Newark Surveillance Photos (1970s)

FBI surveillance photographs believed taken in Newark during the 1960s - 1970s:

1970s
Pasquale 'Patty Specs' Martirano (1929-1990), born to parents from Vibo Valentia in Calabria, was a made member of the Philadelphia Family by that time.

In November 1984 he replaced Ralph 'Blackie' Napoli as the Family's Captain in Newark.

According to former member George Fresolone's Blood Oath published in 1994, Martirano served as the Family's Acting Underboss in the time leading up to his death in August 1990.

F. Martucci (1970s)
Frank 'Reets' Martucci Jr. (1925-1989) was a Philadelphia Associate (Member?) with the Napoli - Martirano crew.

In February 1983 identified as an Associate during US Senate Hearings on Organized Crime in America. Entry stated: "Frank Martucci is a significant criminal associate of the 'Bruno Crime Family'. He was a major operative in the late Antonio Caponigro's gambling network in the 'Down Neck' section of Newark, New Jersey. He was also involved in 'loan-sharking'. Martucci's criminal record includes arrests for gambling. In 1971, he was sentenced to a state prison for gambling."

An FBI chart of the Philadelphia Family compiled in February 1987 listed Martucci among the 75 identified made members. The chart noted Martucci was inactive and reported to Pasquale Martirano. (The list is mostly accurate. One possible error is the inclusion of Frank 'Blinky' Palermo as a member; handwritten in the margin next to his name is what looks like 'poss. honorary'. Palermo is also named in 1985.)

Martucci died October 25, 1989 in Elizabeth, NJ.

C. Battaglia (1) and Unsub (2)
Carmen 'Little C.' Battaglia (1896-1983), born in Gagliano Castelferrato comune of Enna, Sicily, likely started out with the Newark Family.

In the 1960s he was included in both Philadelphia and Genovese lists with most sources pointing toward membership with the latter.

Named as a Newark-based Genovese Captain in a couple of reports from the mid-to-late 1970s, he died February 1983 in East Orange, NJ. (Worth noting that a DeCavalcante Family induction list seized in February 1997 included in its deceased column one 'Carmen LNU' with a death date of 1983. CW Anthony Rotondo, a former DeCav Captain, later testified that this individual was an unknown 'old timer'. At least one other Genovese member with Jersey ties, Damiano 'Danny' Noto [1914-2000], transferred between the Genovese - DeCavs for a time in the 1960s.)

Edit: Fixed details on the Battaglia photo. It was originally mislabeled as depicting Battaglia with Martirano in the 1970s rather than an Unsub in 1962.
