonzina was advised the vehicle was not an FBI car and was told that while he had to a degree cooperated with the FBI he has not gone far enough so as to be of some assistance. He stated he could not go any further than he has. He stated the FBI was welcome to come into his home at any time of the day or night to see if he was doing anything wrong. LaPonzina stated his great desire in life was to see his son and daughter grow into decent, law-abiding citizens...LaPonzina asked 'Do you think I would be so foolish and thoughtless as to do anything now that would bring discredit to my son and endanger his career?' LaPonzina said he and his wife, Lucy, plan to drive to Dothan, Alabama, on 7/4/1966, [redacted].

He stated the FBI could rest assured that he is not engaging in any criminal activity, and is continually making a conscious effort to avoid association with the hoodlum element. He said if the FBI has any good 'stool pigeons' in the underworld they must have reported to the FBI that Ralph LaPonzina is not engaged in any criminal activity and is not frequenting the hoodlum hangouts. He said he continues the practice of retiring early. He said he restricts his going out to infrequent dinner dates with his wife and [redacted]. LaPonzina said he has not been employed and is subsisting on money he borrowed and got by mortgaging his property. He said he makes approximately two trips to New York a year to visit his relatives. He said while there, he does not associate with the hoodlum element and is anxious to return home to Miami Shores as soon as he arrives in the New York area.
"

On December 2, 1966 Ralph again interviewed: "[He] did not visit New York during [June], nor did he stay at the residence of his brother, Ernest LaPonzina. He stated he did not visit New York and see his brother, Ernest, until some unrecalled date in [August]."

On February 10, 1967 FBI CI reported: "Informant advised he understands Ralph LaPonzina, who has a son who is an exceptional golfer, frequents the Miami Shores Country Club where he gambles at cards and mingles freely with members of the club."

J. Indelicato (1960s)
On March 16, 1967 LaPonzina and Gambino Soldier Joseph 'Joe Scootch' Indelicato observed in discussion outside Indelicato's business on Biscayne Blvd in Miami. (Joseph Indelicato [1910-1988] was a member of Gambino Captain Joseph 'Joe Rivers' Silesi's Florida crew.)

One week later Ralph, his brother Ernest LaPonzina and Detroit Member William Tocco observed together.

On April 18, 1967 Ralph and Detroit Member William Tocco observed by FBI driving to Hollywood Club Shop on Federal Highway in Hollywood, Florida: "Ralph LaPonzina advised [SA] they were there for the purpose of having some golf clubs repaired."

On May 22, 1967 auto observed by FBI parked outside Tocco residence.

On June 12, 1967 wife interviewed by FBI MM: "[Wife] stated she continues to work as a nurse for the Mount Sinai Hospital, Miami Beach, Florida. She said her husband, Ralph, is unemployed and continues to frequent the Miami Shores Country Club...Mrs. LaPonzina said she has been giving shots to the wife of Nicholas Sorrentino but her husband does not accompany her to Sorrentino's house and has not seen him in a year."

On June 23, 1967 FBI Miami reported: "It is to be noted that Ralph LaPonzina, who has in the past been contacted for info regarding the whereabouts of Nicholas Sorrentino [had] falsely alleged that he had no knowledge of Sorrentino's whereabouts. Investigation revealed Sorrentino lives only twelve blocks from LaPonzina; and LaPonzina's wife, Lucy LaPonzina, a nurse, regularly gives Mrs. Sorrentino hypodermic injections for her health. On [6/13], LaPonzina was made aware by [SA] that the FBI knew he had lied regarding Sorrentino and that it could only serve to cast doubt over anything he may have said in the past or may say in the future."

On September 6, 1967 interviewed: "[He] said now that his children are grown, he planned to sell his home in Miami Shores and move to the New York area...LaPonzina stated one of the reasons he planned to go to New York was to participate in the operation of the Rocket Car Washing Machinery Equipment Company because they have increased their interest in the company."

On October 11, 1967 interviewed: "[He] no longer is thinking of moving to New York...He said the real estate agents haggling over $300 additional commission irritated him so much he changed his mind about selling...LaPonzina who was observed chatting with [Redacted], fledgling heavyweight managed and trained by a trio consisting of Joseph Indelicato, Ralph Sorrentino and Ettore Coco, stated he met [Redacted] at the Miami Shores Country Club. He stated [Redacted] played golf with him and gave him some golf instructions. In return, [Redacted] to the Fifth Street Gym to work out. LaPonzina alleged he did not know Ettore Coco or Ralph Sorrentino. LaPonzina excused himself advising [SA] he had to rejoin his gin rummy game." (Ettore 'Eddie' Coco [1908-1991] was a Florida-based Lucchese Member and Possible Captain.)

On November 15, 1967 interviewed: "Ralph LaPonzina upon contact advised he had been in the New York area earlier [same month]. He stated he went to New York with his wife [so she] could attend the anniversary celebration of Saint Vincent's Hospital in New York City. LaPonzina stated he is not employed and has put aside thoughts of returning to the New York area. He stated he continues to lead a quiet uneventful life and avoids contact with members of the criminal element."

On December 9, 1967 Boss Joseph Colombo's son Anthony married, with the reception held at Queens Terrace Caterers in Woodside, Queens. Attendees included Joseph Colombo, DeCav Boss Simone 'Sam' DeCavalcante, Gambino Boss Carlo Gambino, at least six Colombo Family Captains including LaPonzina's crew leader Frank Fusco as well as at least twenty-four additional LCN members possibly including Ralph LaPonzina. (The informant[s] who provided a list of those present may have mistaken another LaPonzina brother, possibly Ernest, for Ralph. Anthony Colombo was inducted into the Family after the books opened in the late 1970s.)

Two days later FBI CI gave Agents a rundown on the event: "[There] were very few on the Colombo side of the family and friends who actually attended the wedding itself. He stated that the only two he recognized at the wedding were Salvatore Musacchio and Rocco Miraglia. Informant stated he attended the reception which was held that evening [and] advised there were approximately 700 to 800 people in attendance and a great many of Joe’s Family in LCN and the Families of others, particularly the Gambinos, were in attendance. He stated the reception began at 7:00 PM and he left at 3:30 the following morning and heard later the reception broke up around 5:00 AM. He stated there was a check-off system at the door and it would be almost impossible to crash the affair because a strict attendance was taken of all those entering. Informant stated the reception was a very lavish affair with no strings attached and if Joe had to pay for this affair, it was a very expensive one. He stated on a whole he would describe the reception as a very quiet, orderly affair and he stated that all of those in attendance were under strict orders from Joseph Colombo himself that it was to be a dignified affair with no drunks or disorderly affairs. He himself did not notice one person drunk the whole night.

On September 12, 1968 interviewed and stated in poor health.

Same month included in the FBI's list of 83 identified Colombo Family members. Report noted LaPonzina resident of South Florida.

On October 10, 1968 FBI CI identified photo of LaPonzina as a Colombo Soldier (formerly) under Nick Sorrentino.

On December 16, 1968 FBI CI reported: "[He] identified photos of Ernie and Tony [LaPonzina] stating that Ralph was in Florida but comes up to New York about once a month. Ernie and Tony have the Rocket Car Wash on 19th Street and 7th Avenue, Brooklyn, where they conduct shylocking and gambling. They charge two points or whatever the traffic will bear up to five points. Informant noted numerous persons indebted to them pay them off in checks either their pay checks or checks made out to cash. These checks are then deposited or cashed by Ernie and Tony through the Rocket Car Wash Bank Account. Informant believes if bank account is located, many of the checks cleared through that account would show names of victims of the brothers. Ernie also operates card games on weekend nights at the Falcon Social Club on Fort Hamilton Avenue between 68th and 69th Streets. There are two tables in rear where blackjack and ziganetta are played. Informant noted one victim of the LaPonzinas was a W/M about 30 years of age who, about one year ago owned a Starter and Generator Shop on Coney Island Avenue about three or four stores before from the corner of Cortelyou Road in the right side of Coney Island Avenue headed toward Coney Island. This individual was so far in debt he was forced to go out of business to settle his account. The store is no longer open."

On May 20, 1969 interviewed and gave Agents background on his worsening health: "...He said he was proud of his son and daughter because they were always well behaved and had completed their schooling successfully. He advised he has not varied his routine one iota since he returned from the hospital. He said any day of the week until 5:00 PM he can be contacted in the men's lounge of the [Country Club]. After 5:00 PM, he can be reached at home...LaPonzina said his only contacts with the past are with his family. He stated his brother Ernest LaPonzina had been in Miami for a short vacation early [same month]."

On July 30, 1969 FBI CI reported: "[CI] advised [redacted] Ernest LaPonzina either at Cantalupo Realty or Caplan Buick where he occasionally hangs around. Informant said that as far as he knows LaPonzina has not moved to Miami but continues to interest himself in gambling activities in the Brooklyn area. Informant did state further that Ralph LaPonzina continues to reside in Miami and is rarely seen in Brooklyn."

On November 17, 1969 Unspecified Male advised FBI: "[UM], friend of LaPonzina, advised Ralph LaPonzina had gone up to New York for a check up."

On November 23, 1969 auto observed by FBI parked outside Detroit Member William Tocco's residence.

Same month included in the FBI's list of 79 identified Colombo Family members.

In December 1969 purchased residence on SW 99th Street in Dade County.

On January 30, 1970 FBI Miami reported: "Joseph Rosato, who also frequents the Miami Shores men's lounge at the Country Club when in town, periodically has coffee or lunch with Ralph LaPonzina and other club members."

On February 3, 1970 Lucchese Captain Joseph Rosato interviewed: "[He] said he limits his associations while in Florida and has nothing to do with anyone socially other than William Tocco, Ralph LaPonzina and the [Redacted] family...Rosato said he will miss Ralph LaPonzina now that he is moving from Miami Shores...Rosato, who was contacted at his residence [in] Miami Shores, was later encountered at the men's lounge of [Country Club] where he joined [SA] and Ralph LaPonzina then engaged in conversation."

On February 25, 1970 interviewed:
"
Ralph LaPonzina, when encountered in the Men's Lounge of the Miami Shores Country Club advised he has purchased a home in the Kendall area of Dade County...LaPonzina stated he has recently developed a betting system to use on the horse races which he feels is sure to insure him additional income. LaPonzina stated he was not prepare to reveal his system but [SA] could rest assured that he is not engaged in bookmaking or anything unlawful.

...LaPonzina said that he has discovered a card room in the vicinity of his new home where he will be able to win more consistently at bridge and gin rummy because the players are not as good as the men he is accustomed to play with at [MSCC]. LaPonzina said he planned to keep the location of the card club a secret as long as possible because he did not want the Miami Shores card room sharks going there...At the time of the foregoing contact Joseph Rosato was seated at the table with Ralph LaPonzina and eventually had lunch with him.
"

Separate report provided alternate version of interview: "...LaPonzina said he continues in his retired status and supplements his income by betting on horses using a betting system devised by him. LaPonzina said he bets at various tracks, either in person or through a friend or a brother in New York. He declined to elaborate on his betting system other than to comment that he makes only show bets, which are not available through bookmakers but only at the pari-mutual windows of the track. He said the tracks consistently lose money through show bets. LaPonzina stated he disagreed with proponents of the theory bookmaking is not gambling, that the bookmaker can balance his book and laying off can insure a consistent profit. He stated balancing the book is easy in the classroom but in real life the horse and sports bookmaker can encounter many unforeseen problems. He said the numbers operator was not in any better position. He stated the numbers writers in the New York area traditionally received 50% of what they wrote. LaPonzina said he did not know anything about such operations in Florida."

On August 26-27, 1970 FBI CI reported: "[CI] furnished the following additional information concerning the above, in that Joe Lane is extremely tight with Ernie and Ralph LaPonzina, as well as with Dick Fusco. Informant noted that Joe Lane is not a 'made guy' but has the status of a 'made guy', which he has derived from his friendship with Johnny Dio. Informant advised Tony LaPonzina is not part of the above crew although he is related to Ernie and Ralph but is somewhere away from the operation of shylocking, numbers and bookmaking run by these individuals. Informant recently learned in addition to using the Rocket Industries as a depository for shylocking and gambling debts, Lane and the LaPonzinas have a corporation which informant believes is non-existent, called Lane's House of Flowers...Concerning the gambling operation out of the luncheonette on 13th Avenue, informant noted that [redacted]. Informant stated the depository of the Rocket Industries checks in the First National City Bank at 11th Avenue and 55th Street in Brooklyn. Concerning [redacted] for shylocking and gambling for the LaPonzinas and [Redacted]. Informant stated [Redacted] hangs out at a candy store on Kingsland Avenue and Driggs Avenue in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. This candy store is another center for gambling, shylocking and also a place where a lot of the swag is disposed of by [Redacted]." (John 'Johnny Dio' DioGuardi [1914-1979] was a Lucchese Member.)

J. Gentile
On September 23, 1970 FBI CI reported: "[As] of 9/23/70, he has heard that Joe Lane [Gentile] has split up with the LaPonzinas and is now tied up very closely with Dick Fusco. Informant noted that Joe Lane has for many years been jumping from one partner to another. Informant stated at one time Lane was very well connected with Jimmy Plumeri, thereafter involved himself with the LaPonzinas, which he has previously reported and now is allied with Dick Fusco. Word on the street is that Lane is going to get himself in trouble for switching from one wise guy to another. Informant stated the activities he has previously reported on that were Joe Lane's and the LaPonzinas are now Joe Lane's and Dick Fusco." (James 'Jimmy Doyle' Plumeri [1903-1971], a Former Lucchese Captain, was murdered the following year. In September 1983 sixty-nine-year-old Gentile was inducted into the Colombo Family.)

On September 23, 1970 auto observed by FBI parked outside Detroit Member William Tocco's residence.

Following day interviewed: "[He is] going up to New York to visit his brother Anthony LaPonzina, who recently suffered a heart attack. He indicated he would be in New York City briefly."

On October 30, 1970 FBI CI reported: "[Joe] Gentile, aka Joe Lane is in addition to being a very large bookmaker in Brooklyn, a very extensive gambler himself. He stated Lane, who operates with the LaPonzinas out of Rocket Industries on 7th Avenue in Brooklyn, recently lost a large sum of money, approximately $20,000, as a result of his own personal gambling and as a result of his numbers operation being hit very heavily. Informant stated Dick Fusco, who is Captain under Joseph Colombo, oversees Lane's operation and when Lane is short of money as in the above instance, Fusco will lend him whatever he needs at one point a week...Informant further advised Ralph LaPonzina, who resides in Florida, comes up to New York approximately once a month and meets with Joe Lane and Ernest LaPonzina."

On December 2, 1970 FBI CI reported: "[Ralph] LaPonzina does not frequent hoodlum haunts or associate with the Miami criminal element. He is not known to be actively engaged in criminal activity."

S. Celambrino
On December 4, 1970 FBI CI reported: "[Sal] Celambrino has a piece of the [Illegible] Hotel located at Collins Avenue and 72nd Street in Miami. Informant said Celambrino and Ralph LaPonzina as well as many other wise guys stay at this hotel when in Florida and frequent the Rainbow Grill located in the hotel. Informant stated that all the employees at the hotel are relatives of wise guys and if any inquiry is made at the hotel, it is immediately given to the wise guys." (Salvatore 'Skinny Sal / Little Sally' Celambrino [1903-1971] was a Genovese Captain. He died the following April.)

On December 23, 1970 FBI CI reported: "[Ralph and Ernest LaPonzina] frequent the Belvedeere Social Club, 985 63rd Street, Brooklyn, and play cards there." (The Belvedeere was operated by Colombo Soldier Rosario 'Black Sam' Nastasa [1912-1991]. During the early 1990s Colombo War Nastasa was shot to death inside the club by Orena loyalists.)

On January 12, 1971 FBI CI reported: "[To] the best of his knowledge, Ernie LaPonzina is still in town. He stated that LaPonzina, to his knowledge, does not make frequent trips to Florida, but is contacted by his brother, Ralph, who as in the past, makes a trip to New York approximately every month or so."

On February 10, 1971 FBI CI reported: "[The] only LaPonzinas that are members of La Cosa Nostra are Ernie, Anthony, and Ralph, who resides in Florida."

On March 15, 1971 interviewed and gave extensive information on his criminal and employment history:
"
Ralph LaPonzina approached [SA] and stated 'You people have me as a member of La Cosa Nostra. Would you mind telling me when I was made a member of this organization'. [SA] replied that he personally had no knowledge of LaPonzina's membership in LCN. LaPonzina then stated he is not a member of LCN but he does not want to get that straightened out because he always wanted to be somebody and at least this way every now and then The Miami Herald will indicate that he is a member of the LCN.

LaPonzina advised when he was 19 years of age he shot a fellow in a poker game back in New York and he was told by his attorney if he pleaded guilty to another charge he would get at the most a year or two in jail and would not get buried for the 30 or 40 years for shooting this guy in the card game. LaPonzina said he agreed and pleaded guilty to a crime he did not commit and instead of getting a year or two he got 7 1/2 to 15 years. While he was in jail he and another inmate got in a fight and he was stabbed and he stabbed the other inmate. [Re parole and subsequent employment history covered above].

...LaPonzina was asked how he thought his name got mentioned as a member of LCN and he stated probably that he associated with and came in contact with people that evidently were members. He advised his father used to make wine from grapes he purchased in the yard operated by Joseph Profaci and he himself was invited to a wedding through his father that was given by Profaci. LaPonzina advised at this wedding he met Bill Tocco from Detroit who is related to the Profacis and when he came to Miami Shores he again met Tocco and renewed his friendship. LaPonzina stated if some stool pigeon got $100 for naming him as an LCN member he wishes him 'All the luck in the world because as he said he always wanted to be somebody and at least this way according to The Miami Herald I'm a member of the LCN'.
"

On March 21, 1971 Italian-American Civil Rights League banquet held to honor Boss Joseph Colombo as 'Man of the Year'. Event held at Huntington Town House in Long Island. Attendees included Colombo Consigliere Joseph 'Joe Yak' Yacovelli, at least five Colombo Captains, Gambino Member Vincent 'Jimmy the Blond' Corrao as well as at least twelve Colombo members including all three LaPonzina brothers.

Five days later Agents in Miami photographed Ralph LaPonzina and Associates Richard Fusco, Salvatore Fusco, Dominick 'Donnie Shacks' Montemarano and an Unsub at the local country club. (The Unsub was possibly Vincent Costanza [1921-2010] who married the Fuscos' older sister. Like the Fusco brothers, Dominick Montemarano was inducted into the Colombo Family after the books opened in 1976.)

On April 16, 1971 auto observed parked outside Detroit Member William Tocco's residence.

On April 22, 1971 interviewed: "[He] acknowledged knowing Dick Fusco, but said he has not seen him in two years. He said that Fusco had been ill. LaPonzina stated he is not employed and remains in a retired status. He pointed out that he spends his time playing cards at the Miami Shores Country Club. He said the Hollybrook course still does not have a clubhouse, and one will not be built until Hazel Park has a good season. LaPonzina said they are trying to make up for this lack by giving good service...LaPonzina says his health has [improved]."

On May 14, 1971 interviewed: "[He] returned the evening [5/13] from New York. He said he spent approximately two weeks in Columbus Hospital...He said now that he once again has a home in Miami Shores he will continue his almost daily habit of playing cards in the Men's Lounge of the Miami Shores Country Club."

By June 1971 moved to new residence at 785 NE 96th St in Miami Shores.

Agents visited the home on June 2: "...The door to his new residence was opened by [Lucchese Captain] Joseph Rosato...LaPonzina stated Joe Rosato and his wife had been kind enough to come over to help them get squared away. [Their wives] were observed unpacking dishes and storing them in the closet. Also present at the LaPonzina was a man named Ralph (LNU) whom he identified as a brother-in-law. This man was dressed in blue work clothes. LaPonzina volunteered the information his brother-in-law had recently moved to Florida from New York. He said he worked for the Amber Fuel Company and he is a skilled oil burner mechanic...LaPonzina advised he continues playing cards at the Miami Shores Country Club with his old friends, on an almost daily basis."

On June 28, 1971 Boss Joseph Colombo was shot and seriously wounded during the Italian-American Civil Rights League (IACRL)'s Unity Day Rally in Manhattan. (He remained disabled until his death in 1978.)

On July 23, 1971 interviewed: "Ralph LaPonzina was observed playing cards at the Miami Shores Golf & Country Club. He stated that he has attended the last two meetings of the [IACRL] of which he is a member in the Miami area. He said he has found some of the speakers unimpressive. LaPonzina said he was fully in accord with the aims of the [IACRL]. He said he believed the aim of the organization was to counteract discrimination against Americans of Italian birth and origin and to gain greater political power and recognition for them. LaPonzina said he was of course aware of the attack on Joseph Colombo at the Italian Unity Day celebration in New York and expressed the hope he will recover from his serious wounds. Asked if he knew if Dick Fusco had returned to the New York area, LaPonzina said, 'Like I told you before, I know who he is, but, I don't believe I've seen him more than twice in my life. I don't know if he is here or has returned to New York'. LaPonzina said he continued to be retired."

On November 15, 1971 interviewed: "Ralph LaPonzina advised he returned to Miami Shores from New York approximately a week before [for health care]...While [SA] was at LaPonzina's residence, Joseph Rosato arrived to make a social call on LaPonzina. On February 8, 1972 interviewed: "Ralph LaPonzina stated he and his wife had gone on a cruise to Nassau in the company of Rose and Joseph Rosato. LaPonzina stated Joseph Indelicato, who is his 'compare', was grieving over the loss of his wife. He stated [Redacted] who recalled Mr. Indelicato had taken him to the circus as a child, decided to pick up his spirits by inviting him to the Ringling Brothers Circus. He said Indelicato accepted the invitation...He said he remains in a retired status and does little other than play cards."

However, LaPonzina's ability to live in the upper middle class style without any employment or known legal investments is to [SA] good reason to suspect that he is deriving income from his brothers' activities."

On July 26, 1972 FBI NYO reported: "It is estimated by [SA] that this gambling operation is one of the largest in New York with a daily handle of between $25,000 and $40,000, and has been operating under the aegis of the Colombo Family for several years."
